New NHS Guidance

I could have sworn I've seen a thread on this already but maybe I'm imagining it. I cab't find it. Anyway, Times article on the new NHS guidance here:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/c15dc8da-53d2-11ed-b965-3a5f647316f8?shareToken=57eee51ad8af793eb5b8e6ef6c2151c0

Most children identifying as transgender are simply going through a “transient phase”, new NHS guidance states.

The pendulum has swung, finally, thanks to all the women and men who fought so hard to be heard.

Now the scale of damage will become heartbreakingly clearer.

(OP, I think there is another thread on this. Someone else may link it.)

MrsJamin · 25/10/2022 08:16

I haven't seen a thread. This is really important stuff. Surely schools and social workers will have to follow NHS guidance too, not to encourage social transitioning?

FlibbertyGiblets · 25/10/2022 08:30

Thank you for the link. I agree, it makes very clear that 'social transitioning' should be a very last resort as it is not a neutral act. IDK why schools, SW etc have not reversed at speed on this.

Cooroo · 25/10/2022 08:30

It's fantastic but it's still just a draft. Open for public consultation till December. I haven't managed to find a link for the consultation- if anyone does please post it!

Cooroo · 25/10/2022 08:37

This is what I found. I removed a rogue space but it still doesn't work.
www.engage.england.nhs.uk/specialised-commissioning/specialist-gender-interim-specification

However the draft guidelines are at:

www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/B1937-ii-Interim-service-specification-for-specialist-gender-dysphoria-services-for-children-and-young-people-.pdf

Which is where I got the dud link from!

sunflowersandtomatoes · 25/10/2022 08:39

Thanks so much for posting the link, OP. Look at this, from the new guidelines!

“A significant proportion of children and young people who are concerned about or distressed by issues of gender incongruence, experience co-existing mental health, neurodevelopmental and/or family or social complexities in their lives.”

What an amazing step forward.

Wow. This is an incredible “admission”. Is the NHS finally showing some level of critical, independent thought?

FrancescaContini · 25/10/2022 08:43

..although how they would explain “gender incongruence” 😶 is an issue in itself but yes, it’s definitely a step forward.

Sorry ig. Not doing a passive aggressive ‘dump’. I am providing context for the article and other threads. Particularly rogdmum’s. She always has a lot of information at hand.

Thanks for the share.

Floisme · 25/10/2022 08:51

Wow I'd completely missed this. It looks very promising but let's not jump the gun - it looks as if it's only at the consultation stage and I imagine our usual friends will be very busy right now organising their responses. Is their any guidance yet, e.g. from somewhere like Fair Play for Women for those of us who would like to respond in a positive way?

Floisme · 25/10/2022 08:51

Ah I see there's already a separate thread - thanks I'll look there!

AutumnCrow · 25/10/2022 08:55

Is the NHS guidance that's out for consusltation in step with the Cass review? It would make sense if the Cass review has informed it. Created it, even.

BadAmbassador · 25/10/2022 08:56

Wow thank goodness, what a relief!! Has this news hit twitter yet? 😂

TheKeatingFive · 25/10/2022 09:00

When's the full Cass report due btw?

Igneococcus · 25/10/2022 09:01

No worries @Helleofabore I thought I saw a thread about it but couldn't find it. I'd have put the link there otherwise.

This news has been out for a while. And Mermaids have finally issued a statement on it.

Helleofabore · 25/10/2022 09:03

The more discussion about it the better I would say!

This is huge news.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 25/10/2022 09:05

Amazing news. And yes, as pp said, hopefully this will filter into schools (although it will be hard work to get a lot of rainbow flag flying schools to change gear on this one).

As predicted Mermaids are not happy.

Strange though. That they tell us they are NOT medical experts, yet think that Dr Cass and NHS are working against children…

KittiesInsane · 25/10/2022 09:11

Bang on cue, yet another friend has proudly announced this weekend that their teenage neurodivergent daughter is now their son.

MrsJamin · 25/10/2022 12:04

Someone quoted this from the LGB Alliance vs Mermaids (re the LGBA charity status) saying that Mermaids "... don't give medical advice, we provide information about the NHS clinical pathway. If that changes we will change our advice."

  • Belinda Bell, Chair of Mermaids in court, Sept 13th 2022.

BOOM💥
