Sorry! There isn't a link that encapsulates the whole story. I've only been vaguely aware of this person/story and never quite sure what the motivation is. However it seems to have generated a lot of discussion around the various issues we discuss here is why is it not ok to culturally appropriate but it is ok to appropriate womanhood, and what makes you true trans - dedication to surgery? Time spent dressed as a woman? A name change?

I saw yesterday that he'd decided to detransition but only with regards to gender. He still seems to identify as Korean. Looking at his twitter he's not getting much engagement atm. Declared pronouns: HE/HIM KOR/EAN.

In years to come I can see mainstream society looking back with absolute incredulity at this period of human history. The counter arguments will like be "but what about x,y and z new things which are just as insane" and "to be fair, it was an all-time great period for performance art, a form of art which was taken to whole new dimensions, not simply whole new levels."

I wonder if the individuals will look back in incredulity at their own behaviour in the own lifetimes tbh.

Surely, for all of us, if we are lucky enough to reach an old age, there comes a point where extensive cosmetic surgery will be something that no longer has impact as intended etc.

I have been aware of Olli London for a little while and felt that he was very unwell and therefore vulnerable.

I think he looks better on this video than any other I've seen - as in more healthy -both mentally and physically. I hope he makes peace with who he is, all this swapping about must be exhausting.

And he's spot on with the message to slow down and not rush into things that are irreversible. I hope he's okay.

The lack of safeguarding is particularly dangerous to people with mental health issues (who are clearly not in the correct state of mind).

I saw an interview with him where the interviewer asked “why not just be yourself” (or words to that effect) and Oli openly said something like oh no, I hate being myself. It was an interesting glimpse into the appeal of identity politics - it’s so often about trying to escape the self and a sense of self-loathing, rather than being a “true self” despite all the “true self” rhetoric.

I thought it was unusually honest and self-aware of him to say that though.

However yes about the surgery. He doesn’t look remotely Korean. I’m not suggesting that if he did that would mean anything anyway, but I’m amazed that what he’s had done was meant to look Korean because it doesn’t.

The irony is if he was really that into being Korean, he could presumably go and live in Korea, learn the language and apply to become a citizen. It’s not about being Korean, but about changing the body as a response to unhappiness.

Yes, exactly. If "being Korean" meant living a life like Korean people do, he would move to South Korea, learn the language, get a job, take part in society as much as he could. But he doesn't want to "be Korean" he wants to look Korean. All he cares about is the image; the image is everything. It's just the same with transwomen - there's fuck all TW who are transitioning in middle age and taking on the role of looking after elderly parents, suddenly reducing their working hours to fit in school runs, doing all the mental load of the household. All their efforts in "being a woman" are centred around clothes, make-up, handbags, massive fake tits. Again, image is everything. It's such a stupendously superficial outlook. I look, therefore I am.

I don't think he is trolling, not with that level of plastic surgery. Although what on earth he is doing I have no idea. I suspect he's quite unwell.

He made excellent points in a very relaxed way that seemed very genuine about irreversibility. If he's clever it's all been a planned stunt to make a point.

He also talks about being himself when he's so clearly trying to be everyone else...! That's when I wonder if he's does it all deliberately!

He first came on my radar when he was doing the whole 'I'm Korean' thing. The 'Im a woman' passed me by. I have no idea what he did before all this stuff, but he's always struck me as mentally unwell (I mean - Korean? Really?).
