Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A small difference, but a difference

I signed up for some research recently and the pre-interview questionnaire asked my sex assigned at birth and gave the options of male, female, non-binary or other. I emailed the research lead and corrected the usual things about nonsense like this . She apologised and said she was embarrassed about the "oversight" and had the wording changed. Result!

In other news IW has blocked me on Twitter so I must be pouring sunlight on IW's nonsense too..

I'll never be up there with the feminist greats but I'm happy with my small deeds.

Good for you! Well done!

ImAvingOops · 13/10/2022 23:13

Well done.

Congratulations!

MishyJDI · 13/10/2022 23:35

Well glad that you have made a minority lives much sader. Congrats! I hope you can celebrate the victory and you enjoy it.

WallaceinAnderland · 13/10/2022 23:42

Is anyone ever assigned non binary at birth?

donquixotedelamancha · 13/10/2022 23:45

Well glad that you have made a minority lives much sader.

Let's ignore the fact that you constantly speak about trans people in such a patronising way- do you honestly imagine they are all 'much sadder' if we don't pretend non-binary' is a sex?

Genuine people with GD know what sex they are. Lying about whether sex exists doesn't help them.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 14/10/2022 00:51

So you expect the entire population to change to nonsense language in case a tiny minority get hurt feelings because it doesn't affirm their religious beliefs?

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2022 00:58

The 'tiny minority' of people who've had their 'sex assigned at birth' as 'non-binary' will be precisely zero.

ApocalipstickNow · 14/10/2022 07:12

But that zero percent are the most marginalised, Errol! That literally have no rights, what with not existing! Won’t someone think of the rights of imaginary people!

MagpiePi · 14/10/2022 09:41

Going back to the OP...
I always challenge being asked about gender, rather than going along with the view that it doesn't matter and why make a fuss.

I do think the tide is gradually turning ,and the widespread, mostly uninformed 'BeKind' opinions, and corporate rainbow-washing are disappearing.

You're so busy being outraged that you didn't even read the OP correctly. She said "assigned at birth". HOW on earth can a newborn be assigned non binary at birth? Honestly your mind is so open that your brain has fallen out. Try seeing past the red gender mist and engage with the real world, you just might see how idiotic some of the principles you are standing up for actually are.

hallouminatus · 14/10/2022 18:51

WallaceinAnderland · 13/10/2022 23:42

Is anyone ever assigned non binary at birth?

Yes: "theybies" en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theybie,
but obviously it's not their sex that's assigned.

mcduffy · 14/10/2022 19:21

Sader might catch on Grin

ApocalipstickNow · 14/10/2022 20:10

So if you’re assigned non-binary at birth do you have to come out as binary to great fanfare when you find you were actually misgendered?

pattihews · 14/10/2022 20:16

Well done. I wonder sometimes whether there aren't women like the one in charge of your survey who, under the cosh of genderist colleagues, feel they have to allow this nonsense to go out but hope that someone like you will complain and give them a reason to stop it.

God, I love that idea! I'm going to choose to believe that's the case from now on!

Gender isn't binary. Sex is. Non binary is a word that has only existed in a non chemistry context for the last few years. They remain free to not conform to stereotypes to their hearts content but labelling something non binary means there is a binary. It creates a second fucking binary and lumps everyone else in it.
Which makes me much sader. Congrats.

DdraigGoch · 14/10/2022 23:20

WallaceinAnderland · 13/10/2022 23:42

Is anyone ever assigned non binary at birth?

Apparently six US states allow you to put "X" on a birth certificate where the newborn's sex should be written.

You occasionally see stories in the papers along these lines: www.thestar.com/life/parent/2011/05/21/parents_keep_childs_gender_secret.html

Pudmyboy · 15/10/2022 00:54

Well done @CervixSampler ! 💐

CervixSampler · 15/10/2022 00:55

Non-binaryism just reinforces the binary from what I've seen in dd's school friendship group. They tend to have shorter hair (but not short) and favour a sort of emo back to the 90s checked shirts, black baggy jeans and docs look. Two are lesbians and one of those two has autism. I like their look but to me they are just renaming a fashion and attaching pronouns. I think it's very sad that high school is more homophobic than it was back in the 90s and they can't just be gay. Gender trends mean they are declaring themselves non-binary to escape the homophobia. Dd isn't really friends with one girl any more after refusing to agree that changing sex is possible. The other girl is fine with Dd believing that sex is immutable and they respect yet disagree with each other's beliefs. This lass and mine are both autistic. Dd is very back and white and she will speak her mind and openly disagree with any nonsense. It wouldn't occur to her to lie and she will say what she sees and knows to be true. She wouldn't be deliberately hurtful though. This gets her in trouble. What a world where honesty is punished by many in society.

MangyInseam · 15/10/2022 14:59

I haven't noticed where I am that gender stuff seems to mainly be a response to homophobia. Rather, it's cool both to be non-straight or non-"cis". Though the girls seem to start of claiming to be lesbians or pansexual at about 11, and many move on to being non-binary or transboys by about 14. "Gay" transboys are common. A lot of the do not seem to actually be trans or lesbian by the time they exit the teen years though, though the one who went with trans identities seem to have a harder time leaving them behind.

Quackmire · 15/10/2022 15:38

"Well glad that you have made a minority lives much sadder. Congrats! I hope you can celebrate the victory and you enjoy it"

Sadder?!
And why the fuck is OP responsible for making
anyone's (minority or not) life merrier?!
And simply by sending some research links, thus
expressing an opinion.
Jesus fucking Christ.
If anyone's dissenting or opposite views make
others' lives "sadder", then I suggest we're living
in some fucking dystopian kindergarten supervised
by self-centred morons.
You can't get much "sadder" than that.

Quite an achievement to fail at spelling, grammar, and logic in a single sentence.
