BiscuitLover3678 · 12/10/2022 09:46

amazing

DameHelena · 12/10/2022 09:47

Brava.

It is a luxury belief and perspectives like this make that abundantly clear.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 12/10/2022 09:47

Yep, women can't opt out of their sex based oppression.

LostMyUserName · 12/10/2022 09:53

Thanks for sharing this baduncle I’ve copied my favourite sentence from that piece in to my phone so I can read it over.

Her book is also brilliant and beautiful. I got it for DD for her bday and she loves it. www.waterstones.com/book/love-and-justice/laetitia-ky/9781648960529

She's amazing! Her work is both beautiful and disturbing and very political.

She’s an amazing artist and fights for women’s rights.

But the left is never going to give her a voice, lived experiences only count if they are from the right sort of minority (with the right opinions) or from men (especially the ones who say they are women).

You won’t see her featured in the guardian, but you’ll keep seeing the “stunning and brave” men who wear dresses and say things like “if there was a slight spike” (in women’s sexual attacks and rapes) from including these men in single sex spaces “it won’t matter” (paraphrasing), or from 50 year old men who like to play football with 20 year old girls and complain that people object and say things like they “want to leave a legacy of inclusion) - no picture was given of this balding old man, probably to help the gaslighting work better for those still asleep… etc etc

I used to be left, my heart still cries out from the betrayal. I’ll never forget.

FunnyTalks · 12/10/2022 12:55

Oh thanks I didn't know she had a book. I absolutely adore this woman's work and words. So fucking powerful. An incredible role model.

OldCrone · 12/10/2022 13:23

You won’t see her featured in the guardian

When I saw this thread I remembered this article in the Guardian earlier this year.

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2022/mar/31/some-people-are-freaked-out-how-laetitia-ky-tackles-abortion-sexism-and-race-with-her-extraordinary-hair

Surprisingly, it even touches on the gender issue.

But what really took Ky by surprise was how her work got caught up in the slipstream of a western discourse about gender identification. Her focus on the punishment of biological womanhood has attracted comments that she is excluding trans women from her feminism. Ky is upfront about how the context is unfamiliar to her. “I’m not gonna lie, I don’t fully understand it. But in Ivory Coast we have things like excision, we have things like breast flattening. So when I come out there trying to express all this and someone tells me sex doesn’t exist, only gender exists, I’m like: ‘What are you saying? Sorry, but no.’”

CristinaNov182 · 12/10/2022 13:45

Surprising indeed. It was probably allowed considering they had other 100 articles on the roll about other “women”, the truly “stunning and brave” women.

Jerabilis · 12/10/2022 15:14

Thank you for posting the link to her book @badbaduncle , my goddaughter is studying art at A level so I’ve bought her a copy!

ValancyRedfern · 12/10/2022 15:16

Laeticia Ky is wonderful. I highly recommend her book.

turbonerd · 12/10/2022 15:18

thanks for sharing

jeffgoldblum · 12/10/2022 15:41

I almost cried when I read that!
It's 1000 times the truth, said in a way I couldn't find the words for ! 👏

jeffgoldblum · 12/10/2022 15:44

It's why I find this movement so offensive, tell Afghan women and Iran women to transition from their sex based abuse! , they can't because it's a lie!

ItsStardustBackAgain · 12/10/2022 15:55

When you tell me that gender is something I chose
When you tell me that being a woman is something I can opt in or opt out of
You tell me that I oppressed myself
The harassment, the attacks, the lack of freedom, the insults…
An imagined thing that I chose

jeffgoldblum · 12/10/2022 15:57

@ItsStardustBackAgain , amazing!

The truth is even worse. In Iran they forcibly transition lesbians.

bellinisurge · 12/10/2022 16:05

She's such an intelligent and talented woman.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/10/2022 16:14

Very eloquent. What a strong woman she is!
