Trans guidance for schools - "that British fudge that so often works"

In The Times. Looks like a Cabinet split may open up. It's not clear where the extra space will come from for the gender neutral toilets. And it won't be statutory guidance either:

Ministers seek compromise on transgender advice for schools

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/006ef0b0-4818-11ed-8558-9a2089c4aed0?shareToken=6b7644896a593dcb3760a4516b1200ec

"A senior government source said: “This never used to be such a divisive issue: people just accepted trans people and got on with it. It only became an issue once the activists got involved and polarised people. We need to get back to that British fudge that so often works.” They added: “In schools we need to find a compromise that works for all pupils, whether that’s having gender-neutral toilets as well or something else.”"

Compromise? Hmmmm.

Does it mean women and girls are told budge over again, without any consultation?

mcduffy · 10/10/2022 05:58

And why do the "trans" kids get to change first? Budge up girls

ResisterRex · 10/10/2022 06:02

And why not provide another changing room? My guess is because there's no space.

But this mentions gender neutral toilets. Does that space come from disabled toilets?? 🧐

Oh great, another mess.

Has the hyperbole started from Labour and certain teaching union officials yet? Some of them are proper full on Astrology Popular Front.

And Truss knew this is the sort of shit that chief astrologer Mordaunt would stir. God knows she has seen Mordaunt in action over the years. Absolutely predictable that a Cabinet with Mordaunt in it would be messy on safeguarding. Unforgivable, given the Mermaids safeguarding disaster unfolding right in front of us right now.

WarriorN · 10/10/2022 06:23

It's the lgbtq fudge that caused all this in the first place Ffs.

WarriorN · 10/10/2022 06:25

I know some architects and they say unisex loos are a nightmare to plan for as they take up so much space.

So existing schools will struggle.

I saw in a high school near me the disabled loo had become the inclusive loo for everyone.

AutumnCrow · 10/10/2022 06:29

Maybe Headteachers could give up their toilets instead of pupils with disabilities having to, in selfless acts of gender woo.

EdgeOfACoin · 10/10/2022 06:33

Does this mean we need to write to politicians again?

WarriorN · 10/10/2022 06:37

Probably

AutumnCrow · 10/10/2022 07:12

Nadhim Zahawi is the chap in role as Minister for Equalities, is he not? I think the ‘women’ bit was subsumed.

KatMcBundleFace · 10/10/2022 07:35

Compromise..... thoughts?

Children can wear the uniform of either sex. My school has done this for a while anyway.
There should be unisex toilets, alongside single sex provision.
Children should change with their biological sex, but there could be provision for privacy within those spaces, for dysphoric children?
Sport should be by biological sex.

Children should be able to change name with parental permission. However pronouns should be per biological sex, unless they are under proper NHS medical supervision and all parties agree this is best for the child..... (not sure about this....)

I believe studies show social transition leds children to the medical pathways. These are adult decisions. The overwhelming majority of dysphoric children will grow out of it.

Children should be taught about ALL the protected characteristics and lessons on this should be drawn up by government.

No more lobby groups / resources in schools.

Children should be taught it is okay to be yourself, boys can be caring, girls can be brave. Gender is just stereotypes, which constantly change. They should be taught sex is binary and immutable and humans can't change sex, but they can express themselves in different ways.

Thoughts?

LizzieSiddal · 10/10/2022 07:45

The report does say they are speaking to Hilary Cass so all is not lost.

Live4weekend · 10/10/2022 07:49

My daughter does not feel comfortable using gender neutral toilets. She is 11, will start her periods in the next year or so. I think she has good reason to not want to use gender neutral.

Instead, I will probably need to have a conversation with her, and tell her she doesn't count. She's going to have to get used to it. As a female she has it worse than i did growing up.

FrancescaContini · 10/10/2022 07:52

Schools are already struggling to manage their budgets. Why should extra funds be allocated to pander to a self absorbed minority?

Whatever you think you are, whatever star sign, whether you prefer Diet Coke or Coke Zero, whatever your background, skin colour etc - just use the toilets for your biological sex. It’s really easy, FFS. Everyone else in the world does it.

This shouldn’t be taking up the headspace of any member of a school leadership team - they want to get on with providing good education for all and not wasting time discussing toilets.

rogdmum · 10/10/2022 08:05

Well. What a mess this is going to be. Once again the govt appears to be deciding safeguarding can just be swept away in favour of trying to find some sort of messy compromise that won’t solve any problems.

midgetastic · 10/10/2022 08:06

I suggest the same fudge as for sports

An open category and a womens category

Live4weekend · 10/10/2022 08:11

Maybe the government could put proper resources into mental health provision- to help these kids who have had to deal with a lot in their short lives.

This is a Trend. Break the cycle, help the kids, and support the incredibly small number who have genuine gender dysphoria. When you pander you create more of a mess which is exactly what has happened, and now we have a large number of men now invading our spaces.

Live4weekend · 10/10/2022 08:18

The government need to take responsibility for the activism that has happened over the last few years. Its all been on their watch.

They have been as captured by Stonewall as other institutions.

They have allowed the EA ro be abused and the have encouraged male bodied people into women's single sex spaces.

The government needs to sort it out- and their main priority should be woman and children who are most at risk.

rogdmum · 10/10/2022 08:20

My daughter’s former school installed gender neutral toilets alongside the single sex ones. Apparently the only pupils to use them were those who did so to make out. The school fretted about what went wrong and how could they fix it. 🙄

They're not suggesting a fudge on sports though, on that it seems sensibly clear.

Tbh this is all a lot better than where things got to under stonewall etc. Obviously there are practical considerations re loos - providing gender neutral alongside others costs to do properly but is better than what's happened in so many schools where they've just made them all (or the girls) mixed sex.

Wearing whichever uniform... good, gender critical people were in favour of allowing gender nonconforming kids not to be forced to dress according to stereotypes before trans issues ever hit schools. We were the ones pushing for allowing girls the choice of skirts or trousers etc... My criticism is that it shouldn't be couched in terms of 'trans kids' being allowed uniform choice. Just that any kid can choose what they prefer, not a big deal, it doesn't make you special, doesn't make you 'trans', 'clothes are clothes'.

KatMcBundleFace · 10/10/2022 08:27

Let clothes be clothes and toys be toys is such an important message

ResisterRex · 10/10/2022 08:30

SSUK are incensed. Can't say I disagree with them really:

It's fudge that got us into this mess in the first place. Clarity and common sense are what's needed to get us out of it.
