The first thread, towards the end of which there was a discussion about having a second thread but it wasn't added:

Mermaids being investigated by the charity commission

There's been a new development so maybe a second thread would be useful:

Lottery pauses trans charity cash during investigation

@hoodathunkitwas forever being labelled as an obsessive and by implication someone that sensible people needed to ignore. It always struck me as very unfair.

This thread now reads like one of Hood's. I also defended her on occasion.
She was so often disbelieved for the breadth of connections she dug up. It sounded paranoid.

This thread, if it weren't backed by receipts, would as well.

Madness. What times we live in.

Here's Darren Mew's YouTube channel - with one subscriber 😂 - started to listen but oh my days the boring queer narcissism 😖 - i had to give up because I actually need to stay awake this morning!

RedToothBrush · 10/10/2022 09:09

This morning the Times is reporting another charity promoted by Harry and Megan is under investigation after its leaders pocketed £2million in 5 years.

Now its clear this is part of a campaign against them but its also highlighting there is a major problem over celebrity endorsement of charities and there similar isn't enough due diligence / oversight going on from those who put their names to charities. H and M are far from alone in this problem but they are one of the most high profile celebrity endorsers. They have the means to be double checking the creditials and running of these charities.

It really isn't good enough.

oh and I noticed that charideee had Emma Watson as a speaker.... !

Some additions to the Nurtural thread:

"It was in 2016 that Mermaids began listing Helen Webberley on their 'resources for parents' webpage. Webberley went to the 2016 Mermaids 'residential'."

Graphic with mentions of GIDS vs GenderGP between 2017 and 2020, showing shifts:

Not sure how the account got the data for the graphic but you'd think they'd been a member of the forum (?)

This is what will damn them.

I assume data comes because someone archived the forum. The data tells us that Gender GP was discussed frequently, but not what was said. The safeguarding approach would have been to ban all mention of Gender GP once Webberley's travails started.

No mention in the Mail of our friend Darren, though they have enough for a clickbait, and text provided by RTB.

I wonder/hope they are holding out for a bigger more considered (and more damning) piece.

That's Mermaids who hadn't bothered to read the CASS review and who admit they aren't medical experts who got the Tavi to change its ethics on blockers through lobbying.

Again heads should roll on this, beyond Mermaids. Mermaids is the toxic link but it's also not been told to fuck off where appropriate because so many people got on the trendy bandwagon and bought into the fantasy.

This is why ideology has no place in medicine. Everywhere it appears you even up with harms done. No exceptions.

I clicked on one of the vids at random and heard a fair posh male voice saying "...we had a big protest with lesbians who believe that trans rights are encroaching on their own rights as feminists, which sticking my head on the line "it's not""

Not sure he's the sharpest tool, but he is a tool.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 10/10/2022 10:17

That is a very impressive map!

If you look at the KiwiFarms thread on Mermaids, they have been digging and there are a lot of other links to the Breslow node that could be included.
He has a brother in the faculty at Harvard Medical School who specialises in child transition. And his whole family seem dodgy and connected to a lot of different well-known companies.

(Actually I am going to constructively criticise the brilliant map in case its maker wanders through: I think unidirectional connections would make more sense. Reducing the number of lines on the map would make it clearer and it’s not obvious what the directional arrows are conveying.)

RedToothBrush · 10/10/2022 10:21

The problem with maps like that and saying stuff like well his brother did this, is its effectively like Keven Bacon's 7 degrees.

It doesn't necessarily mean anything.

You need to have a really strong connection which links causes AND people.

I fight that map counter productive unless it had more tangible points I'm afraid.

Otherwise you end up seeing things that don't exist.

ResisterRex · 10/10/2022 10:27

The map is under construction to be fair. It looks like you can add to it if you log in etc.

If we are putting our tin hats on, the DM published a rather extraordinary article a week or so ago. If they are correct, and I assume they would not have written it if they did not feel themselves to be on firm ground, child abuse and high level cover ups are still happening.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11270161/Investigator-exposed-Jimmy-Savile-working-child-sex-case-against-significant-person.html

There are lots of things I don't understand. Why, given the wealth Epstein accumulated, did so few names come out. Why did it take so long with Saville. (My dad, who was a senior Detective in the 70s clearly knew something, and certainly knew about the care homes scandal as his request to investigate abuse he discovered whilst looking at separate criminal activity was stopped at a political level.) How did "gender" spread so fast and why has it been so hard to speak out. Anything/everything about Rotherham. RTB and I clearly have different views on Meghan and Harry (we are grown ups, we can agree to differ) but there is something very odd about the US charity sector, Delaware registered corporations, some extra ordinary staff salaries etc as well as the whole PR/celebrity endorsement/awards industry. Underneath the surface of what we assume to be democracy there are a lot of levers of power, some seemingly malign, being pulled.

Mermaids are dead in the water. Many involved will have drunk the kool aid and not be aware to the extent they were being manipulated. They, and this may well include Susie Green, thought they were on the side of right and were blinded, or perhaps did not bother to look, at the darker undertones or the risks. They will be the ones hung out to dry. We need to look at how Mermaids achieved such prominence.

BewaretheIckabog · 10/10/2022 10:42

I notice on Mermaids web chat it says the service is 100% confidential. I thought one rule of safeguarding was you should never promise a child that.

I thought safeguarding meant you have to report a child in danger, someone who may be dangerous to themselves or others.

Also don’t MM have a duty to report all these suicidal children where there is a risk of immediate harm. They must be on the phone to Social Services constantly.

That's right. It's basic safeguarding but interestingly one that lots of trans groups are keen to abandon. GIRES spent years "training" adults who work with children that they could keep confidences in schools and we've all seen countless trans policies advising adults that parents may be unsympathetic with secrets being kept from them.

Needmoresleep · 10/10/2022 10:48

Taking my tin hat off for a moment.

There has been a huge opportunity cost of supporting Mermaids. That money could have gone elsewhere. We have already seen funding diversion from lesbian charities to trans charities. I assume the same applies to children.

I went to a charity event last week to raise funds for research into childhood brain tumours. Brain tumours are the second most common childhood cancer after leukaemia, and the largest cause of cancer death for the under 40s. Yet hardly on the radar for the corporate sector. Then this weekend the football club I support announced it will be hosting a charity match in aid of NACOA (National Association for Children of Addiction). I had not heard of this charity, nor do I know how good their safeguarding is, but clearly a really deserving cause. Starbucks, Wagamama, Lush - time to be properly effective and not just use charity as a woke signalling marketing tool? Calum Best, who is a patron, gets my vote over Emma Watson.

And this is before I get started on the EDI industry getting back on track and talking about the real barriers faced by people with disability, by people from different backgrounds, etc.

rogdmum · 10/10/2022 11:15

In the Youth Forum, sometimes a moderator would pop into a thread where a suicidal child had posted to offer a private chat/suggest they contact The Samaritans, but on other occasions none were in sight and it was up to other adolescents to give advice. I had an example in my complaint to the CC in 2020. These posts were left standing which I also didn’t think was appropriate in a supposedly safe forum with children as young as 12 reading.

IcakethereforeIam · 10/10/2022 11:17

I saw an article in the Guardian today (should really reduce that to an initialism)...isaaitgt on challenging 'expert witnesses re. parental alienation.

This is a link to a memo. giving courts guidance on credence to give to expert witnesses. I don't know how relevant it is but 'expertise' on transgenderism in children seem to be as much about belief, so it may be pertinent. I think this thread is now a resource so, if it might be helpful, I'll leave it here. I have read it, but I have a very low tolerance for legalese. Apologies for time wasting if it lacks relevance. It's a download, if it works at all.

WarriorN · 10/10/2022 12:22

@Needmoresleep that story demonstrates how many people work behind the scenes to prevent true safeguarding.

Some of the people in all this are ridiculously naïve. Others are definitely not.

FannyCann · 10/10/2022 13:00

Excellent post Needmoresleep
It is infuriating how so many have just thrown cash at the trendy charity whilst ignoring all the other deserving causes. And ditto for the EDI industry apparently focusing on just one group.

So glad that the National Lottery and I think I saw Children in Need have pulled the funding.
I think mermaids went on a recruitment binge after receiving more money than they knew what to do with. They won't even have to go through a redundancy process with most of the new recruits now as it looks like they'll be resigning for...reasons. So that will save them a bit of cash as their income contracts.

Birdsweepsin · 10/10/2022 13:05

You know, it was only a couple of months ago that they were preening about a submission to the UN Human Rights Periodic Review.

How times have changed, hey?

Can I ask you more knowledgeable people if there has been any legal action from parents against the directors of this charity?

VestofAbsurdity · 10/10/2022 13:45

Not yet @Grievedbutrelieved . I've heard there is a Law firm looking to launch a class action but don't know any other details.

Grievedbutrelieved · 10/10/2022 13:54

@VestofAbsurdity
Thank you.

I noted there is a Dr Bell listed as a trustee of Mermaids. Is there any connection to Keira Bell?
