Tactical bullying and intimidation of victims and critical dissent to avoid scrutiny has a whole industry.
We know its widely used in legal circles.
It is widely employed by abusive men in the family courts. The use of the police to harass as part of coercive control is well known but is poorly understood and recognised by the courts. The backlash and scandal about the lack of transparency of the family courts is very much rooted in this lack of understanding and how its resulting in incredibly inconsistent and troubling rulings.
'Our Stef' was another good example in action that people will be aware of here by harassing and intimidating by strategic litigation.
It also happens at higher levels. To the point that UK recently changed the law to make SLAPPS a criminal offence in its own right. Across Europe, there is political encouragement to do the same. See this for a good explanation of SLAPPS and what is going on more widely across Europe:

There is real concern that strategic abuse of the power of authority against ordinary citizens is damaging and harmful to the public interest.
Yet this is completely opposite to the US where no such attempts are being made. Its very much a social contagion that has come from the US's letigious framework and culture.
Once you see it and identify it, it's much more obvious. Our Police service should be a lot more aware of it happening and more importantly how it's been corrupted by lobbying to ALLOW it to happen.
But again, here Mermaids are very much in the centre of trends that aren't conducive to transparency and empowering public voices.
When we are campaigning against certain things its very much worth knowing how the likes of Mermaids and Stonewall fit in with wider trends - especially when we know that there are concerns about the same type of behavior in other areas. It helps to strengthen cases by understanding what the problem is and how it's creating injustice.
This is about the power dynamics and enforcement of public rights against authority which seeks to make out that those rights don't exist and to silence group actions which have power through numbers.

To create a you are either with us or against us narrative whilst also doing some dam dodgy stuff and actively and consciously hanging out with some pretty nefarious circles rather than being in a stopped clock scenario.
