The first thread, towards the end of which there was a discussion about having a second thread but it wasn't added:

Mermaids being investigated by the charity commission
http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4644323-mermaids-being-investigated-by-the-charity-commissionn_

There's been a new development so maybe a second thread would be useful:

Lottery pauses trans charity cash during investigation

It's hard to know how they survived someone taking her 15 year old son to thailand... [how on earth did we get where we are?!?!?]

Demographics isn't it.

We have one group of people who are protected for cutting and sewing together of their child's genitals.

And another who are praised for it. Invited onto schools to explain how they did it and why . And whos actions lead to millions of pounds/dollars in medical treatment.

Theres one very obvious difference

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/10/2022 13:59

Prosecuted...

Damn auto correct.

Yes it's incredible isn't it? They are obviously teflon coated.

It appears some NHS trusts are now instructing staff not to signpost patients to mermaids and delete references from support material

mobile.twitter.com/ripx4nutmeg/status/1578717592076025859

Hmmm, I wonder what happens when the parents of those children that were signposted to Mermaids by that trust, get contacted by the lawyers advocating for a 'class action'.

And if there's no such thing as a trans child and mermaids aren't qualified to treat gender dysphoria, how will the NHS explain why they sent dozens of vulnerable children in their direction?

PronounssheRa · 08/10/2022 14:46

Signalbox · 08/10/2022 13:47

Oh wow! It’s hard to imagine how Mermaids can possibly survive all of this.

Even if they survive the charity commission review, mermaids income stream and sphere of influence will be hit very badly, and ultimately it was all by their own hand.

nauticant · 08/10/2022 14:47

We suggest that you do not signpost to this charity at this time and remove references to them from any support materials you may have.

Note how NHS Black Country are hedging their bets, and appear to be open to Mermaids being signposted to again in the future.

MajorieEks · 08/10/2022 14:50

Seems a watchful waiting approach is appropriate sometimes then!

Yes surely u either believe something is the right course of action or u don't. Presumably anyone sign posting to organisations has actually looked into them ? Why do you need a get out clause? Was it a medical decision or a political one? Whos on charge of researching etc cos they'd be nothing to worry about of the job had been done correctly surely?.they nhs wouldn't be confessing they don't follow best practice would they?

LGBT+ Conservatives AT LGBTCons
Following the suspension of the Conservative parliamentary whip from Conor Burns MP, we have suspended his patronage of the LGBT+ Conservatives pending the conclusion of investigations.

Malcolm Clark AT TwisterFilm
1./ How dysfunctional are LGBTCons?
They've had to suspend a patron after claims of groping but the Conservatives' official LGBT+ group still hasn't made a comment about a paedophile apologist trustee at Mermaids, an organisation with which it has an intimate relationship.

2./ In its 2021 Annual Report the Chair cited, among her proudest work, advising Mermaids and Stonewall how to influence MPs and organising a zoom briefing for MPs about the Gender Recognition Act "with help from Mermaids". This is how the LGBTQ+ lobby operates:
insidiously.

3./ At the same time the LGBT Conservatives and its stooges in the APPG tried to get alternative views on the GRA silenced, even demanding the LGB Alliance should be banned from having a stand at Conference. They share the LGBTQ+ lobby's fear of debate.

4./ Judging character has never been their strong point. After all, bullying Crispin Blunt was a luminary, acting as MC at their Conference event last year. Here's their fawning interview of Blunt just 2 months before he defended a convicted paedophile MP.

5./ LGBT Cons also agitated for the Safe To Be Me conference, an elaborate attempt to purloin £43M of taxpayers money for groups like Mermaids. LGB people who care about the health of our democracy should wonder whose interests this group really serves.

Seems a watchful waiting approach is appropriate sometimes then!

As Corinna Cohn from Heterodorx said the other day on Twitter:

A moratorium on transgender surgeries for minors simply buys us time as a nation to figure out if this is right for children or not. It's completely safe and totally reversible.

Reading Tish's queering the NSPCC blog made me lose hope!!
Although it would be great if msm picked this up now as a part of the broader issue.
Don't have much faith they will though 😔

ResisterRex · 08/10/2022 16:04

Tish's blog, Dr Em's essay (Trojan horse?) and MN made me realise how much trouble we were in.

I'll be interested to see these screen shots when available:

Screen shots of concerns sent to Charity Commission in 2020 seem to have been added:

This was apparently also sent to the National Lottery who didn't acknowledge receipt.

Message deleted, even though nobody was named....

Anyway, I have my original email to the Lottery, which voiced all our concerns.

Head of Stonewall asks the right questions but for the wrong reasons... Does anyone know what she said? I think there's a delay in sharing Ted talks, am I right?

Mermaids being investigated by the Charity Commission - thread 2

Article in Spiked www.spiked-online.com/2022/10/08/mermaids-is-the-trans-house-of-cards-finally-falling/

"The damaging ideas of the trans lobby are crumbling under public scrutiny."

" One lobby group that was repeatedly alleged to have undue influence on the Tavistock was Mermaids. Mermaids is just one of many trans lobby groups to argue that all children have a ‘gender identity’, which can sometimes be distinct from their biological sex. This identity, Mermaids argues, should be affirmed. That is, socially affirmed – through the use of preferred pronouns and new names. And also medically affirmed – usually with puberty-blocking drugs, cross-sex hormones and, in some cases, surgeries, from mastectomies for girls to vaginoplasties for boys." ...

""Nevertheless, when faced with this ultimatum, [affirm gender identity or children will commit suicide], people who should have known better lost their critical faculties. The great and the good lined up to be seen on the side of this new, sympathetic victim – the ‘transgender child’. Embracing trans ideology and endorsing the work of Mermaids was one way to do this."

This reminds me Julie Bindel commented in a recent article: 'There is no such thing as a transgender child'. Even were you to you to accept the possibility of the existence of such a thing - why do people apply this term wholesale to any and every child who simply says I want to be a boy or a girl?
Similarly, I've asked before why do people readily throw around the term 'social transition' when speaking of children. Isn't it rather, as put in this article: ' using a transgender person’s correct [?] name and pronoun (ie, socially affirming his or her gender identity)'? That's all it is. Bit of a fiction to call it transition - unless you are say, Nicola Sturgeon.

Good Spiked article.

It lays the point out quite clearly:

Mermaids took the LGBA to court wanting it stripped of charitable status due to it raising and sharing concerns about the risks of the way in which the TQ+ political lobby and its organisations worked with children.

At this point, there seems no doubt from the evidence that having those concerns was entirely justified.

Quick guilt-by-association resource dump.

in 2015 the ‘Sexual Cultures 2’ conference was held at the London campus of Sunderland Uni.

One of the presenters was Jacob Breslow.

one of the organisers was Meg John Barker.

others involved include Jane Fae, Aisling Gallagher, Allsorts Youth Project and Mark Carrigan.
