Ricky Gervais can spout a lot of utter shite at times, but on this on he’s spot on.

I love the definition of ‘…sincerely identifies’ 😂 How is that level of sincerity measured - is there some sort of ‘how sincerely do you identify as a woman’ quiz that men have to undertake before being given a ‘I’m officially a sincere woman’ pink sparkly badge to wear on their flowery blouses?

GretaGip · 02/10/2022 13:57

Exactly. Flowers

Most women don't identify as a woman because They Are One

Cuppasoupmonster · 02/10/2022 14:01

‘That’s the only definition that works for everyone’

Well it doesn’t work for me Hmm he means it works for men.

I find arrogance/ignorance - & utter hypocrisy - of imposing these wholly new „definitions“, recently formulated to accommodate a small proportion of the population, onto 51% of it increasingly upsetting. It’s the gulf between standards that I find truly revealing: a female opposing this with „But I don’t identify as a woman,“ is seen as pedantic at best & bigoted at worst. I questioned it in a staff training session, gently pointing out that it imposed on me a rather amorphous societal/cultural understanding of woman with which I may not agree, while erasing my biological reality… yet somehow still felt guiltily petty for doing so. The presentation, ironically, was about the way in which dominant cultures may railroad individuals into denying/diluting their authentic selves. Again ironically (although luckily, I suppose) the trainer’s response was polite mystification.

It pains me to agree with anything Ricky Gervais says but on these issues he's 100% right. I can't believe we're in a world like this now where the meaning of woman is being argued about and anyone can be one if they feel like it. My head hurts 🙃

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 02/10/2022 14:14

I'm glad Ricky is continuing to speak up.
Tom Williamson so intent on re -defining woman but not mentioning the definition of men as usual. The arrogance of 'oh they can mean any old thing it doesn't matter'.

YouSirNeighMmmm · 02/10/2022 14:17

I sincerely identify as non-binary on the school run but not at an other times. I do this to show up how ridiculous the whole self id thing is, and the nonsense of gender fluidity. I am not sure my sincerity in any way make my non binary status more legitimate or real.

Interesting (and depressing) isn't it how nobody goes after Ricky Gervais for his GC views, but God help any woman who speaks out?

Very fair point, this.

The misogyny in the JKR-bashing is as plain as the nose on your face.

Are you talking about the same Ricky Gervais that caused so much controversy for telling a GC joke on his Netflix special, with demands for him to be cancelled etc?

Totalityloss · 02/10/2022 16:26

That Tom bloke is basically admitting that he’s advocating for a definition that makes no sense, because it’s the only way to include a group of people who don’t actually fit into the category he’s defining.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/10/2022 16:48

I used to loathe him, but things like this (and his utter love for his rescue cat) changed things.

TheMarzipanDildo · 02/10/2022 16:56

I tend to agree with RG when he’s being serious about stuff tbh. I like his animal rights campaigning too.

I think he’s logical.

RebOrHon · 02/10/2022 16:56

I was never a fan before but that Ricky Gervais tweet has just seen him promoted into to my ‘decent bloke after all’ category.

Atmywitsend29 · 02/10/2022 17:00

I fucking love Ricky 😂

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/10/2022 17:07

I think he's just brilliant. I suspect he agrees with me...

TheKeatingFive · 02/10/2022 17:22

Men do get cancelled. Graham Linehan being the obvious example.

Avoiding it is more to do with power. Gervais and JKR have enough clout in their industries to withstand the howls from the braying mob. Others aren't so lucky.

MsFogi · 02/10/2022 17:25

Interesting that 'sincerity' has been added to the definition to ensure that the 'simply identifies as a woman' definition doesn't continue to sink their ship. However I suspect the sincerity test wills simply be used against women who use the examples of identifying as no-gender/another age/race/anything at all in order to negate their argument because those examples aren't 'sincere' not like all those 'brave women' men.

Carproblem · 02/10/2022 17:39

Only because I really need to understand all points of view on any topic because that how you think for yourself....

Can anyone help here....

This bloke says "anatomy and chromosomes work for 99% of people" (regarding whether they're a woman or not.)

Who's the 1% here? Is he pulling an "intersex" card? Or does he think 1% of women have a penis? Because his stats are way out on either front.

I don't think this is misogyny. Ricky Gervais has been vocal about controversial things forever and has made it very clear that he does not care what you think about his opinions.

I think people don't even bother trying to cancel him because his audience like him exactly for these kind of views and he doesn't care.

Chicheguevara · 02/10/2022 18:01

I used to work at an office where I had to put my pronouns on my email signature. In case anyone misconstrued my feminine name as ambiguous. It was a departmental ruling. We had a meeting to ask how we identified. They asked if I identified as a woman, I said ‘no, I am a woman’ they asked if I was ‘natal’. My reply of “say what, now? “ while looking a smidge confused did not endear me to my manager (half my age and seriously up himself). I stuck the environment 3 months and then handed in my phone & laptop and walked away.

I am with Ricky on this one. I live in a city with a lot of trans M to Fs. Live and let live but don’t get me started on racing against them as I get peeved. I am similarly not happy about sharing club changing/shower facilities and often get changed in my car, along with the other dozen or so women. Not all in my car, but in our own cars. I know that’s a different issue, but sometimes I feel too old for all this.

Musomama1 · 02/10/2022 18:01

I'm surprised that RG really gets it too and speaks out. I'm assuming there are many more celebs who feel the same that aren't as uncancellable as himself and JKR.

I'm not a fan of RG's comedy but can still think he's a decent bloke.

It just seems that this concept goes way over the heads of most of the activist types.
