Students call for professor at University of Southern Maine to be replaced after teaching that there are only two sexes

According to the Bangor Daily News, a newspaper in Maine, USA:

Nearly two dozen graduate students at the University of Southern Maine are demanding their education professor be replaced after the professor allegedly said only two biological sexes exist.

The students said professor Christy Hammer’s remarks were inaccurate and transphobic.

After all but one student walked out of Hammer’s class on Sept. 14 in protest, they demanded a facilitated restorative justice meeting between the 22 students and their professor.

They got it, but, according to students, Hammer maintained her position saying non-binary biological sex designations are merely variations on male and female. Now they want Hammer gone.

It would have been better to throw the question back at the student and when they answer that there are 3/4/5/however many sexes, kindly and patronisingly explain those are genders and sex and gender are different and it’s terribly transphobic to conflate them. I wondered that too, @puffyisgood , because we women routinely behave like this once a month. I see it all the time - women yelling at shop assistants, showing how offended we are at perceived slights by trashing shops and using threatening body language, not to mention growling like dogs (bitches??). We also never forget to carry micro pink bags so that everyone is clear which sex we are. We hoist them over our shoulder as we make a dramatic exit, slamming the door. Pesky hormones.

Sorry I said I would stop overcommenting but could I please gently push back against this “nothing to see here” comment? Something analogous to this is happening to me now. I’m a faculty member in a good STEM department at a mid-tier research university. The details are different but the theme is the same: expression of anodyne statements of fact, denunciation by a student, claims of dehumanizing, and amplification of that person’s outrage by other well-meaning members of the university. These are not rare events, and they don’t just happen in the hothouse environment of Faculties of Education.

When I was a student - lecturers were always saying things (on purpose) to get discussions going and (when I did art) to encourage students to push themselves and develop their own thinking.

Except that it was the student who specifically raised the issue and asked the question about biological sex. So it would be like if a black person put up their hand in a class and asked the teacher "Do black people overall score higher or lower thsn asian people in intelligence tests?" And then accusing the teacher of harassment when they give the factually correct answer.
