Students call for professor at University of Southern Maine to be replaced after teaching that there are only two sexes

According to the Bangor Daily News, a newspaper in Maine, USA:

Nearly two dozen graduate students at the University of Southern Maine are demanding their education professor be replaced after the professor allegedly said only two biological sexes exist.

The students said professor Christy Hammer’s remarks were inaccurate and transphobic.

After all but one student walked out of Hammer’s class on Sept. 14 in protest, they demanded a facilitated restorative justice meeting between the 22 students and their professor.

They got it, but, according to students, Hammer maintained her position saying non-binary biological sex designations are merely variations on male and female. Now they want Hammer gone.

Professor Kathleen Stock has tweeted about this ridiculous situation:

Jerry Coyne, an emeritus professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Chicago, has also just written about it: whyevolutionistrue.com/2022/10/01/professor-in-maine-demonized-for-teaching-that-humans-have-two-sexes-students-walk-out-and-demand-her-suspension/

Iirc, I think Genesis (not the band) might also be gunning for they/them.

The link to the Scientific America article from 2018 was discussed on here a few weeks ago I believe (a single case of 46XY daughter who had an XY child or something?). Can anyone remember the name of the thread?

‘I felt under personal attack’?

By who? Charles Darwin?

Grin

Is the student saying that being non binary is a third sex?

StrangeLookingParasite · 01/10/2022 20:32

Biologists believe there is a larger spectrum to sex than just the male-female binary.

No they fucking don't.

picklemewalnuts · 01/10/2022 21:00

It feels like such a decadent concept. I mean, how excessively affluent do you need to be to lose sight of reality like that? And in a time when we are really struggling. Perhaps it's escapism?

FemaleAndLearning · 01/10/2022 21:03

I suppose it doesn't help in America that they use gender to mean sex and gender to mean gender identity.

What should happen, the university backs its teacher, the students flunk her class and fail to qualify as teachers. Multiple bullets dodged.

What shouldn't happen, the university caves into the little bigots, they go on to spread their poison.

Doesn't Stephen King live in Maine?

He does, but he'd be right behind the little imbeciles.

Claire Ainsworth who wrote that Scientific American opinion piece on sex has later clarified that she didn't mean to imply that biological sex is not binary, but that anatomy and physical appearance of individuals of either sex show variation.

The students should be kicked out. How the hell they ever got into uni is a mystery. Unless, of course, the can produce the additional sexes.

WandaWomblesaurus · 01/10/2022 21:18

Does "Whiny pathetic narcissist student" class as a gender identity?

KittenKong · 01/10/2022 21:24

I believe it does

I keep hoping something will p...fuck...take him to the* *top of a mountain. This is in his backyard and pretty indefensible.

catandcoffee · 01/10/2022 21:32

How are they going to actually cope in the real working world.

JacquelinePot · 01/10/2022 21:49

I'm really quite frightened at the prospect of coming across people like this at work. Most people I work with (large corporate) are 30+ but it's only a matter of time, isn't it? How do they function in the real world and how do sensible people around them manage?

"That's nice dear. Now getting back to the figures..."

faffadoodledo · 01/10/2022 21:56

They're graduate students too.
Good grief

Delphinium20 · 01/10/2022 22:16

There's so many things wrong with this, including pandering to have a restorative justice session with the entitled students. Why bother going to college when you know more than the professors? Isn't that a massive waste of money (I'm going on a limb here to assume the non-binary complainer has an excess of parental financial assistance). Parents of young children, beware who is graduating with recent teacher training. Try to opt for the older teachers, especially those teaching biology and grammar lessons.

Sadly, this behavior reminds me of a young non-binary adult I know, who recently shouted at an 11yr old boy with autism for making 'uneducated judgements on people'. You can't make this up. I had to apologize to the young boy's mother for being subjected to this adult in my home. The non-binary adult thought shouty education was social justice work, and still doesn't understand what is wrong with yelling at children. In my experience, non-binary is anti-social behavior.

In my observations, they don't function well and end up in poor situations living off family or social services.

To be fair if you are frightened of someone because their belief is not based in material biology, then there are 2 dysfunctional people at your workplace...

And yeah neither of you is going to last long with that type of mental stamina...

Harsh.

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 02/10/2022 00:18

Those students just seem really dense. They have confused the concept 'identity' with 'sex' and then had a big tantrum when people have not gone along with their confusion.

fUNNYfACE36 · 02/10/2022 00:42

I don't think the fact that there indeed are only 2 biological sexes is the issue here, it is whether it needed to be said in the circumstances .
.It us like saying that overall black people score lower than white and Asian people on intelligence tests. You just don't end to bring it up

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/10/2022 00:48

Of course it needs to be said. A lot more, in fact.

One of the students who objected is studying to become a high school science teacher.

Of course nonsensical ideas about how procreation works need to be challenged, this person wants to teach this bullshit in schools!

BrrrGettingColder · 02/10/2022 00:55

These are university students who get upset when a lecturer tells them that there are just two sexes?

Deargoddesses, wot next!
