Fingal Council Lost the Plot (Deleted Library Twitter Account)

rogdmum · 21/09/2022 21:03

The Fingal Library Twitter account was found to be following various clearly suspect accounts like Maya Forstater’s, Allison Bailey’s etc. We can’t have that, can we?

Fortunately Councillor, Karen Power, was right on the case!

“Majorly concerned with the accounts the @Fingalcoco @fingallibraries is following, will raise it immediately with Council officials”

twitter.com/cllrkarenpower/status/1572628876777639936?s=21&t=lspICvWsfkuhVuovcGTO_w

Phew!

The Council quickly saw the error of their ways, and Karen was ever so grateful:

”Well done @Fingalcoco and @emerogorman for rectifying this situation so quickly and for contacting @RobertBohan to reassure them that the libraries are a safe space for LGBT+ kids”

twitter.com/cllrkarenpower/status/1572646499414310912?s=21&t=lspICvWsfkuhVuovcGTO_w

The rectification being the deletion of the Fingal Library Twitter account:

“Due to unauthorised activity today, the @fingallibraries account has been suspended. Information on Fingal Libraries will be available from this Twitter account and also from Fingal Libraries' other social media accounts.”

twitter.com/fingalcoco/status/1572652954213289985?s=21&t=lspICvWsfkuhVuovcGTO_w

Plot completely lost. 🙄

Wow, I could be sarcastic and say “Not a bit Authoritarian, Oh No.” but actually that just just shocking.

Crunchingleaf · 21/09/2022 21:52

The comments are going better then I would have thought.

Believerinbiology · 21/09/2022 22:08

Idiots. She seemed to know that women face issues men do not back in February or maybe that's just because women's safety was being discussed at the time following various attacks/ murders www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/fingal-councillors-to-ask-women-how-best-to-ensure-safe-public-space-1.4802275

SeagullSausage · 21/09/2022 22:12

The comments are v heartening

What a terrifying world we live in.

RhannionKPSS · 21/09/2022 22:22

Well Karen is getting her arse on a plate on Twitter now

Believerinbiology · 21/09/2022 22:32

Yes vast majority of comments agree it's batshit. Haven't been in the library since before covid but must rectify that....and I can think of lots of books I'm going to request.

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2022 22:49

JFC. It's the glee that gets me. They're so delighted with themselves every time they get someone disappeared.

I mean, cancelled.

SeagullSausage · 21/09/2022 23:17

She's very very convinced of her own righteousness on her feed though. Nothing has given her a pause for thought at all.

It is so offensive to be so sure that you are championing the most vulnerable, whilst cancelling a black, lesbian, cser survivor...

Cailleach1 · 22/09/2022 07:31

Don't know who that R.Bo is but looked at his twitter to see this load of irony. Sorry, DR R. Bo.

I’ve always loved libraries. My parents gave me their reading cards & a letter saying I could get anything (even adult) from the mobile library, aged 8. (Lady Chatterley was the only book where I was asked for the letter). It was a bad week if I didn’t read 10 books.

Lady Chatterly's lover was banned in Ireland. It's great to keep the old tradition of banning things alive with each generation. Whatever the lads think of as the current 'bad' things. Dangerous ideas giving people (even women, the horror) notions of their rights, fairness and equality.

Also Robbie, the bro, is retweeting this from an a/c called 'The Foggy Jew'

According to a lot of English people who have oddly Strong Opinions™️ about a library in Fingal, it's apparently now censorship to be told you can't follow cranks on your work Twitter account.

Who defines 'crank'? Robbie and Foggy when they don't like something? Have Robbie and Foggy ever reflected upon the idea that they may be the 'cranks'?

The irony of these hypocritical laddies! They certainly seem to like a taste their own righteousness.

Cailleach1 · 22/09/2022 07:49

Robbie (PhD) has a large expanse range of tweets about all the material he/she/furry had access to in libraries. How it was great altogether to have access this wide range.

Perish the thought others would have access to a wide range of ideas. And, especially ones the bros don't like. God forbid people have access to ideas of women's rights; or the rights of lesbians. Or, the rights of children to be kept safe from harm. Cranky ones like that!

Is that Dr Robert Bohan we’re talking about? He tweeted about being delighted about the decision and saying Fingal librarians had contacted him to assure him the library is a safe space for LGBT+ kids.

He’s now blocked me (So sad. 😢 ) because I’d said I found his tweet absurd and asked why my daughter wouldn’t necessarily be safe in a library depending on who they follow on Twitter. What might happen to her?

On a serious note. I hate this narrative given to young people like my daughter, that the world is against them, that they are victims just for being themselves. It’s not healthy and not a message I want to give to her. What a way to build up anxiety and paranoia just because some bloke gets off on being a “saviour”. It’s harmful not helpful.

Cailleach1 · 22/09/2022 08:46

Yep, that Robert (PhD). I think Foggy now has to tweet Robert Bohan directly. It seems that for some reason Robert (Irish) had an oddly strong opinion about something that happened in England. And tweeted someone based in England about it! From his tweet we know Foggy thinks it is wrong to send your opinions across borders on the world wide inter web (tweet was on my first post).

Robbie (PhD) tweeted Hi @RadioEssex, is it your policy for your employees to be homophobic & transphobic online?

Why does it appear to me that misogyny seems to be fine though, and homophobia when targeting lesbians? When the lads have no skin in the game.

CrossPurposes · 22/09/2022 11:01

I should have guessed she was Green. I dispair. Clearly it is a party of people who don't care about the environment but are using it to further another agenda.

ScreamingMeMe · 22/09/2022 11:02

And she was co-opted, not elected.

ScreamingMeMe · 22/09/2022 11:49

This artist bloke is disgusting. "Blood libel" ffs!

What a disgusting man & she is a bloody disgrace to her country. What a pair of utter misogynistic shits.

ArabellaScott · 22/09/2022 12:45

So she works for a planning company as a 'political expert', and at the same time as an unelected councillor.

ArabellaScott · 22/09/2022 12:46

'She is also listed on the State lobbying register as working for local authorities on development and zoning.

The company she works for, Turley, describes itself as a “full service national planning and development consultancy”. The firm describes Ms Power as a “political expert”.'

Ugh..She sounds poisonous. As does Bohan. I've encountered Foggy on Twitter before. Another pompous twerp.

Tragically I'm suspended on Twitter now ! How is the ratio going ?

Theundertaker · 22/09/2022 13:01

Looks like Karen Power has protected her tweets after the altercation with Alison.

BloodyHellKen · 22/09/2022 13:48

This thread reminds me of a similar-ish one a few weeks ago where someone I've never heard of, but who is far right apparently had their bank account closed. does anyone else remember this thread?

There were lots of people cheering the closed ban account and I see in the Times today that Toby young had had his Daily Sceptic PayPal account closed. I've never read the Daily Sceptic and I don't particularly like Toby Young but I think it is very dangerous what we are starting to see.

Organisations closing accounts/blocking individuals from their services with no apparent come back because they don't like their opinions. Note these people are not doing anything illegal, they just have opinions the service provider doesn't like.

Some people might cheer on the closing of accounts of political groups they find distasteful but how would you feel if you were blocked from a service because you don't buy into TWAW, or compulsory vaccination, or you don't recycle enough? The list of 'problematic' things that could get you cancelled is endless depending on who owns the service. It's a horrible thought IMO.

MangyInseam · 22/09/2022 13:51

And then from another direction, in Canada this past summer protesters over covid restrictions had their bank accounts frozen by the government. And certain groups of people were also thought this was a great thing.

It's all very disturbing.

That was my thread:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4634438-to-ask-you-to-read-this-cautionary-tale-of-what-were-sleepwalking-into?

In the OP I questioned that a lot of people using this site think TWANW and if banks/tech companies have the authority to freeze accounts and block someone from accessing their own money because they find their views abhorrent, what happens when they find your views abhorrent?

Gave up in the end as was called, in no particular order: racist, a terrorist sympathiser, batshit, conspiracy theorist, white supremacist, idiot, etc. Though I did update it again last night with some choice quotes from users who said "that would never happen" along with links to show it actually happening.
