How to answer What is your gender?

respectmysex · 21/09/2022 18:06

I know this has been asked before but I'm never sure what to do in each of these circumstances.

I don't have a gender identity. How would you/should I respond to this question?

Screen shot attached. No option have a box for me to expand on my answer.

I always click Other because I don’t have a gender. If there’s a box I’ll write “my biological sex is female”.

SuperCamp · 21/09/2022 18:09

I would tick ‘other’ , as gender free.

Or I’d it is a paper form, or one you can edit, I would cross out ‘gender identity’ and write ‘sex’

bellinisurge · 21/09/2022 18:10

Gender identity isn't a protected characteristic so they have no basis for asking. Cheeky feckers. Is this supposed to be some sort of equality monitoring?

respectmysex · 21/09/2022 18:15

It's not an official equality monitoring form I don't think, it's for a market research company to select participants. Maybe it is equality monitoring on that level. They also asked ethnic origin.

It's worse than you imply OP because it asks you to confirm your gender identity.

If it just said 'gender' you could maybe interpret it as sex. But this 'gender identity' nonsense is about this inner sense of who we are, not in any way our actual sex. They could map onto each other but not necessarily. So you aren't being given any chance to not to have one of these 'gender identity' things, you have to 'confirm' that you have one, even though there's zero evidence for their existence.

elferian · 21/09/2022 18:15

it does not even make sense from a TRA view. Transgender is not a gender identity - transgender identifies as male or female - that is the whole point.

Agree. I don't think they know what they are asking, do they? If they were really captured they'd know how to phrase the question and answers. I think it's written by someone trying their best to 'be kind'.

What a horrendous set of answers. This is all absolute bollocks now isn’t it. In almost all of these scenarios, I can’t work out why there isn’t just a question that asks participants to pick if there are a “man/ woman/ transman / transwoman”. That gives everyone the information that they what, is completely inclusive, and isn’t open to interpretation. But as a society we’ve tied ourselves up in knots with all sorts of bizarre language which means different things to different people.

FemaleAndLearning · 21/09/2022 18:29

I always answer other. If it allows I state I do not have a gender.
It is poor questioning and conflates sex and gender.

CortexInferior · 21/09/2022 18:33

"What's my gender"?!

OTHER. Very, totally "other".
With the subtitle "you have no idea" if it's
a paper form.
Extra fucking terrestrial.
In any online "additional comments/information" section I'd also put "none of your effing business".
Another trick for data harvesting and profiting
from us muggins.

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2022 18:40

Oh, that's an interesting pick 'n' mix of arbitrary mismatched concepts, isn't it?

Tick other and say you don't subscribe to 'gender identity', that's generally what I do.

Spanielsarepainless · 21/09/2022 18:41

I was going to join a dog training club till I discovered one of the compulsory questions on the application form was What gender. I said male! Alternative was female. I am female but loathe the conflation of gender and sex.

Gettingbythanks · 21/09/2022 18:54

Doesn’t ‘Agender’ mean you don’t have a gender identity, so it’s an option? I tend to completely ignore these types of questions tbh.

BubbleTeaBee · 21/09/2022 18:58

Some forms have a feedback box at the end. I usually tick other and elaborate here and give them a telling off for not including a question about sex and also offering male and female as gender identity answers as they are sex categories and the options should be man or woman if they must ask about gender identity

It means you don't have a gender but in a blue haired special way not a boring old feminist way so I don't think we are allowed to choose that as an option.

MrsJamin · 21/09/2022 19:10

If you include a question like that, you might as well ask what Hogwarts house they're in as the answers will be as much use. My council always asks this too.

Yes … sort of like by opting out of having a gender identity, you’re being complicit in its existence in the first place. Best swerve the question entirely.

Truthlikeness · 21/09/2022 20:19

I always select 'self describe' and say 'I don't have a gender identity, my sex is female.'

By using the term agender you are admitting that you believe in gender identity ideology.

Nellodee · 21/09/2022 20:54

The answer you are seeking for that question is “no”.

expandabandband · 21/09/2022 21:04

Gender is a scam. I borrowed that from DD

Wildlynx · 21/09/2022 21:11

Problem is if you answer anything other than m/f then this can be used to support those who are pushing the gender identity agenda. In my company the pride network are quoting that increasing number of people are identifying as gender different to their sex, based on surveys like these. I know they are conflating sex and gender, and misinterpreting but HR/SLT aren't aware /don't understand the subtleties (lies, damn lies and statistics... 🙄)

Igneococcus · 21/09/2022 22:14

Does an option box appear when you click "prefer to self-describe"?

CortexInferior · 21/09/2022 22:37

"What's your gender"?

How long do you fucking have?
Or care, for that matter.
WTF are you trying to sell here, you cretin?

Gender=Hilarity ensues
(72 of those by the latest count)
I'm working on it, pet.
There's so much Derrida/Butler deconstructionism
I need to wade through, can't say where or when...
I'll certainly come up with another "existential intuition".
One way or the other.
Reading bits of Heidegger's "Zein und Zeit" now

  • surely must be something in his Dasein, I can twist and exploit.

No L. Wittgenstein though.
Too fucking dense and precisely on target.
Sort of, you know, like logical even?
Analytical. That's the word.
We don't like them logical & analytical.
Too much work.
For anyone whose only argument is FEELINGS and
their lived experience.
Their truth.
So, you know - we don't do that.

So, what's your gender, pet?

leafinthewind · 21/09/2022 22:45

'Prefer not to say' - if a question gets too high a rate of 'prefer not to say' market research companies revise it.
