How to answer What is your gender?

respectmysex · 21/09/2022 18:06

I know this has been asked before but I'm never sure what to do in each of these circumstances.

I don't have a gender identity. How would you/should I respond to this question?

Screen shot attached. No option have a box for me to expand on my answer.

Does an option box appear when you click "prefer to self-describe"?

I believe a portal to the upside-down, where an endless procession of constantly metamorphising versions of one's past, present and future selves shimmers and warps in front of your eyes, singing snatches of David Bowie and inbetween asking you in an ever-shriller voice - 'why, why, why?'.

Maybe just when you're on the app, though.

I always select 'self describe' and say 'I don't have a gender identity, my sex is female.'

This.

NitroNine · 21/09/2022 23:27

It’s hugely frustrating that to select “agender” would be viewed/assumed as support of gender ideology rather than the rejection of it.

“Other”, unless it has a free text box to allow clarification, would be interpreted by any reasonable person as meaning “I have a gender identity not listed above” (& thus supporting gender ideology) - & above includes “agender”.

Of course, if we can finally make TRAs explain that we are agender they might abandon the word & we can have it? I’m sure they’d cope, they’d get to make a new flag, after all.

Some forms have a feedback box at the end. I usually tick other and elaborate here and give them a telling off for not including a question about sex and also offering male and female as gender identity answers as they are sex categories and the options should be man or woman if they must ask about gender identity

Utterly disagree with this. Why on earth would you let a tiny minority appropriate the terms man or woman and roll over to them in this fashion? Not like it's even got us anywhere productive. If anything, I would suggest masculine/feminine.

Igneococcus · 22/09/2022 06:59

OOoh @ArabellaScott I would love for a portal to open when I do a survey especially if there is music. That would be quite exciting.

In ethnicity questions, I usually click "White - other" and then often a "please specify" box pops up.

FemaleAndLearning · 22/09/2022 07:02

There should be two questions.

  1. What is your sex (registered at birth female, male or prefer not to say.
2.what is your gender identity? With the option none.

I filled in feedback at work on a survey about why people don't disclose personal info in surveys. I said that if the questions allowed to say none I would answer. Also the questions should reflect the protected characteristics, these should be asked first followed by other questions.

KittenKong · 22/09/2022 07:32

Why would #2 have any bearing on your dental treatment?

FemaleAndLearning · 22/09/2022 07:38

None for gender identity or religious questions I meant to say.

BubbleTeaBee · 23/09/2022 21:43

@GrumpyPanda oh I completely agree, but male and female are sex categories, so I suppose man and woman are preferable, but still inaccurate if ie a male is selecting woman. A male can't be a woman.

Metabigot · 24/09/2022 13:29

Going against the grain but I'd say agender. It's technically true. I don't have a gender because I don't believe in gender. Not because I'm a 13 year old who desperately wants to fit in and feel speshul.

Actually come to think of it the gender identity I most closely identity with is 'person'. Which seems to no longer be on the list. So maybe other is a better option.

You get to be under the stonewall umbrella which I find hilarious as a GC feminist. Woke will eat itself.

PardonmemynameisAlice · 24/09/2022 18:10

I've just had to tick 'prefer not to say' on the Yodel survey and then on the delivery satisfaction box ehi

PardonmemynameisAlice · 24/09/2022 18:12

Posted too soon,

And on the delivery satisfaction box they got a paragraph or two on the lesson of sex being male and female, not gender

BreatheAndFocus · 24/09/2022 19:21

I just had a medical appointment and had to fill in a form asking not only what my ‘gender identity ‘ was but what sex I was assigned at birth. Fortunately it was a paper form so I was able to cross bits out, including the “assigned”.

While I was there, they asked if I’d update hound DC’s forms too - and yes, those forms included the same crap about assigned sex and gender identity 🙄

BreatheAndFocus · 24/09/2022 19:22

(No idea where the “hound” came from there 😂) My DC is neither a dog nor identifies as one 😆

Metabigot · 24/09/2022 19:44

I really don't get the assigned at birth thing when everyone knows you can tell the baby's sex from a harmony test at 9w.

So does that mean ( in tra-land) that a male foetus could be assigned any differently once out of the womb?

Assigned from conception doesn't quite have the same ring to it

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 25/09/2022 12:27

options depend of whether and to what extent you're prepared to 'out' yourself as GC -
1)Do as @Raddix suggests "I always select 'self describe' and say 'I don't have a gender identity, my sex is female.' "
2) choose self describe and put something ambiguous like "questioning"
3) choose self describe and say something like I identify as someone who thinks 'gender identity' is a sexist homophobic ideology.

clockworklime · 10/10/2022 11:49

It's an absolute mess isn't it? Recently I saw on a website the following:

  • Male
  • Female
  • LBGTQ+
  • Other
ReunitedThorns · 10/10/2022 21:26

If there's Other which is a free text field, just keyboard smash. It will mess up their analytics.

TheClogLady · 10/10/2022 22:48

KittenKong · 21/09/2022 23:00

This.

Or if the box is too small

Gender: N/A Sex: F

BettyFilous · 10/10/2022 22:59

I’ve taken to ticking the ‘prefer not to say’ or ‘refused’ box. It’s not a legal monitoring requirement under the EA2010 so dubious legally and using ‘other’ risks inflating the number of staff or service users with special gender identities if reported at top level. Basically they can fuck right off. I’m not playing.
