'I call on all woman in the world; say her name. Mahsa Amini, 22, was
murdered by hijab police in Iran.

Her family confirmed that she was beaten by police for the crime of wearing “bad hijab”.

Please join us in sharing her name & story.

There are protests happening in Iran because of this. She did not deserve it. :-(

Theo Twitter thread is so upsetting, they feel like we don’t know or care? Does tweeting help? Does it put pressure on Tehran? I am at a loss about what to do other than feel so sad, I don’t know enough about what is helpful. Twitter

Neither do I. And there are hundreds of very brave Iranian women, both at Mahsa's funeral and beyond, protesting by burning hijabs or gathering on the street. I wish their voices could be more widely heard, but I'm not sure what could tip the balance.

Heartbreaking and fury making.
Brave, brave young woman.
So very sorry.

Mahsa Amini. There is no justice in this world.

Olderbadger1 · 19/09/2022 19:27

💐Mahsa Amini💐
The bravery of the women who continue to protest is beyond belief. I feel so utterly helpless/useless in the face of this horror.

nepeta · 19/09/2022 19:50

The Iranian women protesting are truly stunning and brave. And so are the Afghan women protesting. It takes enormous courage to do what these women are doing: Protesting the oppression of women and girls just because of sex.

Mahsa Amini. Remember her name.

As others have said, I wish there was something more I could do. Is there a petition? Calling diplomats in our own countries? Anything?

Crickets?

EdithStourton · 19/09/2022 20:14

Mahsa Amini.

I have DDs her sort of age.

HandShoe · 19/09/2022 20:16

Crickets indeed. Iran's head of state wasn't invited to the queen's funeral, only the ambassador to the UK. That'll have them shaking in their boots...!

TheBiologyStupid · 19/09/2022 21:24

Meant to say that's likely to be the first correct use of the phrase "stunning and brave" on these pages.

Blackopal · 20/09/2022 06:59

Agree, I feel such admiration for these women.
To protest in the face of such treatment, I doubt I would be capable of it.

NitroNine · 20/09/2022 07:47

A woman in her sixties has been killed by the police for taking part in the protests; & a 10 year old girl has been shot in the head.

Masih Alinejad is providing incredible (albeit graphic, which is understandable but not everyone can deal with, so a warning seems right) coverage of the protests.

I read somewhere, but now can’t find it, a tweet from a woman protesting in Iran saying the most helpful thing Western women can do right now is amplify their voices on social media. Ms Alinejad has thanked JK Rowling for doing so, certainly.

Of course, the other thing on social media is that a certain Iranian leader’s account is allegedly somewhat problematic. If he is tweeting things that break the rules, he should be reported. I’m not - I repeat not - advocating mass-reporting the account on any kind of spurious basis. But if he is tweeting things that breech the rules, as I have seen repeatedly alleged, those of us who use Twitter have a duty to report him to improve the site for everyone.

ArabellaScott · 20/09/2022 08:01

Oh my god no, how can they be so hateful? Is the child alive?

I'm not on Twitter so can't help with that, I'm afraid.

NitroNine · 20/09/2022 08:56

I don’t know about the wee girl I’m afraid - all I could find was the tweet I linked. Being able to take someone to get help after an injury like that is at least something, but I’ll watch for any updates/more info.

ArabellaScott · 20/09/2022 09:58

Thanks, I'm sorry but I am avoiding clicking on the link just now. Will maybe look later.
