The bank has teamed up with Channel 4 for a series of 'authentic' TV adverts

Luna, a 30-year-old transgender woman, wants advice on saving for surgery

She details how she is transitioning from male to female but her goal is surgery

I wonder if in the interest of not forgetting the transmen Barclays will also advertise the savings for a mastectomy?

Alternatively, Barclays should advertise savings for penis-enlargement for 'cis' men, I'd love to see an actor saying 'My name is X. I'm a man and I want big cock.'

Sent the link to DH who works for them, I think he's a tad embarrassed Grin

It really is. A great example of how to get free publicity. Fair play to whoever came up with the idea.

And you don't seem to have a good grasp of how negative publicity works.

That part of my post feels like deja vu? I am quite sure we have had at least one discussion in the past about how negative publicity works.

As in, I think you, Hearache have tried before to 'school' me on publicity.

I could be wrong, it may not have been you but I remember you certainly being on a thread where public relations and publicity was mentioned.

Mmmnotsure · 05/09/2022 14:53

Publicity. Could be catchy.

Barclays - the Bank for Big Tits
or
Big Tits bank at Barclays

Helleofabore · 05/09/2022 14:53

What? No statement from you claiming your expertise in publicity then Hearache?

No statement on 'teaching' us?

IcakethereforeIam · 05/09/2022 14:57

"People are terrified if they'll not able to heat their homes or clothe their children this winter. Never mind that though, bank with Barclays - for big tits!"

myeverythink · 05/09/2022 14:58

And you don't seem to have a good grasp of how negative publicity works.

Yet month after month there are post complaing about worldwide brands supporting LGBT+ in their marketing.

It's almost as if it's highly successful for them.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/09/2022 15:05

They all do it, it's pinkwashing and empty sloganeering.

Do they do it in Dubai? Or in any other place where gay rights are genuinely under attack or non-existant. Do they remove their investment from these countries? Campaign there to change the laws? Support gay refugees over here? Does Stonewall?

Genuine questions.

WeeBisom · 05/09/2022 15:06

It's absolutely not true whatsoever that the advert wouldn't be commented on if it was a woman. Really? An ad featuring a young woman, during a cost of living crisis, saying that she wanted 'big tits'? Barclays would be legitimately criticised for promoting unrealistic body expectations: plastic surgery companies have already received a lot of criticism for sponsoring shows like Love Island. And rather than being seen sympathetically, she would probably be regarded to be a vapid air head.

Helleofabore · 05/09/2022 15:08

Really? There has been a bank advertorial before where the male person receiving advice stated clearly they wanted 'big tits'?

Please post up that previous scenario and the results. I look forward to seeing it.

And really? The trans movement wants male transitioners to be seen clearly stating that to be a woman they want 'big tits'?

OK. Let's go with that.

Let's put it on every radio station and every TV channel, and every social media platform, shall we?

Beowulfa · 05/09/2022 15:08

There is no way cosmetic surgery would be used as an example in a financial ad in any other context (boob job for a woman, penis extension for a man, nose job for either male or female). Did they mean to highlight how transwomen are definitely not women I wonder?

Possibly why they went with the “big tits” option?

“Massive cocks bank with Barclays” could be a goer though.

Longdistance · 05/09/2022 15:12

I’ve already complained to ASA hoiks real bosoms up

"This is actually really good case study material for marketing undergrads to study."

It really is. A great example of how to get free publicity. Fair play to whoever came up with the idea.

As I told the other poster.

Why don't you contact Stonewall and Pride and have that particular episode turned in a ad slot featuring the words

'My name is Luna.'

'I'm a transgender woman.'

'And I want big tits.'

then

'For me, I think as a trans woman, I like the idea of feminising my body so I reach the gender that I have, that's inside of me.'

And then at the end finish off with:

'I am currently in working on getting like a new savings account and what I've mainly been doing is taking your advice on how to separate things for apps in terms of giving them titles so I can get like a rest fund and just title it like Boob Fund and I quite like that a lot.'

I have taken these from the transcript of the video. These are all things that Luna has said so there should be no issue. Luna doesn't say much more so it is not twisted in any way. Just the transcript of what they said.

Let's play this ad on every TV/radio/social media platform and see how it goes! You are a member of both Stonewall and Pride, so you are person to get in and get this campaign up and running since you are so fully supportive of it.

I think you are again onto a 'winning strategy' here hearache.

I fully support you doing this in the name of 'gotchaing' FWR posters. Winning!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2022 16:08

Did they mean to highlight how transwomen are definitely not women I wonder?

Whether they meant to or not, they have done.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2022 16:18

It really is. A great example of how to get free publicity.

Barclays Bank isn't a start up craft beer subscription company or an LGBTQ gym, they're an established, serious financial brand with a reputation to lose.

You're welcome.

I know. That and just how misogynistic it is that a male transitioner uses a phrase like that! We could list more and more issues with it.

On so many levels this advertorial is an abject failure.

So, I say. If supporters are so determined to throw their weight behind it, even to start personally attacking other posters, then let Barclays and Stonewall run with it in a publicity drive. Every where.

If all the messaging is spot on in these posters eyes, then Barclays should absolutely team up with Stonewall and let the clips play everywhere.

AND then, there should be a documentary detailing how the advertorial was made and show those involved very proudly supporting their work.

I am not sure why those posters have not accepted the challenge. .....

Helleofabore · 05/09/2022 16:24

Or used the phrase 'expert' that usually comes with these posts....

Maybe there is some self-awareness there of the hypocrisy that is so clear to everyone by now....

Helleofabore · 05/09/2022 16:29

should be

Or used the phrase 'expert' that usually comes with these 'lecturing' posts from Hearache ....

IcakethereforeIam · 05/09/2022 16:39

Reminds me, anyone remember Ratners?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2022 16:42

Yes, all publicity was definitely good publicity there.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/09/2022 16:50

The News of the World?

Helleofabore · 05/09/2022 16:59

I wonder how Oxfam is going after their excellent PR too?

You know.... all publicity is supposedly good publicity and all that...

KittenKong · 05/09/2022 17:04

Which one?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2022 17:07

I've already posted how McCain had to take down their advert with "Bagachipz" because of a reaction to similar objectification of what being a woman means.
