Hooters sponsor children's football team

Here's the most surprising new feminist publication of the 21st century, the Daily Mail, with coverage.

'Notorious bar Hooters has caused outrage after it announced that it was sponsoring a children's under-10s team for the forthcoming season.'

www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-11170151/Hooters-sponsor-local-10s-boys-football-team-enraging-parents-online.html

Weirdly the football team's twitter is all about 'encouraging females into the game', with mentors for girls etc.

If they can see that a female mentor can be a positive role model, what do they consider female staff in sexually provocative clothing?

My flabber is gasted, Arabella.

I am sure that another style of feminist will be applauding this and calling any person who can see the issues with this sponsorship 'haters'.

puffyisgood · 02/09/2022 11:41

it's disgusting. the idea of Hooters is mind bogglingly tasteless. I'd be more or less ok with a restaurant chain called 'hot babes' or something, with similar uniforms and staffing policies, but for the name and logo to be focused purely on tits, in the 21st century, is so far beyond the pale as to be very deeply unfunny.

Plasmodesmata · 02/09/2022 11:49

Ewww.

nauticant · 02/09/2022 12:29

I wonder whether Hooters recruit their staff on the basis of sex or do they now recruit proressively on the basis of gender identity?

WomaninBoots · 02/09/2022 13:02

God I feel old.

I feel like children shouldn't even know somewhere like Hooters exists if at all possible.

ArabellaScott · 02/09/2022 14:29

I'm just wondering how the football club have squared this in their heads. 'Here's a female role model, girls, she works at 'Hooters', which is slang for 'breasts''.

I think the entire concept of Hooters seems old though. It exemplifies the very basic, obvious objectification that I grew up with in the 80s /90s. It's page 3 /lads mags /playboy level shit.

It's not like only fans, where self-identified-as-progressive men can write intellectual pieces on how very empowering it is.

ArabellaScott · 02/09/2022 15:19

Yes, it seems like such old-fashioned sleazy cheese that I'm a bit surprised anyone would actually entertain it these days.

OP posts:
WomaninBoots · 02/09/2022 16:36

Oh yes. Hooters is old fashioned misogyny for sure. I didn't mean the existence of Hooters made me feel old.

What I meant was, that people thinking it is cool to introduce children to strip club culture and holding the performers up as "positive" role models for little girls made me feel old. Because the idea is horrifying to me! So I must be really behind the times.

PermanentTemporary · 02/09/2022 16:48

Yeah, bag o'shite.

Is it real though or just 'somebody said this might happen'?

Might as well have the John Player Special Under 12s League.

Janesmom · 02/09/2022 20:58

Haha. Wouldn’t bother me at all. It’s just a restaurant. If anything, great to see them supporting a local team.

WomaninBoots · 02/09/2022 21:01

Just a restaurant that reduces women to a pair of comedy breasts in its very name.

Yeah nothing wrong with getting children involved with that.

Eh? It has boobs in its logo so that “reduces women to a pair of breast”? Okay then…

WomaninBoots · 02/09/2022 22:38

Erm. Yes. Do you think the clientele are interested in the young women who serve them food and beverages as whole, complex and interesting human beings with a full range of thoughts and emotions? Or do you think perhaps they are more concerned about their tits and the woman attached to them is kind of an inconvenience?

I suspect the latter.

It's called Hooters FFS.

Yes, that's exactly what it does.

Food is served exclusively by women wearing very low cut tops, push up bras and ultra short skirts. I mean, how very empowering.

Just read on the BBC website that the FA have stopped this sponsorship from happening.

Thelnebriati · 03/09/2022 12:38

''Elaine Oram, senior safeguarding lead for Nottinghamshire FA, told the BBC a letter had been sent to Burton Joyce FC telling them "they need to cease the sponsorship deal".
In a statement, Nottinghamshire FA said: "The County FA had not been approached by the club seeking sanction for the sponsorship and had we have been, the request would have been declined in accordance with FA rules appertaining to the Kit and Advertising Regulations.
"From being made aware of the sponsorship we have been working with the club to reinforce their understanding of the regulations surrounding such sponsorship.''

WomaninBoots · 03/09/2022 14:38

That's good to know. Someone, somewhere still has at least some sense.

TipTopHat · 03/09/2022 14:50

I'm surprised they were allowed to have them as a sponsor. My son's under 10 team weren't allowed to be sponsored by a national hotel chain as they own restaurants which serve alcohol! our local branch of the FA wouldn't allow it.

Believerinbiology · 03/09/2022 16:29

From thread in AIBU...the FA have stepped in and said it's not allowed. Cynical me thinks club and Hooters knew this all along. Both have got way more publicity than they would have done if partnership was more appropriate.

ArabellaScott · 03/09/2022 20:25

Well, I'm glad to hear it's been stopped.

Lol, it's all trans all the time.

Hooters is a much beloved American Breastaurant that I choose not to patronize because I believe that it objectifies women. And you can get wings anywhere. But progressive it is not. I suppose it may have hired a trans person or maybe some of its waitstaff identify as non binary or whatever but it's very problematic for reasons that have nothing to do with trans ideology and a lot to do with more traditional ideas about what an adult human female is and what our role is.

Is it even possible to have any discussions on a so called feminist board about things that involve women without it being redirected to trans issues?

PomegranateOfPersephone · 03/09/2022 23:03

Try Feminist Chat if Sex and Gender isn’t your thing. Many who frequent the sex and gender board perceive gender identity ideology to be the biggest current threat to women’s rights and child safeguarding so don’t be surprised if it comes up on many threads on this board relating to diverse issues.

The quote you quoted was most likely a pithy remark pointing out that Hooters most certainly knows what a woman is when it comes to objectifying women on the basis of sex. I don’t see TRAs protesting their local Hooters demanding transwomen be allowed to flaunt their chests there. It’s another example of the sexism of the movement.

And this discussion is right where it should be, because it’s a demonstration of the deliberate erosion of boundaries around sex, and exposing young children to the idea of sex, which is a tenet of Queer Theory underpinning much of what we see here.

Maybe it would be better to rename this forum simply Sex and Gender and drop the "Feminism" bit altogether if all issues related to feminism must be viewed through a gender ideology lens.

Anyway, I wasn't the one who placed this topic here. I'm just wondering why a thread about a chain restaurant whose business model is as far away from progressive, woke, trans etc stuff as you can get has to be redirected to the trans debate. Can there be no discussion of regular old fashioned misogyny?
