β€œLadies Lavatories”
Not β€œBathrooms” or β€œRest Rooms”.
You’d think U.K. universities could use non-euphemistic English English.

Other even nicer American euphemisms are, β€œThe Little Girls’ Room” or β€œThe Powder Room”. This last is rather lovely because it also denotes a haven for women and girls to do their hair, make-up etc. as well as use the lavatories. It might be pink or pale blue with a carpet, and have scent bottles with those little puffer sprays attached, boxes of tissues and balls of cotton wool in bowls.

These signs read like painful parodies…but more painful is the fact that they’re not. Honestly, they make me 🀬

FrancescaContini · 23/08/2022 16:23

Also won’t be allowing my DC to go to captured universities.

That "they know better than you" US imported arsewash has been doing the rounds since even before I first peaked circa 2014 or thereabouts.

I was telling DP exactly that last night, as it has apparently gone viral outside of TRA/GC spaces and he mentioned it was on a big Reddit sub (with many many deleted posts!), because seeing it contributed to my peakening back then.

Yup, it was one of the many things that set me off on a journey to find out what "they" knew better and I didn't. Interesting that it's having a moment again and is getting a wider audience.

I was so sure I had to be missing something that would explain genderism, something possibly scientific that I wasn't smart enough to know about...so I read, and I read, and I read some more and I "educated myself" as we are always told to do and I realised that it was arsewash. All of it.

After that the struggle was (and still sometimes is) with female socialisation & "be kind".

Now I read that gaslighting demand to obey and defer to the overlords and see it for exactly what it is. And I will not comply.

INTJ · 23/08/2022 19:06

You should be concerned to find a TW in there, transwomen have been known to masturbate and indecently expose themselves in ladies loos and there's at least one incident involving an attempted rape of a little girl in a ladies loo.

This is epic gaslighting. If they weren't a threat you'd be seeing the activists waving research around to show it was safe. You'll notice there's no cases of transwomen being sexually assaulted in the gents as a reason for them to use the ladies either.

Just endanger yourself so these guys can feel validated.

OriginalUsername2 · 23/08/2022 19:16

So fucking patronising.

I said to someone after they gave me a long monologue about how bad things are for trans people and the hate they get for using toilets that feel right to them (they don’t know any but follow them on YouTube) :

β€œWhat about women who’ve experienced rape and domestic violence? Shouldn’t they feel safe?

”Yeah but we can’t go around making everything safe for everyone, that’s not how the world works!”

I started feeling SO angry at the ridiculousness that I had to check out of the conversation and go somewhere else to blow some air out of my mouth and shake it off.

This makes me furious. It was realising that women have every right to contest this bullshit that took me over the mountain. This is not fair. "They know better than you", put up and shut up? No.

I second this to the nth degree! I would not feel comfortable with a huge bloke in the toilet next to me. We are told to respect others rights and feelings, but what about our own?! I send my daughter in by herself to the loo at age 7 (she likes to feel independent) so do I trust that some one with alternative intentions (i.e not a transgender individual) won’t harm her?

The powder room description sounds like a magnet for the sort of tw who believes in pyjama parties , pillow fights and girls nights in!

While I don't agree with this entirely, this was the big square I had to circle when starting to really properly think about this issue. Many, maybe even most trans people will 'just want to pee' and I sympathise.

But it doesn't take long online to find proof of a very openly (sexually) aggressive type of person who will indeed share pictures of themselves in a space they consider themselves entitled to be in. Who will say they will harm anyone who believes they shouldn't be in there. Who goes in there to parade an erection. And that is horrific.

Women don't do that. And women should have every right to say no to this. Not be told that someone else "knows better than us" at that juncture.

INTJ · 23/08/2022 23:23

I dug through the incarceration stats for sex offending for transwomen, in the UK it actually appears slightly worse than male average.

They made up 0.2% of the population at the time, about 0.38% of the incarcerated sex offenders for the 2017 figures I got. Not including possible TW remand prisoners.

About 1/3 of men have committed some kind of sexual assault (college age male polls). So bear in mind this is probably true of transwomen, and likely worse because the prison stats show a higher rate.

If this was about peeing they'd have been agitating for more gender neutral third options, and virtually everyone would have backed it from the start.

It was always about access to women only spaces.

Celia24 · 23/08/2022 23:29

I've been on several.toilets where these are taped to the door. And yes, they make me rage every time...

ninetynineAu · 24/08/2022 11:27

Why don't they just be honest and have the signs read "Mixed sex"?
For the exact same reason many of us would prefer they did; We'd see the sign, turn heel and go elsewhere.

They know full bloody well that allowed choice, the vast majority of women and girls will refuse to use public toilets if there's risk of men walking in on us or following us in, already being there, or having been there previously to set up cameras or drop a massive 40minute morning man-poo .

LateSummerLobelia · 24/08/2022 11:45

Okay for what it is worth I am going to shoehorn in an anecdote that happened this past weekend.

DH and I belong to a sports club that has a clubhouse. last weekend we had an event and a bbq in the courtyard garden. The male toilets are on the ground floor adjacent to the garden. The female toilets are on the second level.

It was so so so busy. The bar staff were run off their feet and apparently at one point the manager running the staff told the female staff members to just use the male loos on the ground floor if required, and if the toilets were vacant, because it would 'take too long' for them to abandon their stations and run up 2 flights of stairs.

Well, the inevitable happened and male members of the club were using the toilets when they realised female staff were coming in. The shit hit the fucking fan and the men were up in arms about the violation of their space. (And rightly so).

Never mind the whole HR issue going on, there is a bloody emergency committee meeting tomorrow night because men felt violated. No-one- but no-one is questioning their right to feel violated. Least of all me. Which is fair enough. Everyone understands that this was a fairly major error.

I'm not even going to ask about why the same reaction does not take place in support of biological women who feel upset and violated and unsettled by biological men demanding a right to their spaces. Because at the end of the day it is apparent that the misogynists just do not give a flying fuck about women. They only care about fucking women over.

Bitebite · 24/08/2022 12:51

It would be interesting Lobelia, after the dust has settled, to test those male club members' reaction to a transwoman invading the ladies loos. I wonder if they would have more empathy, or would even conflate the two experiences? Maybe we all need to invade men's loos en masse, get them fired up and then recruit them to the cause? Wishful thinking I expect.

On the subject of loos/bathrooms etc. does anyone know of any research looking at women's attitudes to safe spaces? My hypothesis (based on an n of 1, myself) is that women who have been the victim of rape are more likely to feel unsafe if a man enters a women-only space. I'd quite like that hypothesis to be proved somewhere, because I may well use it if (inevitably, when) my place of work puts up these types of signs.

I've seen two things evidenced:

  1. wailing that (exactly as you say) if females are allowed to have female only facilities all the females will want to use them and TW will have no females in the mixed sex women's toilets. Despite many females saying they are fine with it and it supposedly being about 'just wanting to pee' as opposed to preventing any females peeing in a female only space male people can't go into

  2. India Willoughby recently tweeted on a thread of TW talking about a UK airport. One of the main women's toilets had been made 'accessible' (mixed sex) with a notice that a female only facility was on another floor (for the females excluded from the mixed sex provision by males being in there.) The TW were tee heeing about how on principle they walked all the way to the female only toilet and used it. Which is really blatant male peeing on territory to make damn sure that any attempt to meet female inclusion needs as well as TW needs will be literally pissed all over by TW.

Any sympathy I had for anyone but females in this is long since gone.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 24/08/2022 19:45

Why don't they just be honest and have the signs read "Mixed sex"?

I've never understood if a company is so open-minded that they don't want to provide single sex facilities, they don't want to advertise the fact?

I also don't understand how companies get away with advertising facilities falsely, and needlessly so.

bakewellbride · 24/08/2022 19:59

What a load of outrageous shit! The person who produced those bathroom signs needs 'protecting from harm'.

bakewellbride · 24/08/2022 20:03

@JustWaking awesome!

bakewellbride · 24/08/2022 20:07

This stuff particularly enrages me as I am an abuse survivor and in 2012 I literally couldn't be around men at all. I spent lots of time at home as outside i could have severe panic attacks. If I saw a man I had to hold a stone that my therapist gave me and practise techniques to stay calm and control my breathing. It was just absolutely awful and debilitating. With a lot of therapy I recovered and turned my life around but surely there are of course women who struggle today and this bullshit will make life so hard for them. It's not fair.
