Times article I've just seen...

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/tavistock-gender-clinic-to-be-sued-by-1-000-families-lbsw6k8zd

I'm afraid I don't have access but the headline alone...

I'm assuming it's for overly enthusiastic affirmative care and not the opposite?

I can't believe this is finally starting at last and I hope it bankrupts the NHS.

Vindication for all of us who have been saying this would happen for years.

Wow, this is a ridiculous and spiteful thing to say.

AlisonDonut · 11/08/2022 09:18

It is a chicken and egg situation - I mean one person suing opens the floodgates and it was always going to take one legal team willing to take on a class action and be up against the thrashing about, threats and doxxing that will now occur to all their staff and families.

They have hopefully protected themselves against this before announcing this action.

RoyalCorgi · 11/08/2022 09:23

I'd be very surprised if we don't see a certain illustrious, brave man on the birthday honours list next year.

Much as I'd love to see this, Graham is Irish so not technically eligible.

But he will have the satisfaction of being completely vindicated.

Bedazzle · 11/08/2022 09:28

Maybe the law firm launching this claim could use him as a front man for the media and publicity to help draw in more families, his profile is certainly big enough to get him on BBC Breakfast, Good Morning Britain and This Morning etc.

crowdedout · 11/08/2022 09:31

Good. I hope they win.

What a ridiculous thing to say. For all its problems we are very lucky to have the NHS and most people in the U.K. don't realise how lucky.

A mother in the USA whose 12 year old daughter had a terrible head injury falling off her bike was outraged to be charged for the extra time her daughter was kept ventilated in ICU until it was time for her to be removed for organ donation. To add insult to injury the insurance company expressed no sympathy in her dealings with it, not so much as a "sorry for your loss", just "that's the bill and you owe us" (or something along those lines, I paraphrase).

Anyway, I dread to think what the Shrewsbury scandal is going to cost in compensation, with many damaged babies needing care for life as well as the women and babies who actually died. I imagine the costs of the Tavistock scandal will be much less than Shrewsbury.

The tide may be turning, but I feel so let down.

Let down by the NHS, not just the Tavi, but the language, rainbow lanyards, single gender wards etc, rather than focus on their core role.

Let down by the BBC, who should have been doing their job and reporting this properly from the outset.

Let down by M&S, John Lewis and just about every other business that jumped on the rainbow bandwagon.

Let down by the Labour Party, the Greens, the Lib Dems who should have been doing their job as opposition parties.

Let down by the educational establishment whose role is to educate not indoctrinate.

And, and, and.

I think we'll being seeing an end to that pretty sharpish after this news today.

I don't think I've had enough coffee yet to deal with the cognitive dissonance it takes to try to second guess what they may do there.

That's interesting bedazzle.
You think the reaction will be that's swift?

What do people think about the effect of this on schools and how they approach the issue in lessons and general school culture?

WandaWomblesaurus · 11/08/2022 09:43

The new TRA position will be

a) It's Mumsnet's fault that children will die because of the Tavi closing down

b) it's not 1000 it's only 5

c) JKR is a mean lady

d) This is good because detransitioners are part of the LGBTQD and something something something new flag

e) NEW FLAGS!!!!!

Ffs, you couldn't make it up. I feel like we're trapped in a horrible alternate reality.

Penguintears · 11/08/2022 09:48

I wish John Grisham would write a novel based on a trans class action. Lots of scope for corruption by TRAs in the judiciary (Edward Lord), violent TR activism and the good guys being gaslit by large organisations (NHS) and companies (big pharma). It has all the elements of a David and Goliath- type Grisham plot.

Penguintears · 11/08/2022 09:49

By the way I'm not saying that Edward Lord is corrupt - just using the example of a TRA such as him being part of the judiciary.

Igmum · 11/08/2022 09:52

This was inevitable.

I'm delighted in one way because it will protect vulnerable kids. What the Tavistock was doing was beyond vile and those poor children have had their lives ruined.

Of course it won't be 1,000. Will they proceed with 10 in the hope of future business?

There are others I'd like to see them go after more, GenderGP and Mermaids spring to mind, but those would be a much tougher opponent. The NHS clearly owes a duty of care and should have provided a much better service, it also needs to urgently invest in mental health care because at the moment that part of the service is on its knees.

So qualified optimism here. This should help the Cass Review substantially revise treatment and that is good news for our troubled children.

Not sure about corrupt but, at a minimum, I would question his/her/their ability to judge impartially. I have no problem with EL throwing the book at employers who have treated trans employees badly, and would expect any ET judge to do that, but deliberately trying to muscle in on cases brought by GCs? Absolutely inappropriate.

Text:

The Tavistock gender clinic is facing mass legal action from youngsters who claim they were rushed into taking life-altering puberty blockers.

Lawyers expect about 1,000 families to join a medical negligence lawsuit alleging vulnerable children have been misdiagnosed and placed on a damaging medical pathway.

They are accusing the gender identity development service [GIDS] at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust of multiple failures in its duty of care.

This includes allegations it recklessly prescribed puberty blockers with harmful side effects and adopted an “unquestioning, affirmative approach” to children identifying as transgender.

Wow.

Watching with optimistic interest ...

GatherlyGal · 11/08/2022 09:59

This is such amazing news. And great publicity for the law firm which will bring more claimants out of the woodwork I bet.

we have just been discharged from the Tavi as DD is 18 and Keira Bell changed our lives. The amazing timing of her case meant that in the small window DD could have had blockers they were not available. Without that we were on an express train towards that despite me and DH being very opposed. we had held off through 2 or 3 appointments but pressure was mounting and then the verdict came just in time.

It is hard to express what it's like as a parent with your kid's every word about their self-diagnosis, desire for blockers and surgery being nodded through as 100% fact.

I can well believe there are 1000 parents who were not so lucky as us.

Incredibly DD is already grateful we put the brakes on. She still talks about medical transition "in a few years" but I believe it's less and less likely as time goes on.

My heart breaks for those caught up in this. The more I read and learn the more obvious it is that blockers are just evil life limiting and dangerous.

Whatever my kid does now she has a fully developed body at least and has got through what I believe is the hardest part of puberty / adolescence intact.

MoltenLasagne · 11/08/2022 10:00

I've been waiting for this day since I read the handling guidelines for lupron which has been sold to these kids and their parents as a wonder drug that magically stops puberty whilst being fully reversible. Does this read like the guidelines for something harmless?

In the event of a LEAK or SPILL of Lupron “the procedure to be followed is to Evacuate Area", and personal precautions are to “wear respirator, chemical safety goggles, rubber boots, and heavy rubber gloves.”

Leuprolide can pass into body fluids (urine, feces, vomit). For at least 48 hours after you receive a dose, avoid allowing your body fluids to come into contact with your hands or other surfaces. Caregivers should wear rubber gloves while cleaning up a patient's body fluids, handling contaminated trash or laundry or changing diapers. Wash hands before and after removing gloves. Wash soiled clothing and linens separately from other laundry."

I hope Webberley and Harrop get sued too.

guinnessguzzler · 11/08/2022 10:12

@Needmoresleep 100%. I know so many well meaning supposedly thoughtful people who have just jumped on this without any reflection whatsoever, no consideration of consequences or impact, just desperate to 'be kind' and 'on the right side of history'. The damage at a societal level is huge. I feel awful for all the children and families impacted by the poor standard of care they received and just hope this will be a wake up call that actually much of this needs further research, thought and discussion. For a great many people it is a symptom, not a cause.

BeenHereAWhileNow · 11/08/2022 10:23

Just a reminder to everyone who wants to see Mermaids brought to account that there is an opportunity in the case they are bringing against LGB Alliance. Mermaids have received a lot of funds from trans rights activists. If LGB Alliance don’t put up a good fight this could undermine some of the recent gains so it’s another important case.

LGB Alliance’s plot still needs a lot more gardening

southbiscay · 11/08/2022 10:26

I was very sceptical of the '1000' headline too. If if turns out to be 'only' 500 it will be a stick for the TRAs to beat us with.

Goodhead on Sky said 'hundreds'.

It would have been better to say 100 and get 500, but they are experienced class action lawyers so what do I know.

Perhaps there are numerous families who would never have gone the Keira Bell route but who will be ok with making a submission to a class action?

And I doubt this Times article is the first the Tavistock or possibly even Cass knew about this impending action.

Patients will know other patients. Numerous private conversations will have been had.

And we know that puberty blockers and cross sex hormones and surgery have so many side effects that many kids will have come to a private realisation that the picture painted by the trans you tube influencers wasn't the whole picture.

A class action could be the golden bridge needed to allow individuals to retreat.

ScreechingEchoChamber · 11/08/2022 10:31

Well, sunlight is a good thing.

What we really need is an enquiry - not just into GIDS but all the way up, into how the fuck the NHS has ended up in the position it is willing to approve treatment for a poorly defined 'non medical' condition with unevidenced methods.

ASK ABOUT WPATH.
