Tavistock clinic to be sued by 1000 families

Times article I've just seen...

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/tavistock-gender-clinic-to-be-sued-by-1-000-families-lbsw6k8zd

I'm afraid I don't have access but the headline alone...

I'm assuming it's for overly enthusiastic affirmative care and not the opposite?

Surely Hat Trick Productions are going to see this today and reverse ferret immediately - we'll be seeing the Father Ted musical in the West End by Christmas.

I'd be very surprised if we don't see a certain illustrious, brave man on the birthday honours list next year.

Vindication indeed.

Part of TullipR's claim is that he felt pushed into agreeing to the drugs to get continued attention.

It was being pushed into the surgery.

He was so desperate due to long waiting lists and extremely poor mh (was diagnosed with OCD) that he took online advice to get a private diagnosis so he could access the PBS on the nhs. These made him more mentally unwell. Psychotic. He wasn't given oestrogen for some time (and apparently should have been.)

He then was making some headway in therapy but was told he'd loose it if he didn't go down the surgery route.

He also disclosed in therapy immediately after the operation that he thought it was a monumental mistake. He was told it was the after effects of the anaesthesia as well as his diagnosis of OCD. They used his mh condition against him.

No one considered that his ocd was what led him to seek transition in the first place.

Apparently being privately diagnosed meant he got pushed up the waiting lists. I don't know if it was that that gave him access to therapy too or not.

This SO needs to happen. And happen with big headlines.

higherthanthesun · 11/08/2022 08:12

at least 1 in 19 patients desist and regret so strongly that they object to how they were affirmed

This sounds like a very low number to me, no doubt it will rise substantially over the next few months as more families come forward due to the glorious sunlight pouring in.

He's certainly in that "vindication indeed" mood for himself and us in a couple-of-minutes audio clip he posted last night. (Subcribers only).

Although again, maybe a bit too carried away by the "1,000" headline number.

WarriorN · 11/08/2022 08:13

I do know that, speaking to a desisted woman some time ago (Thomasin) there's some level of gatekeeping in the children services but absolutely none in the adult services. The willingness to agree to transition when she moved into the adult service was actually what helped her start to question her ideas.

This is sunlight. I hope the case wins and the rest of the country, indeed the rest of the world takes note.

Needmoresleep · 11/08/2022 08:20

I think the law firm is American.

A win here should give them useful business there.

Clymene · 11/08/2022 08:20

While there are a lot of parents who were pushing to get their children onto blockers, there were a lot who weren't and who were horrified at their inability to control what happened to their children. I don't know how many parents are in the Bayswater Support group or in some of the other groups on Twitter.

Even if it's only 100 families, that's 100 families who have been unable to stop the NHS irreparably damaging their children

nauticant · 11/08/2022 08:24

I'm also skeptical about the 1,000 number. I suspect that someone has said "let's assume that 5% will be motivated enough to make a claim, the Tavistock treated 19,000 children with gender dysphoria, so that would be about 1,000 claimants".

Goodhead is a British barrister (Oxford PPE, then law), Pogust is a US class action lawyer. Offices in London, Edinburgh, Netherlands, US and Brazil.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 11/08/2022 08:35

I wonder if the NHS lawyers will want and try to settle early on when they see the final Cass report.

lechiffre55 · 11/08/2022 08:35

Who exactly is getting sued GIDS, the NHS? and I know this sounds like a stupid question but will they even defend against the suit, or just agree?
GIDS is being shut down as being unsafe for kids. The Cass report acknowledges that GIDS is a disaster. Is there any point fighting the lawsuits from the kids? It will just waste more money on lawyers. In my opinion almost better to go "yep we owe you money" and just sit down together and work out how much. Less money wasted on fighting it.
The shame of it is the money will be our money as taxpayers not the ones responsible. I really want to see some accountability and reckoning for those who made all this happen. It looks like money will be taken off the NHS.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 11/08/2022 08:40

It’ll be the particular NHS Trust getting sued, I presume.

Thefruitbatdancer · 11/08/2022 08:44

Well we all knew this was coming, I'm angry that nobody in the NHS could see it coming. How long before the tables turn on Mermaids publicly? Mermaids is currently trying to force the Charity commission to strip the LGB Alliance of its charity status.

EdithStourton · 11/08/2022 08:48

Vindication for all of us who have been saying this would happen for years.
Indeed. It's tragic for the children/young people and families involved, but let's hope that this helps to put the brakes on.

MaryBlighthouse · 11/08/2022 08:49

At that moment that article sounds like lawyers advertising for clients ( and hence business) rather than being a family led action.

MalagaNights · 11/08/2022 08:51

I'm actually feeling physically relieved about the events of the past week.
Like insanity is lifting and what's been done is finally being recognised.

I know there's a long way to go as this ideological capture goes deep but at last it's clearly out there and exposed.

I hope this law suit will lead to many more in the USA and it becomes the scandal of the decade.
That will end it.

LewisLittUp · 11/08/2022 08:57

Do we think the TRAs will still be spouting the "Tavistock was closed because they couldn't service the growing number of patients?" bullshit still?

Blackopal · 11/08/2022 09:00

Been watching this car crash for years.
Absolute horror as the health care system based on 'first do no harm' became the system that twists words and science and results in irreparable damage to vulnerable.

Shame on them.

So sad for these children. This is a scandal.

I'm so glad the case is happening, I'm so sorry it even exists.

xalo · 11/08/2022 09:00

@MalagaNights
I feel exactly the same!

I see the TRAs are already trying to tear the law firm to bits, calling them 'ambulance chasers' and besmirching their name because they are responsible for the "Have you owned a diesel vehicle in the last 15 years?" adverts you see popping up on social media all the time.

Blackopal · 11/08/2022 09:09

Nor surprised by that lovelass.
If I worked at the law firm I would be making sure all of my online security was tight etc.
The law firm and its staff will be targets to try and distract from the issue in hand.

The 1 star google reviews will no doubt be incoming today en masse.
