Suella Braverman expected to make a speech on Wednesday

In which she will say (in advance of DfE guidance to be issued in September - apparently) that schools are not legally obligated to facilitate childhood transition through the use of opposite sex or neo-pronouns (non-binary etc), allowing children to use the toilets of the opposite sex (arrangements should be made for children to use a third space if needed), or the uniform of the opposite sex.

For some reason this has provoked an outpouring of accusations of Suella being ‘as thick as mince’. One charming person wished her dead. Someone else said we ‘don’t get to’ disagree with Suella on other things and then agree with her on this. Erm...

Anyway, this seems like a return to much-needed ordinary safeguarding practices to me.

I don’t care if boys wear skirts particularly. I do care about my daughters being bullied to pretend they are female.

This bit of the transcript stood out for me:

"[If] the benefit that it [women's only spaces] confers is sufficient to justify direct discrimination against a whole class of men, it will in almost all circumstances, be sufficient to justify indirect discrimination against a much smaller class of trans women"

Beautifully put.

TeenDivided · 10/08/2022 15:41

Another thanks for the transcript.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/08/2022 15:41

a right not to suffer discrimination on grounds of gender reassignment is not the same thing as a right of access to facilities provided for the opposite sex.

Exactly. And Stonewall and mermaids etc have tried to disguise that fact.

Yes, another fundamental point that needed to be completely spelled out.

Seriously MNHQ? Again? Are links to Policy Exchange automatically hidden?

Wonderful speech!

picklemewalnuts · 10/08/2022 16:07

Some excellent sections in that speech. So carefully written. Well done that woman!

Cismyfatarse · 10/08/2022 16:11

Anyone able to say what this is likely to mean for schools in Scotland? Education is devolved, as is Health; however, the Equality Act is in force here.

VestofAbsurdity · 10/08/2022 16:11

Apparently in the comments on the YouTube video Mimmy Mum is saying that Suella Braverman QC, Attorney General, is wrong about the law.

StonewallsPyrrhicvictory · 10/08/2022 16:12

Cracking speech

StonewallsPyrrhicvictory · 10/08/2022 16:12

Loving the shout outs to Stonewall.

Loving the shout outs to Stonewall.

And to Maya Forstater, both in the speech, and when replying to a question from her:

Firstly, let me put on record again, my thanks for the work that you've done, and also for your resilience in fighting against this problem that we are seeing pervade our institutions and our organisations.

The headlights are being shone firmly and unwaveringly on Stonewall now.

Exactly. Especially as membership to that smaller class of men can be solely dependent on saying three magic words.

We all know how much of a legal expert she is.

What do these people think the single sex exceptions actually are? And you can't be in the process of 'gender reassignment' if you're a child.

And apart from anything else, there is little benefit trying to achieve a gotcha over points of law when you're talking to the people who make them.

And can repeal them.

UWhatNow · 10/08/2022 16:31

I’m not counting any chickens on this one but so glad to hear this scary bullshit being so firmly called out by someone of her status.

VestofAbsurdity · 10/08/2022 16:32

I know @Ereshkigalangcleg and @Datun , never ceases to amaze me just how stupid some people want to make themselves look, the case they lost being a prime example.

happydappy2 · 10/08/2022 16:32

Where does this leave male adults who are teachers & have ‘transitioned’ Will the kids be expected to deny reality and call them Miss/Mrs? Will these male adult teachers accept they cannot waltz into the ladies loos?

tricervixtops · 10/08/2022 16:34

I am wondering this too @Cismyfatarse.
Equality Act should protect kids in Scotland too. I'm not sure ScotGov is listening though.

ChristinaXYZ · 10/08/2022 16:36

There's nothing on the teachers' newspaper, the TES, yet, either on the twitter feed or the home page. I do hope someone remembers to tell teachers! I know there may be mailings out but they (schools) get so much stuff will it arrive with the appropriate sense of urgency if it is not covered in the news? Will the first woke staff member bury it in the slush pile?

The BBC are not covering Suella Braverman's speech yet either -even on their education pages. It is not like they have not had notice what with all the pre-speech releases and the article in the Telegraph. How many teachers read the Telegraph I wonder.

If you want to look.

What would be good would be if Safe Schools Alliance would do a naming and shaming page of those schools not following the guidance. It would put pressure on the authorities to intervene.

Rightsraptor · 10/08/2022 16:38

How has MimmyMum got such bare-faced cheek to contradict the AG?

ChristinaXYZ · 10/08/2022 16:38

Actually Ofsted are not yet covering it either.
