I live a few miles from where these terrible “hate crimes” are supposedly happening. I can’t see anything untrue about the slogans, btw.

Has anyone ever known a documented case of razors under stickers?

All the stickers shown are on curved surfaces, so how would that even work?

There’s quite a ratio in the comments.

Trying to pretend that trans activism is not left-led is not tenable.

Eh?

LK1972 · 06/08/2022 16:03

@StillHappy I think the transactivists managed to successfully forced team themselves with the gay rights movement, which is historically more associated with the left.

However, it was the left-wing women who initially noticed this (as it was becoming the only acceptable left-wing view) and pushed back, at least in this country.

For daring to speak out they lost their platforms in the left-wing media and were forced to write for traditionally centrist or right-wing press.

@cariadlet
Why on earth should you be surprised at seeing a feminist sticker in a ‘Tory dominated ‘ place? Virtually all the TRA are Green, Lib/dem and Labour apparatchiks. Most of the push back is coming from Tories, just as in thé US, red states are trying to limit the ‘trans a child without informing the parents’ cult. United we stand….

I've done a couple of stalls in my town and wasn't surprised by the supportive comments we received.

However, many of them were from people with whom I agreed about the importance of single sex spaces and men not being allowed to take part in women's sports but with whom I disagreed on other issues eg a number were religious and conflated sexuality and gender identity (not surprising as the trans mob have conflated the 2 things) and some of those people were unhappy about gay rights.

Many Conservatives are unhappy with trans ideology but that doesn't automatically make them feminists.

I'm in the WRN and happy to put aside political differences when dealing with this issue but that doesn't mean that the differences go away or aren't important.

Stickering and other forms of direct action aren't common here so it's quite reasonable for my new friend to be surprised to see the one that I'd put up. It was an anti-Stonewall sticker and as a lesbian, she had found it particularly supportive.

Sewell Ward is in Norwich North, which has a Tory MP, Chloe Smith.

But Sewell has been Labour for the 20+ years I’ve lived nearby, until the Greens took the council seat a few months ago.

Magdalen Street is in Clive Lewis’s constituency. He’s Labour. It’s the poorer side of the city but is being promoted as the new Shoreditch.

If the left abandons women, is it surprising women abandon the left?

(collective) You may have been left wing in the past but those days are obviously long behind you now.

Being left wing is about preferring certain economic and social policies. It has nothing to do with reading (or not reading) certain newspapers. The best way to stay informed is to read a wide variety of news sources and form your own opinions.

"Green Party city councillor Alex Catt, who represents the Sewell ward, said that the transphobic messages could "easily spiral in to something much more than stickers".

Like the protection of female-only spaces? Heavens above.

I too fear it will spiral, next thing will be ribbons and before you know it it’ll be yarn bombing- I mean that’s one step away from Armageddon isn’t it?

WeeBisom · 06/08/2022 16:52

There is nothing transphobic about these stickers. They are simply expressions of gender critical beliefs. "Puberty is not a medical condition." What is hateful or transphobic about that? It's true! "Humans cannot change sex", again, perfectly true. The councillor says that people need to think about the vulnerable minority they are 'targeting', but does not stop to consider that maybe the stickers aren't targeting anyone but are there to give gender critical feminists a bit of a boost.

WolverineBluey · 06/08/2022 17:31

Worthless reporting - either completely ignorant, or done with an agenda (or both). Does not even include in the story what is actually printed on the stickers, or bother to explain what is supposed to be so hateful about them. (Birdy Rose's, are they?)

And swallowing a well-known urban myth hook, line and sinker like this is even more stupid. Razor blades behind stickers? I don't even believe it when I see it connected to ultra far right nonsense anymore thanks to this sort of thing.

EdithStourton · 06/08/2022 18:09

All I've read in FWR (politics) for the last 12 months is how Boris knows "what a woman is" and how posters have no choice but to vote Conservative, every other article is a link to the Daily Mail.
Either you have not been paying attention, or you're lying. Take your pick, but neither is a good look.

As for local papers, an awful lot of the 'journalists' are fresh out of uni and 100% ignorant of the patch they are meant to cover. One turned up at a council meeting and asked, 'What river?' of the large body of water a few hundred yards away. That was about a decade ago, and now they're obviously being turned out not only clueless but also imbued with the latest trendy ideology.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ratio in the comments.

BlackForestCake · 06/08/2022 18:34

I remember hearing the story about razor blades under stickers 30 years ago, when it was supposedly the National Front who were doing it.

I believed it at the time, although I never saw one, but I’m now questioning whether it was even true then.

If you are taking down stickers, a coin or something is much better than trying to do it with your fingers anyway, as well as protecting you from hypothetical razor blades.

GCBookseller · 06/08/2022 23:40

cariadlet · 06/08/2022 15:20

I think stickers can have a positive effect on other women.

I met somebody a few months ago who is GC. She'd recently moved to my town and had spotted one of my stickers when out dog walking.
This is a very small, Tory dominated place so she was very surprised to see the sticker and said that it made her feel that she wasn't alone.

It made my day tbh, we don’t get much around here apart from ‘Vote Yes!’ (in some mythical Welsh referendum) stickers 🙄

For those trying to say that gender critical women are right wing … I don’t see that. Maybe a minority are, but I’d say mostly centre-left wing? Which - when you compare it to the extremist Through The Looking Glass Batshit leftists - well, anything more sane than that is going to appear right wing. That doesn’t mean it is right wing.

Advanced Search is plainly doing theupsidedowncake no favours as it's showing no engagement or involvement prior to this thread.

I'm always uncertain whether it's groundless self-confidence or questionable ethics that emboldens seemingly new posters to issue the equivalent of their personal papal bulls on issues for which they're demonstrating negligible familiarity or actual knowledge.

BlackForestCake · 07/08/2022 00:49

It really just shows up the ignorance of the trans activists.

My position is the same as the position of Engels, as put forward in “The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State”. He describes women’s oppression as rooted in the desire of men to control inheritance of property, hence the fertility and sexuality of women had to be controlled.

This position has been the basis of socialist and feminist thinking for 150 years. But it is completely incompatible with mystical theories that say being a woman is independent of biology.

Go on, tell us that Engels was right wing. That's if you know who he was, of course.

cariadlet · 07/08/2022 01:19

@BlackBlackForestCake That's really interesting. I didn't know that Engels had written about women's oppression.

TBF, I did find stickers were a gateway drug to ribbons. He wouldn’t like the ribbons.

It really is tiresome that anything other than full fat TWAW must mean you support some sort of trans holocaust.

DdraigGoch · 07/08/2022 02:08

StillHappy · 06/08/2022 15:55

I think Tory-dominated places are more likely to have GC stickers than pro-TRA ones.

I think that Tory-dominated places are more likely to have no stickers at all. Partly because the feminists doing the stickering tended to vote for left wing parties in the past, and partly because Tory councils are less likely to be run by TRAs in the first place.

ScrollingLeaves · 07/08/2022 07:46

I urge those pasting the offensive stickers to think about the people they are targeting. Trans and non-binary people are some of the most marginalised communities in the country.

There we go. Out came that line predictably enough about “…..some of the most marginalised…..”:

See the video in particular in this article from The Critic:

Birdy has complained to the paper and accused them of defamation. All power to her.

Engels is as notoriously rightwing as Tommy Sheridan.
