Can't even get worked up about this!

It's oddballs hopping around on broomsticks wanting to make a serious political point out if it!

Sorry, but the pettiness is pretty hilarious!

Rightsraptor · 22/07/2022 08:17

I haven't read the whole thread so please forgive if this has already been mentioned but, following on from thus Quidditch story, GB News's Michelle Dewberry has tweeted asking what JKR has done or said that is transphobic.

Not on Twitter so I can't reply but do any of you feel like enlightening Michelle?

It’s the snitch that gets me. It’s a ball in a sock, fastened to a player’s backside. Truly, this is a game of parody! Grin

A ball sock?

Is it hairy?

GrimDamnFanjo · 22/07/2022 12:57

A friends son plays for one of the London teams. He's about 25...

Oh please can it be rebranded/renamed 'oddballs'!!

Was there not a 80's UK comedy with that name??

Anyway, sorry but, that has name has been taken by a underwear brand and a testicular cancer charity🤷🏼‍♀️

FourChimneys · 22/07/2022 14:38

I have seen Quiddich played in real life. No amount of rebranding, for whatever reason, will make it look anything but silly. Surely it's only for groups of drunken undergraduates?

ThorsBedazzler · 22/07/2022 15:26

People playing quidditch in real life genuinely need to get a grip of themselves. It makes zero sense as a fictional sport and even less so when you are a grown adult galloping about with a stick between your legs.

And to then create teams and leagues, before then getting all uppity about the person who created it and cut your nonsense off from her imagination because your misunderstanding of what she actually said offended you? Total nonsense.

LeniGray · 22/07/2022 15:34

It’s not Quidditch people, it’s Quadball! Didn’t you get the memo?! Fucking bigots ffs! 😡

People running around with a broomstick between their legs pretending they are flying, that's a group who should be taken seriously.

We used to do this when we were kids pretending to be on horses - we grew out of it by the time we went to secondary school 😂

SpindleInTheWind · 22/07/2022 15:55

Ironically , the broom handles with little heads of them (often made out of socks stuffed with old flannel) were called ‘hobby horses’.

DancingUnderTheLights · 22/07/2022 16:00

It's funny and a little pathetic. It's surely not Quidditch anyway as they were never flying.

nauticant · 22/07/2022 16:16

I was brought to this thread by an opinion piece in today's The Times:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/you-dont-need-to-like-quidditch-to-back-jk-rowling-xfn5jxgwm

which included this fine sentence:

They are literally in fantasy land, one in which all you need to do is wave your magic wand to change sex.

which I doubt was accidental.

From upthread:

I've been amazed for years that JK didn't sue these weirdos for misusing the trademarked name she came up with.

If you look into it you'll see that most if not all of the Harry Potter related registered trade marks are owned by Warner Bros, for example trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/Results/1/UK00002216499. I'd expect there was agreed IP ownership as part of an overarching merchandising deal struck with JKR with her getting a specified cut of the revenue/profits.

Namerchangerextraordinaire · 22/07/2022 18:26

It doesn't matter what they call it, the game will always be the one invented by J.K. Rowling & anyone who ever reads the books will know it is the game like the one she called Quidditch.

The Harry Potter films could be remade at some point in the future, with different actors & actresses while the old ones become footnotes for a new generation.
It will still be based on the story J.K. Rowling wrote.
She will never be irrelevant to her work.

I think I came across that last night. Nobody could tell what she had wrong, though several of the attempts argued that saying that 'women and girls' menstruate is transphobic as it excludes trans men who also menstruate so language must evolve. That this erases the experiences of all women who are women because of living in a female body is not relevant at all, so while all animals are equal, some animals are more equal.

A few trans activists gave summaries of what she had said which distorted facts. For instance, that she had said that no trans woman should be working in care, which totally distorted her protests against the idea that a disabled girl or woman could no longer specify the sex of her carer. Similar distortions were common in that thread.

But most in that thread said that she had written nothing that was transphobic.

The problem with that is the definition of transphobic from the TRAs online, which equals being transphobic with anything short of simply accepting every demand the TRAs make, including the erasure of the female sex and giving total command of language to them.

ReneBumsWombats · 22/07/2022 18:38

Yes, this latest distortion infuriates me. She said, as we know, that vulnerable and disabled women need to be able to request a female carer if they want one. The fucking lying bastards are spreading it around that she's saying no male people should be allowed to be carers and transwomen carers are predators.

The modus operandi is not only to lie and distort. It's also to create such a tsunami of horrendous abuse that people eventually come to think that, even though they can't find it anywhere, she MUST have said something truly appalling because she wouldn't be getting this response otherwise. It was the same with Maya Forstater. The idea that she could have lost her job, and subsequent tribunal, for saying humans can't change sex was so risible that everyone assumed she must have said something else.

I'm a bit frustrated with people asking to know what JKR has said. Her essay is on her website and her Twitter account is public. Read it!

GreenIrishEyes · 22/07/2022 20:38

Men running around with broomsticks between their legs? The game won't be called "QuadBall" for long -- pretty soon it will be "NoBall."

SidewaysOtter · 22/07/2022 15:43

It was supposed to be ironic, difficult to tell these days isn’t it? Failed, sorry 😔

I’m amused, not angry (there are plenty of other things that matter to be angry about) … I’m very much in the ‘Sad Knobs on Broomsticks’ camp on this one.

KittenKong · 23/07/2022 09:44

Wasn’t that a childrens film foundation film?

MargaritaPie · 23/07/2022 14:12

"It's bloody weird for adults to run round with a stick between their legs pretending to fly - idiotic."

I agree with comment this I'm afraid.

Anyway at a time when wildfires are raging all over the place in many countries and people are dying from heat exhaustion, I think squabbling over what to call a game where adults jump around on brooms is rather trivial and there are better things to use energy on. Just my 2c.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 24/07/2022 10:26

I do not understand why you comment on threads without reading them, specially at a time when wildfires are raging all over the place in many countries and people are dying from heat exhaustion.

Do you think whatever you have to say is so important or insightful that it can’t possibly have been covered in the previous for pages? It is not.

At a time when wildfires are raging all over the place in many countries and people are dying from heat exhaustion, aren’t there better things to use your energy on than plopping your 2c onto threads on Mumsnet that you didn’t read?

There's a joke here somewhere around people getting confused about the reality of what's between their legs...

😂

Tanith · 21/07/2022 13:06

A while ago, I saw it described as “Sad Knobs On Broomsticks” Grin

Perfect! JKR is still winning at life and an inspiration to all women - this bunch of immature cocks? Not so much ...

FortunaMajor · 24/07/2022 14:19

They really should have run the new name through Urban Dictionary before they chose it...
