As is the case lately, comments are thhe best bit!

Quidditch now ‘quadball’ to distance sport from JK Rowling over her views on transgender issues

@NitroNine that is really interesting. I live near the place Tolkien grew up and the inspiration for Middle Earth. There is a cafe there which was called The Hungry Hobbit and the people who owned the rights to lord of the rings made them change it.
I bet JKR would have allowed the name as she is a decent person.

WinterTrees · 21/07/2022 08:48

In the books the snitch is a small flying ball; in the real-life sport it is a tennis ball attached to the shorts of a runner wearing a yellow shirt.

But all the players erase the existence of the runner in the yellow shirt from their consciousness and convince themselves that the tennis ball is a golden ball that actually flies by itself...

JKR is such a master of symbolism. The world she created is a treasure house of metaphors that work on so many levels.

I love the idea of people playing quidditch. It's the ultimate homage to her books.

I also adore the idea that these people can't bring themselves to just walk away from what they now find so distasteful- they want to have their cake, and eat it. Surprise surprise!

It’s not their cake, it’s JKR’s cake. You can put rainbow sprinkles all over the cake, but it is still her recipe.

Porcupineintherough · 21/07/2022 06:53

Until "quadball" is actually played on broomsticks, who cares? Quidditch will always be associated with JKR, all they have is a slightly sad derivative.

It is played on broomsticks! Obviously not flying ones though.....

florianfortescue · 21/07/2022 08:59

In the Times article it mentions that by changing the name they are freeing themselves from copyright restrictions by Warner Brothers, enabling them to take on sponsorship money that they couldn't previously access.

It seems obvious to me that this is the real motivation and they are just using the ridiculous "transphobia" accusations to justify it to their audience.

snowqu33n · 21/07/2022 08:59

Makes me think of Green Wing’s Guyball but not as funny

Mummy mustn’t have any rights. Mummy must stay in thrall to me, the mighty toddler, the irrepressible infant. Mummy must do whatever I say, whenever I say it.

Excellent summary of the ideology.

Mummy, the ultimate service human, must remain in that role forever, as most the entirety of her sex class.

NitroNine · 21/07/2022 09:19

@Norma27
Oh definitely. Well, as definitely as I can say given I’m not her. But it would fit with what she usually does, iyswim?

She’s not stopped hotels & rental homes setting themselves up with a complete Potter theme, for example

I aim to please, @JellySaurus(see what I did there?)

Just as we can tell a man from a woman, we can also see that this game is still quiditch

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/07/2022 09:30

'What are you doing?'

'We're playing Quidditch'

'You're 32 and running around pretending to be child wizards? Oh-kayyyy'

'Hey, do you still play that wizard game?'

'NO! It's nothing to do with wizards and that evil JKR!'

'Is that your toy magic broomstick in the Volvo? So you are still pretending to be ten years old and magic/a more advanced breed of being compared to normal ordinary people?'

'Yes. But it's not Quidditch, it's called Quadball now. It's more inclusive that way'.

DelurkingLawyer · 21/07/2022 09:31

Apparently the quidditch league in the US had an agreement with Warner Bros which greatly restricted any broadcasting. They now want to bring their sport to a wider monetisation audience so they have changed the name, and dressed it up as a victory against JKR.

I saw in pictures that many of the sticks don’t have a broom on the end of them. Apparently many players now just use a length of pipe. With no broomstick and no association with the Potterverse, I don’t know what will distinguish them from a bunch of twats playing a version of handball while holding sticks between their legs.

MagpiePi · 21/07/2022 10:53

sashh · 21/07/2022 07:01

People running around with a broomstick between their legs pretending they are flying, that's a group who should be taken seriously.

If they identify as 'flying child wizards' then they ARE actually flying child wizards. Gravity is just being flying-phobic.

Porcupineintherough · 21/07/2022 10:58

@latetothefisting I don't think they count as broomsticks unless they fly. And the ones I've seen playing just use broomhandles, and proper stupid they look too.

ReneBumsWombats · 21/07/2022 11:01

badbaduncle · 21/07/2022 08:43

I've been amazed for years that JK didn't sue these weirdos for misusing the trademarked name she came up with. It's bloody weird for adults to run round with a stick between their legs pretending to fly - idiotic. I bet she is delighted.

I'm sure none of them wanted to lose their virginity anyway.

With regard to trademarking, she has always been a huge advocate of free speech. That's why, unlike her detractors, she doesn't close the comments on her tweets even when she knows she's in for a firestorm of abuse, and has given her tacit permission for all the fanfic. It's also why she didn't speak against Macy Gray when Gray (understandably) broke under the abuse, and in fact reprimanded those who said she should. She mentioned that white men shouldn't be telling black women how to comport themselves.

I can't get over the lies and half truths that have been spread about her.

Can anyone share it so that I can read without a subscription?

Thelnebriati · 21/07/2022 11:30

The link in the OP has a share token but I think the comments are gone.

ReneBumsWombats · 21/07/2022 11:43

What was the consensus of the comments before they vanished?

mcduffy · 21/07/2022 11:49

There are still comments, 741 and climbing. You need a subscription to read them not I think, they allow share tokens for the article itself.

Ah, I see. Thank you. I don't have a subscription and can't see them...can you say what they're generally saying?

EsmaCannonball · 21/07/2022 12:14

Remember when young people couldn't wait to be regarded as sexy and sophisticated and grown-up? Now they seem desperate to cling on to pre-adolescent childhood in a way that is almost sinister; sinister because they expect and demand the rest of the world adapts to their inability to cope with the complexities of adulthood. Anything they can't deal with has to be razed to the level of the nursery.

It's also notable that they rarely protest by giving things up; no strikes, no genuine boycotts, no sacrifice, no going without. They throw tantrums, they invoke the wrath of Twitter, but if that doesn't work they just say, 'Ok, I'm not actually going to give up everything to do with Harry Potter, I'm just going to retreat into my glittery unicorn world and pretend that J.K. Rowling doesn't exist.'

SidewaysOtter · 21/07/2022 12:28

It all gets a bit phallic at that point.
