Just saw this.

They have embraced the new religion.

Hearteningly most of the replies are calling it out.

Institutions are made of people. Most people are susceptible to ideology. That's why this is all so worrying. Anyone who thinks it's bullshit, but thinks people are making a mountain our of a molehill needs to reassess. It is pervasive and power driven and has fuck all to do with trans rights, inclusion or equality.

bellinisurge · 17/07/2022 15:06

Well I suppose it's one way to show how a middle aged middle class affluent white man can make himself into an oppressed person

Clementinecerise · 17/07/2022 15:06

I feel sorry for they’s colleagues. In an HE institution they will have no choice but to absolutely pander to this privileged white male as they are forced to share in they’s journey.

It's the conceit of "coming out" as NB that I find offensive. It's appropriating the language of gay people, many of whom go through hell as they deal with bullying, rejection, fear etc. And not so long ago being gay was illegal in this country.

This bloke in an establishment lgbtq -friendly organisation doesn't have much to worry about other than being mocked on twitter.

I think you need to start referrin to an institute for The Higher Education of Youth now, becaus I'm sure they will only want to work at a THEY institution

I agree. And you’d think of all people he would get this. He talks about the difficulties of being gay as a young man and coming out in his twenties - presumably in the 90s when life could still be difficult for a gay man in the UK. Announcing to the world that you are neither male nor female because of your special personality- an announcement which, given the kind of circles I imagine he moves in will have been met publicly with much gushing and fawning - is not the same as that.

in his own Twitter he says that he made this announcement to make life easier for other ‘queer scientists’. I can’t imagine how he thinks he is doing that.

Omg!!! Spot on!!!!

KittenKong · 17/07/2022 15:55

So… how does he (they?) select a potential partner? If male and female is so… complicated?

someone just wants to be special. And I feel sorry for their colleagues, boss and HR (actually not HR because they should be stamping out this utter brain rot)

Apollo442 · 17/07/2022 15:58

They've turned off replies. Why do they leave Social Media accounts in the hands of children? No one is buying this shit anymore, it's been called out.

JacquelinePot · 17/07/2022 16:07

Good lord, what absolute nonsense! This person is 50 years old going on 15. I'm embarrassed on them's behalf

borntobequiet · 17/07/2022 16:13

The planet thanks you for choosing a carbon-neutral mid-life crisis.

I like this reply.

pink85 · 17/07/2022 16:41

The comments are a scream 😂

IneffableGenderFairy · 17/07/2022 16:44

Well, that twitter thread has given me a new user name.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 17/07/2022 18:15

What exactly is it about this masculine presenting man with a beard that makes him 'non binary'? Why do we need to pretend his sex is now irrelevant?

Like the daft teens who think they've invented androgy by giving it a new name.

Noooo I wanted that one!!

Beowulfa · 19/07/2022 13:40

Those comments have really cheered me up.

Clementinecerise · 19/07/2022 13:44

Yes they are brilliant. No one is having it.

The comments are superb. Thanks, Giles, for helping expose this ideology as the nonsensical BS that it is. PS: are you REALLY a scientist?

FrancescaContini · 19/07/2022 13:46

BlueWhat · 17/07/2022 15:35

Omg!!! Spot on!!!!

Yes. Very astute - thank you!

Beowulfa · 19/07/2022 13:50

I was on a coach trip with people of the older generation recently. One of them pointed out a bi-plane from the window. Someone else responded "how do you know it's not non-binary?" Raucous laughter.

IT'S BOLLOCKS.

MangyInseam · 19/07/2022 14:02

Wow, I don't think I saw one positive reply.

But this is not the first time, if I remember correctly, that the RS has promoted gender ideology. Although I think they had more support before, I wonder if people are beginning to see it for what it really is.

KittenKong · 19/07/2022 14:07

I feel sorry for the fella. ‘They’ (one person) probably gets talked into being ‘the face of’ (come on Fred, it will be great. Being gay just ain’t enough these days, we need something special. They’ll all love you!’) and just getting a load of 🙄🤪🤣

or maybe ‘they’ volunteered - but you’d think/hope that someone who cares would have said ‘no don’t do it! It makes you look a right dingbat’. If that had been my brother I’d’ve told him in no uncertain terms.

yetanotherusernameAgain · 19/07/2022 14:09

Having read the article itself, I wonder if the non-binary bit is just a way to shoehorn in a tweet relevant for Non-Binary Awareness Day.

He says he grew up as LGBTQ+ (what, all of of them? Must have been exhausting) which turns out to mean gay man, married to a husband for the past 15 years, and hasn't experienced harassment outside his professional life for 30 years. The non-binary bit is recent but he doesn't explain what it means. Identifies strongly as 'queer'.

In the last paragraph he suggests that the Royal Society could ".. ask the incoming fellows to voluntarily disclose their sexual and gender identities" as a way to foster change in the science sector.

KittenKong · 19/07/2022 14:12

So he grew up in the LGB community then. They don’t have all this new fangled stuff when he was young. I am about the same age and spent my formative years in gay clubs and bars.

Bless, he’s trying to be ‘down with the youth’ is he?
