"Penny Mordaunt’s claims she has never supported gender self-identification have come under fresh scrutiny after leaked government documents seemed to contradict her.
Papers drawn up by civil servants appear to show that as equalities minister she was in favour of removing at least one element of the medical process required for transgender people to legally transition.
Another from February 2020 confirms that the government’s support for self-identification ended after she was replaced as the minister in charge.
Last night a source familiar with the discussions said it was proof that Mordaunt, now a contender to become leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister, had backed self-identification. They added that it directly contradicted her claim, made during the Channel 4 leadership debate on Friday night, that she had “never been in favour of self-ID” and would “not have divorced it from healthcare”."
