"Penny Mordaunt’s claims she has never supported gender self-identification have come under fresh scrutiny after leaked government documents seemed to contradict her.

Papers drawn up by civil servants appear to show that as equalities minister she was in favour of removing at least one element of the medical process required for transgender people to legally transition.

Another from February 2020 confirms that the government’s support for self-identification ended after she was replaced as the minister in charge.

Last night a source familiar with the discussions said it was proof that Mordaunt, now a contender to become leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister, had backed self-identification. They added that it directly contradicted her claim, made during the Channel 4 leadership debate on Friday night, that she had “never been in favour of self-ID” and would “not have divorced it from healthcare”."

Well it was pretty clear from statements made by Kemi B and Liz Truss in the TV debate that this was the case, not to mention coverage on MN back in the day. Reassuring that this is now such a toxic policy as they recognise that the general public are not supportive of self ID.

Badenoch: “I’m not going to call Penny a liar. I think it’s possible she genuinely did not understand what she was signing off.”

Call an ambulance!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 16/07/2022 18:52

oh dear Penny

wheels coming off?

JacquelinePot · 16/07/2022 19:08

@achillestoes straight to the burns unit! 🚑

Thank you so much for that share token for the article. Reading with interest. It's what we've all been saying on here, isn't it?

So duplicitous.

Even if you don't care about 'the trans issue', we really don't need another prime minister who blatantly lies.

Chef's kiss to the anonymous civil servant!

achillestoes · 16/07/2022 19:41

It’s all so unnecessary. She should just say what she believes.

Signalbox · 16/07/2022 19:56

She’s either a liar or she didn’t understand what she was doing or she is a really poor communicator. None make her a good candidate for PM.

BootsAndRoots · 16/07/2022 20:06

She's either a liar or incompetent. Both or which are not good traits for a PM, but at least a liar knows what they're doing.

It shows that civil servants are likely to push this stuff through if she was in power.

I literally can’t believe that her twin brother was engaged to David Paisley, but apparently it’s true!

Yep. I did enjoy Kemi shouting 'tell the truth, Liz!' when Truss was questioned on Penny's account.

Pluvia · 16/07/2022 23:14

Penny Mordaunt's twin brother is gay and was in a relationship with David Paisley.

I don't understand why she didn't just own it and keep advocating for self id. There's definitely a voting market for a Tory option who would support it - reduce regulation, let people live their lives, Grant Shapps stylee. She wouldn't make PM this time but it would give her a USP with a future generation. It does suggest she doesn't have much in the way of a philosophy or commitments. And that she's not the brightest or very honest, a bit apt to go along with whatever people are saying around her.

Because she's obviously realised that self ID isn't a vote winner with most of the electorate

www.spectator.co.uk/article/revealed-penny-mordaunt-s-hidden-equalities-agenda

More from The Spectator:

But Mr S has obtained a recording of a speech Mordaunt gave to LGBT+ Tory activists in June 2018, in which she did seem to suggest that it was her strategy not to be straight about what she was doing. At the time she was minister for women and equalities and was responsible for overseeing the consultation on reform of the Gender Recognition Act and whether it should be made easier to change gender.
^^
She told the room that she ‘can’t even be seen to be helping with’ some of the proposed legislation she was privately championing. She also argued that ‘we have to have a huge campaign’ on transgender rights to aggressively combat the ‘hate and the ignorance’ of the ‘media’ and ‘campaign groups.’

MangyInseam · 17/07/2022 21:24

If I were going to bet on the truth I would say that she believed it and thought that it was going to prevail, that she was backing the next gay rights movement. And anyone who thought otherwise was a nasty bigot or a silly turnip.

She's now seeing that it won't go quite so smoothly. Does she now see the issues? It's certainly not clear that she does, and denying the whole thing almost makes it seem more like she doesn't.

Twindow · 17/07/2022 21:32

Well it doesn't come nastier or more extreme than David Paisley. That's concerning news.

Twindow · 17/07/2022 21:32

Yes, okay, it probably does, but he's one of my pet hates.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 17/07/2022 21:50

I spotted this earlier today - written for Conservatives for Women by Caroline Fiske.
It's a jaw dropping account of Mordant's specific role in pushing extreme unscientific and harmful gender ideology into all of our government institutions - and most shamefully schools:

Mrstwiddle · 17/07/2022 21:56

The Spectator story is evidence (if it were needed) that she is deceptive. For people who may not be concerned about the self-I’d issue, hopefully it will cause them to wonder what else she’s willing to lie about.

Twindow · 17/07/2022 22:01

I wonder how much outside involvement there is in this. Whether someone's been assigned to her.
