Leaked documents call Penny Mordaunt’s gender self-ID claims into question

"Penny Mordaunt’s claims she has never supported gender self-identification have come under fresh scrutiny after leaked government documents seemed to contradict her.

Papers drawn up by civil servants appear to show that as equalities minister she was in favour of removing at least one element of the medical process required for transgender people to legally transition.

Another from February 2020 confirms that the government’s support for self-identification ended after she was replaced as the minister in charge.

Last night a source familiar with the discussions said it was proof that Mordaunt, now a contender to become leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister, had backed self-identification. They added that it directly contradicted her claim, made during the Channel 4 leadership debate on Friday night, that she had “never been in favour of self-ID” and would “not have divorced it from healthcare”."

How do you mean Twindo? Like a Stonewall person?

nettie434 · 18/07/2022 06:30

I completely agree that the last thing the country needs is another Prime Minister who is economical with the truth. Having seen her name on numerous threads on this board, I was amazed that she has been so blatant in her denials.

Now Dorries is tweeting about Mordaunt’s intransigence on her position in erasing the word mother from legislation, including claiming to have WhatsApp exchanges with Mordaunt in which she dismissed Dorries’ concerns and told her to focus on the positives. Mordaunt also said in a phone call with Dorries that the Equality Act meant legislation couldn’t contain the words “woman” or “mother”.

Dorries, Badenoch and Truss then went to Johnson. Truss then took over that brief.

But even without Mordant’s obvious attempts at deception she is an intellectual lightweight. She didn’t engage in the debate last night except to offer comments like “we shouldn’t be petty”! And the reason she thinks she will be the best Prime Minister is because she has “a team”…..

achillestoes · 18/07/2022 08:11

@BlueKaftan

That was a dreadful answer. She was asked why she would be a good leader, wasn’t she? “Because I’ll build a team” is woeful.

darcyesque · 18/07/2022 08:14

Do Conservative MPs actually think Penny Mordaunt will help them retain their seats at the next election? They cannot be that stupid

The talk of her being Labour's next nightmare is obviously coming from her own backers largely through BBC journalists who are lapping it up. Are they her campaign team?

But Labour is feeding it. As if they're afraid of Penny M . Do me a favour

achillestoes · 18/07/2022 10:58

I know people aren’t their families. It’s not Penny’s fault her brother is a TRA. But he’s had to delete his old tweets for a reason. By the looks of it there’s a lot of sex stuff on there, and there are some - not sure how else to put this - risqué pictures on the internet. I wouldn’t be very surprised if (assuming she did win) there were some interesting stories coming in the media. That’s not PM’s fault in any way but the pattern seems to be interesting, scandalous leader (Cameron and the pig’s head) followed by a boring one (May and her wheat fields), and the Mordaunts might be just a bit too spicy.

PermanentTemporary · 18/07/2022 14:47

I don't think that's the pattern tbh. I think Isabel Oakeshott made up the pig's head and it's a bit ridiculous that it still gets brought up. Cameron's family life was the most appealing thing about him (not saying much). And although I don't think much of PM it's because she seems to have an elastic relationship with truth, not because she has a brother with a kinky social media presence.

In that case Mordaunt either deliberately lied about the Equality Act while she was Equality Minister, or had no knowledge whatever about the Equality Act and couldn't be bothered to take freely available legal advice on it before spouting deliberately misleading TRA propaganda while Equality Minister and acting on said propaganda in using her position to change legislation etc. How is she fit to be prime minister?

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 18/07/2022 23:59

I’m glad Nadine Dorries and others are not letting this lie.

nettie434 · 19/07/2022 22:54

It's not just her denials of what she did when she was Equalities Minister, she also denied that Britain had a veto over Turkey joining the EU and allowed people to think she was a Royal Navy reservist.

i actually would have respected her more if she'd stuck to her original viewpoint instead of trying to pretend she had always argued in favour of women's rights.

Tallisker · 19/07/2022 23:08

Is she not a Royal Navy reservist?

Pluvia · 20/07/2022 00:22

According to this, PM has never properly qualified as a reservist:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11015669/Senior-officers-questioned-Penny-Mordaunts-Navy-claims.html

It looks as if she's the female version of Boris. Wears the truth lightly.
