It's a bit jarring to read his description of 'gender affirming' surgery as mutilation. Of course he's right, but seeing it in the DM is quite a thing.

I loved his TV shows back in the 90s. He explains the science in a really easy to understand manner. I was always fascinated about how women are more likely to have sex with men other than their partner around ovulation. Her body given the choice of familiar sperm or stranger sperm would accept the stranger sperm for conception. The result is one in four children don't have the father they think they have. Biology really is amazing and there is no evolutionary function to changing sex.

If I remember correctly, prof RW in QT spoke briefly about chromosomal, hormonal and genital sex. 3 sides of the same coin.

The inference being you can manipulate your hormones and genitals but not your (sex) chromosomes.

Which I presume is why many trans people who have elected to have CSH treatment and/or SRS (removal of hormone producing and responding organs) should be closely monitored. You are basically trying to overwrite your code. Mixed messages coming from the chromosomes and hormones. The body must be constantly fighting itself. Resulting in degrees of health related problems.

I am constantly in awe of our body’s capacity to keep on going no matter how much crap we feed / put it through.

I do wonder if the young drama student who was arguing on QT that you could change sex looked up who RW is after the filming?

I wonder if Alice thinks about mutations and/or DNA manipulation. DNA and sometimes chromosomes change otherwise there'd be no evolution and no cancer either. DNA changes are usually not a good thing. I have yet to see a mutation that leads to someone changing sex though.

Mutilation. Mutilated. Mutilate.

I have seen from certain detransitioners, pleas for well-meaning people not to refer to them this way. I can see why - when they're already distressed about what they've allowed to happen to their bodies, it's not helpful.

India Willoughby, Britain’s first transgender newsreader, who has appeared on ITV shows Good Morning Britain and This Morning, condemned the scientist’s remarks, writing on Twitter: “‘They can mutilate their body . . . ’ @ProfRWinston. What a horrendous thing to say. [Trans] people have existed since time in memorial, children as young as 3 know they’re the opposite sex. Every culture. Natural occurring. Your [view] seems to be anatomy rather than brain dictates who we are.”

Bless India’s heart. Not the brightest spark in the fire is IW

Three year olds don't know their arse from their fucking elbow. They barely make sense, piss their pants on a regular basis and throw tantrums. They have no idea whether they're this sex, the opposite sex or something in between (not possible, I know; just humour me).

India Willoughby's a dense bloke!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/07/2022 13:14

Just seen in the Times article a certain IW is quoted as saying this is not Robert Winstons field!! Errrr…….

I guess it's India Willoughby's field of science, what with all those impressive accolades and qualifications India has.

felicityfortunate · 14/07/2022 14:39

IW proves frequently himself to be so unreasonable
It's not possible to "know" that you're something you're not, even as a grown up. He's an idiot

Based on that description, maybe 3 year olds fit perfect into the TRA community. 🤣🤣🤣

so basically TRAs but cuter and with more chance of being reasoned with?

Slothtoes · 14/07/2022 16:50

Three year olds love women and don’t hate them so I think they’re already way ahead of the TRAs.

ForeverBeach · 14/07/2022 17:09

it will be a relief to many of them who are deeply uncomfortable with that political signalling to see a publicly prominent scientist telling the truth calmly and clearly.

We need more.

All of us need to speak out now, with friends, family, colleagues.

It

I love the guy. He's absolutely spot on.

TheBiologyStupid · 14/07/2022 23:56

Yes, Baroness Nicholson referred to Lord Sir Winston (if I have the crazy protocol right!) saying this when she spoke in the House of Lords shortly afterwards.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 15/07/2022 08:21

Well it is indeed mutilation and no amount of pussy footing around will change that fact.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 15/07/2022 08:36

Motnight · 13/07/2022 17:25

How long before he is forced to see the light and apologise do we think?

He won't. About 5 or 6 years ago he was firmly in the 'be kind' camp. His current stance is his corrected course, I doubt he will be moved off it. Somewhen in the last few years he seems to have come face to face with the reality of what his original, probably unthinking, stance supported.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 15/07/2022 08:38

nothingcomestonothing · 13/07/2022 18:20

Why is it jarring?

I suppose because the dominant discourse is always so coy - trans-affirming healthcare, top surgery etc. I don't know if I've ever seen MSM be honest about what it is, mutilation.

The problem here, specifically MN, is that many, me included, have been deleted, put on the naughty step for using that term.

We are not speaking freely here.

It’s so wild that in 2022 we are grateful for a senior scientist publicly stating biological truth.

I’m a scientist, and if ten-year-ago me had seen the title of this thread, I would have been absolutely baffled at why it even existed.

What a time to be alive.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 15/07/2022 12:41

I see The Monitors have arrived!

BordoisAgain · 15/07/2022 13:10

I assume we are ok to refer to SRS as mutilation as we are quoting someone else's words...

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/07/2022 19:37

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 15/07/2022 12:41

I see The Monitors have arrived!

I never know why the monitors bother on here now. I mean they've got the Times, Telegraph, Mail and even the Guardian to police, not to mention Facebook, the BBC & countless major news sources all finally reporting facts and the truth. Surely that keeps them busy? (although I suppose there's a certain frisson in getting to silence women) 😑

Igneococcus · 15/07/2022 19:39

Huh, they are also busy on the Douglas Murray article in the Times. They must be workign overtime.

Clarabe1 · 15/07/2022 19:43

Professor Robert Winston.. what does he know? I am not listening to anyone unless they have blue hair, use a ton of emoji’s and have an avatar for their profile pic.
