It's a bit jarring to read his description of 'gender affirming' surgery as mutilation. Of course he's right, but seeing it in the DM is quite a thing.

I saw this response on Twitter yesterday 😂

Sir Robert Winston says you can't change sex
brookstar · 13/07/2022 21:09

He was on Question Time a few months ago and said it’s not possible to change sex, that he knew he’d get flamed for this on SM and that he didn’t care. I got the impression he’s been saying it for a while so I don’t think he will back down.

The best but about that was the drama student telling him he was wrong 😂

HMSSophia · 13/07/2022 21:12

I've long held a torch for him so this is heartwarming news and my crush can continue :)

ShaneTwane · 13/07/2022 21:17

Oh I've always adored prof Winston since I was a little girl watching child of our time with my mom.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/07/2022 21:40

I like him even more now.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 13/07/2022 21:42

But then the question is should they be allowed to compete in sport. That's a major problem because of course they still have certain male characteristics which will likely give them an edge over other women

It pisses me off that he used 'other women' here.

They still have male characteristics which will likely give them an advantage over women.

When we have got to the point where it takes a doctor to tell the world what EVERYONE already knows, we are completely lost.

What next?
Physicist needed to tell people not to jump off skyscrapers due to a force called gravity?
The world is going backwards.

What's so frightening is that there are numerous people who insist he's wrong and are busy telling children and the gullible that it's oh so complicated Confused

Conflictedunicorn · 14/07/2022 06:05

Just seen in the Times article a certain IW is quoted as saying this is not Robert Winstons field!! Errrr…….

Conflictedunicorn · 14/07/2022 06:07

India Willoughby, Britain’s first transgender newsreader, who has appeared on ITV shows Good Morning Britain and This Morning, condemned the scientist’s remarks, writing on Twitter: “‘They can mutilate their body . . . ’ @ProfRWinston. What a horrendous thing to say. [Trans] people have existed since time in memorial, children as young as 3 know they’re the opposite sex. Every culture. Natural occurring. Your [view] seems to be anatomy rather than brain dictates who we are.”

Bless India’s heart. Not the brightest spark in the fire is IW

NotBadConsidering · 14/07/2022 06:15

What’s India on about now? Of course it’s not our brains that determine who we are, it’s a repetitively posted photo of a legal fiction of a passport that determines who we are. Silly India! You know this! 👋

Conflictedunicorn · 14/07/2022 06:18

Of course. Or just saying magic words. I love the way she tries to tell Sir a Robert about 3 year olds. He did a whole ongoing series on children and development. And I hate to break it to .India but no one, especially 3 year olds, knows they are the opposite sex.

On another note, have you seen the difference in tone between how IW speaks to him and the response to Macy Gray? If this dies not point out what a sexist, misogynistic pig IW is, nothing will.

It's worse than that. Plenty of doctors are willing to pretend that sex change is possible. The NHS is apparently full of medics who believe this nonsense.

It's as though the physicists are saying "well, gravity only affects you if you allow it to".

It takes a lot of education to become this gullible.

lovelyweathertoday · 14/07/2022 06:22

Remember, every time we politely use "she" for men we make it harder to argue that sex is immutable.

Conflictedunicorn · 14/07/2022 06:26

I try not to, I usually avoid pronouns altogether, just repeat the names lot.

loislovesstewie · 14/07/2022 06:38

Does Alice actually believe that chromosomes can change? I'm sorry, but they clearly have no grasp of biology. If they can change, then there would be no need for treatment, presumably because we could think ourselves different.

Fucket · 14/07/2022 07:13

physicists already have to argue that the world is not flat. Proof that some people will believe anything and Otherwise intelligent people can be made to follow any idea if presented to them in an appealing way.

Winston: Trans surgery is mutilation

Musomama1 · 14/07/2022 07:56

IW, 3 year olds are 3 year olds. Developmentally they are nowhere near identity, they are developing imaginative play. My 3 year old pretends to be a dog, Grandmaster glitch, dangermouse, all sorts. What is it with adults putting adults concepts on younger and younger children?

Brain sex? All this shows is we have a massive diversity of males and females and that gender stereotypes really are bullshit.

felicityfortunate · 14/07/2022 08:20

He is great but so much transgender discourse agrees that it's not possible to change sex, but that gender is real and fluid (or not- depending on what boundaries are attempted to be obliterated) and is separate from sex so it doesn't matter that you can't change sex (although some say you can) because lady brains

Clymene · 14/07/2022 08:23

I didn't know the stats he quotes "He said about 40 per cent of people who had vaginal reconstruction suffered some complication and 23 per cent of those who had their breasts removed “feel uncomfortable with what they’ve done”.

I would expect that latter number to go up as increasing numbers of young women have radical mastectomies when they are in the grip of social contagion

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/07/2022 08:32

Interestingly, when Robert Winston spoke about this on QT he was sat next to none other than Penny Mourdant

Considering looking at chromosomal abnormalities is a significant feature of infertility (well miscarriages in our case), and Hammersmith offered pre-implantation genetic testing before IVF, for people carrying the genes for life threatening conditions, I’d have thought understanding chromosomes and genes was fundamental in his work!

Anyway, having met him quite a few times, as he was our gynaecologist, I doubt very much he will be swayed by pressure from social media? He says what he thinks!

Slothtoes · 14/07/2022 08:48

He’s a genuine good un. I’m very grateful to him for speaking out on repeated occasions when as a man he doesn’t have to, and as a famous scientist his words will carry weight and authority with some people who don’t really care what women think or aren’t listening to the wider debates. Science in academia seems to be incredibly be-pronouned (don’t know about science in industry) and it will be a relief to many of them who are deeply uncomfortable with that political signalling to see a publicly prominent scientist telling the truth calmly and clearly.

Tallisker · 14/07/2022 08:52

It's 'time immemorial' btw
