Is CIS a legal term?

So I had a conversation with a friend the other day who is adamant Cis is an accurate descriptor of women and that it is written into law?
I asked where but she couldn't specify just stating it's a factual term (referencing women) that is legally recognized.
I've had a look and can't seem to find anything to back this up, but I know the wise women here will know if there is any truth to this.
Thanks in advance.

Out of curiosity, why would anyone think that cis needs to be defined in law ?

A term that captures a proportion of the population that can only be identified by self reporting , that has no unified connection to anything where law might matter

  • like do cis gendered women get paid less or hit on more that women without gender ?
Artichokeleaves · 11/07/2022 18:52

I'm a woman and I'm saying cisgender isn't offensive.

And I'm a woman saying it is to me.

You do you. Leave everyone else alone. End of problem. Enact your faith how you like and stop trying to make everyone else pray with you.

@HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd cisgender is just when your gender identity matches your biological sex. It's just another descriptor and is just the opposite of transgender. That's all. We're still either women or men (or neither if that's what you want). People tend to use it as a way of saying those who aren't trans, as that is all it means.

But you are ignoring people who tell you they do not have a gender identity!

I am not cis or trans because I do not have a gender identity.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/07/2022 18:41

It's not just about this word though, is it.

No, but you can't treat is as one issue.

If I had a fiver for every time I said we shouldn't mock or dismiss trans as an ideology and someone said AH SO YOU AGREE WITH TAKING OUR SPACES, WE SAY NO i'd be a rich woman, despite the fact I'd actually support you on this.

I am referring to the issue at hand.

Yes so everyone keeps saying, but as I keep saying I don’t HAVE a gender identity. I have no sense of one at all. I was very very small when I realised girls were supposed to do this, wear that, play the other, and I have never wanted any part of it.

Im not really supposed to just pretend a sense of gender identical I don’t feel, am I? I cannot call myself “cisgender” prescisely because I do not have a gender identity. I thought everyone was supposed to determine their own gender descriptor?

Hobbitfeet32 · 11/07/2022 18:53

I’m confused as to how I would know if my gender identity is the same as my sex. What makes me a woman?
Going by @Flolawri ’s list I shouldn’t be a woman.

I'm going to pretend you didn't just compare me to a paedophile, you disgusting individual. I won't be engaging with you again. I've read some bile in my time but you win hands down.

They are doing them. You just don't like it.

the irony is, ti's the feminists who are trying to make everyone else see things their way! "humans cannot change sex" ad nauseum - why doesnt you do you apply there?

It's not a subcategory. It's a category. And trans is far more complex than "men playing at being women", as you well know.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 18:55

@HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd gender identity is a bit weird. We're all our own versions of women or men. We all define it in our own ways.

it's feminists' way of attempting to erase it - it's not law so there.

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 18:55

"cisgender is just when your gender identity matches your biological sex."

So @Flolawri can you accept that plenty of women don't have a "gender identity" and want to continue to classify people (only where necessary) by their sex? And that sex matters in some circumstances, for safety, privacy, dignity for example.

Other people are welcome to refer to their own "gender identity" and organise things for themselves according to their "gender identity" but must recognise that it's not something that should be imposed on people that don't have the same beliefs.

bellinisurge · 11/07/2022 18:56

@beautyisthefaceisee I didn't compare you to a paedophile, for goodness sake. The casual use of this term is to use self justification terms that paedophiles use.

tobee · 11/07/2022 18:57

Fairislefandango · 11/07/2022 18:51

And here we are, being rude to one another, insulting one another, over a word. A word.

Words are very important. Maybe think about some of the mere 'words' which have been used through history to describe other groups of people. Would you be telling those groups to stop making a fuss about a word? Also you are getting upset at people insulting each other? Insults are 'just words' too.

Interestingly I have heard it say they are important when it comes to misgendering, pronouns etc.

Yes you did. You implied we keep company with them. If you want to make your bold statements make them, but there is no place for them in civilised debate.

This is a women and parents site FFS.

Interestingly I have heard it say they are important when it comes to misgendering, pronouns etc.

So you can have it both ways.

Pronouns are a load of nonsense and fair play to ridicule but cis is offensive. Funny it only works one way.

I'm not "getting upset". i just think it impacts reasonable debate.

bellinisurge · 11/07/2022 18:58

People should learn who dreamt up this terminology.

@HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd gender identity is a bit weird. We're all our own versions of women or men. We all define it in our own ways.

Now there I agree with you again, and that’s because sex is just biology and gender is just societally prescribed norms.

If people want to adhere to norms that’s great. If they want to reject norms that’s also great, but personally all I have is sex and personality. If you put my brain in another body, I would just observe the sex of that body and get on with life, I have absolutely zero feeling of “brain sex” or innate gender.

So I just want my feeling of not having a gender id respected and I don’t want to be bullied into labelling myself cisgender, because I’m not.

LaSavoie · 11/07/2022 18:59

cisgender is just when your gender identity matches your biological sex

What word do trans people use to describe the biological sex class of XX? Regardless of how that person identifies?

I never said I don't accept it. Have a gender identity or don't. I'm purely just stating what cisgender means, not forcing the label on anyone.

Repeating the same thing without the offensive word doesnt make what you said any less offensive.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 19:00

@HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd I'm not trying to force cisgender or gender identity on anyone, that's wrong. I'd hate for someone to force me to be a man. I'm just here to explain what these terms are, not say that's what you should use.
