Why “Prosecco stormfront”? I think I must have missed something.

Lazy stereotyping. I prefer red wine or lager. 🍷🍻

I think Antifa I trying to imply that MN is full of reactionary Karens with a fondness for alcohol. Or something.

Helleofabore · 01/07/2022 23:35

Rookie.

It is derogatory. It is a lame attempt to further align MN to extremist beliefs. Storefront is a hate site (neo nazi). And obviously MN is full of Prosecco drinkers according to those who spawned the term. So full of sexist and classist derision.

Some posters really get infuriated when other people don’t agree with them. And point out their constant hyperbole and misinformation.

And yes, she has been quite upfront about her approach to abortion which is also much more nuanced than some posters like to admit.

It's very clear what she's proposing.

Paragraph 4 about exceptions for a child who will be born disabled.
She is concerned about abortion being used as eugenics against all disabilities in a blanket way.

ScrollingLeaves · 02/07/2022 00:23

Not paragraph 4. Paragraph d.

None of that corresponds to fundamentalist American views on abortion.

She proposed a bill to limit abortions to
12 nuanced weeks.

just calling women talking about the flags nazis

got it…

ScrollingLeaves · 02/07/2022 09:57

I listened to her speech in the H of Lords. This was her plea on behalf of foetuses/people whose disabilities, if they were born, (rather than aborted under exceptions to extend abortion times in certain circumstances) would not limit their lives so badly as to make their lives not worth living.

If she thinks that abortion on demand should be limited to under 12 weeks/1st Trimester (with access beyond this time under certain conditions ) she would be in line with other European countries like Germany, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland.

(In practice in Scotland it is 15 weeks and Wales18 - people have to travel to England)

Most people may disagree and her opinion did not prevail, we still have 24 weeks but

In what way was her opinion the same as that of those banning all abortion in the affected U.S. States?

In what way does this make everything she says something to dismiss?

Back to the OP which is about her letter on a different issue.

Helleofabore · 02/07/2022 10:05

So antifascist, you done in reviling others for having a different opinion? Including a Baroness that will have likely done more for women and children in her career at government level than you?

or are you just going to double down with no discussion? Just denigration, dismissal and shame?

What are you talking about? She voted against gay marriage and an equal age of consent. She's a homophobe.

Indeed, that is why a number of lesbians went and protested her home.

I see we have another poster who seems to forget how laws are made under the Westminster Parliament system.

If a proposed law does not fulfill the need that a MP’s constituents want, or that MP sees potential issues arising from the wording of the law, they don’t vote for it. It is not like a popular vote, it is making law. And LGB lobby groups at the time expressed some reservations with the law when Baroness Nicholson voted against it.

She has publicly stated why she did. It wasn’t at all how some posters have expressed it. It was again because she had concerns about the protections of women and children under the proposed law.

But some posters across different threads keep trying to twist it to be out of hate and bigotry.

No LGBT groups expressed reservations about an equal age of consent in the 90s. Yet she opposed it.

Equally, she opposed gay marriage because she thought women marrying each other would "degrade" them.

She is a homophobe.

It's interesting how this entire conversation is all about the purity otherwise of Emma Nicholson and no about the stupid flags.

Funny how she cites a Twitter poll - which anyone who knows anything about a). social media and b). polling will tell you is not representative of public opinion.

Most people quite like the LGBT community, Pride and all that comes with it. She's a very small minority on this issue, folks.

The flags are great, LGBT people are great.

If Emma Nicholson doesn't like us perhaps she could move to somewhere more in line with her views. Maybe Saudi Arabia. I think that would make her and many other people happy.

Artichokeleaves · 02/07/2022 10:30

She's homophobic?

Less than Stonewall is. She doesn't want to end the right of people to be homosexual or insist that they 'learn to cope' with being in effect straight. If you care about homophobia, go rant about them.

But you don't care about homophobia, this is merely a desperate attempt to divert and stop a thread because its subject matter is inconvenient, and a hope that cancel culture thinking may help with this.

So having ensured this thread has no chance of actually talking about the op, lets think about cancel culture.

  1. This person has said something I don't like them saying
  2. This person has at some point said or done something I find smelly
  3. This person shall not exist and no one shall be allowed to listen to or agree with anything they say at any point ever regardless of evidence.

fgs my five year old has better reasoning skills than this. Cancel whoever you like, you enjoy yourself. But it's rather stupid to carry on like this about a woman whose career has been remarkable, and when you have absolutely nothing practical to say in response to the actual letter, just reasons why you won't tolerate the existence of the speaker.

Most of which are hyperbolic, highly dramatised and wildly inaccurate.

She's homophobic because she believes gay marriage "degrades" women, doesn't want gays to have families and believes gays should be thrown in jail for having consensual sex with 20 year olds.

I wonder if the noble Baroness proposed that straight people should be banned from marriage, having families and should be thrown in jail for having consensual sex with 20 year old what the reaction would be from this group...

And there have been posts on other threads addressing posters, including your’s, lack of understanding how good and robust laws are created.

Or perhaps you continue to ignore those and persist in doubling down.

Either way, love to know why you ignore that LGB lobby groups also had concerns at the time the Baroness voted against that wording of the bill.

I would also say that I believe she is entitled to her views but LGBT people are equally entitled to call her out on them and accurately label her a homophobe as a consequence.

Apart from voting history which you have twisted to suit your agenda and doesn’t seem to reflect reality, please post evidence to support your claim that Baroness Emma Nicholson ‘hates’ LGBT+ people.

or is this another thread of your unfounded claims?

"Apart from voting history". Well, I mean that is a pretty important indicator as to how a person feels.

Why does she believe that gay people should be thrown in jail for having consensual sex with 20 year olds but straight people should not be?

Could you explain that to me?
