Verso Books are breaking the ratio record

This independent publishing company thinks referring to Indian women as ‘womb carriers’ on Twitter is acceptable language to use when talking about women being forcibly sterilised. I think they’re about to break the internet. Piers Morgan and Andrew Doyle are on it.

It might be the straw that breaks this dehumanising trend’s back. Certainly worse than any other phrase I’ve come across.

Verso books should be utterly ashamed of themselves. I only have the very worst swear words for that abomination of a statement.

Rude.

EaselArt · 23/06/2022 14:10

What does ratioing mean?

Babdoc · 23/06/2022 14:12

Is there any way of displaying all the Twitter comments here on MN? The link only lets you read the first few before Twitter blocks them out with a demand that one signs up to keep reading.

achillestoes · 23/06/2022 14:12

The ratio is the X:Y of comments to likes.

Fucking hell.

achillestoes · 23/06/2022 14:13

Help them to understand, vipers.

EaselArt, it refers to the ratio between supportive and critical comments.
Getting “ratioed” means the vast majority were critical - or as MN would call it, getting one’s arse handed to one!

Unfortunately Twitter is awful for this and it's hard to get round.

One solution is to go via Nitter:

nitter.net/VersoBooks

Click sign up, and then close the window that follows. You have to do it more than once if you keep reading but it does work.

RocketPanda · 23/06/2022 14:17

My blood pressure is already up so I'm not going to even read the twitter thread.

I would, however, like a crochet reusable bag in the shape of a womb.

RocketPanda · 23/06/2022 14:19

@Babdoc click sign up and then just press X on the sign in screen and you can read the comments. That's how I do it in work 😉

achillestoes · 23/06/2022 14:19

Maybe they genuinely think body parts can be decanted into jars because something similar happened to them.

If my Tweets were public, I'd love to see what Triggernometry make of this.

that said, with Verso, I suspect it's deliberate.

Babdoc · 23/06/2022 14:25

Thanks, all. I looked via nitter, and some of the replies are priceless. I loved the womb with a view in a glass box, and the one with a permit for a concealed carry!

Nitter.net.

I look using this instead of having an account.

Probably best I don't have an account 😂

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 23/06/2022 14:32

“Our womb-carriers.”

Jesus Christ.

dolorsit · 23/06/2022 14:32

How does nitter work?

RogersOrganismicProcess · 23/06/2022 14:36

🎶Do your wombs hang low,
Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot,
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them over your shoulder,
Like a regimental soldier?
Do your wombs hang low? 🎶

Other lovely treats on their timeline include promoting an event where straight man Grace Lavery lectures gay men about being non-inclusive Bad Gays who don’t prioritise trans, and a look into “the sexualised nature of the father-daughter relationship” (the latter could be executed in a completely reasonable manner but in this context, from these people? Unlikely.)

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/06/2022 14:41

I think it might be native american women/first nations women meant. They were called "Indian" by officialdom at the time, hence Indian Health Service.

Anyway. Here is a screenshot for posterity.

I don’t understand how they don’t get that they’re just shrinking the pool of people who are prepared to agree with them. I saw a really sad thread the other day from a TRA who sounded despairing and so sad that more people aren’t prepared to stand with them about the egregious abuses of their freedom that are coming in right wing America. I felt honestly awful for them. But fucking hell, people, we cannot support this. Throw out the misogyny and queer theory and I’ll get on board (like I am now) with autonomy of the body.

Incredibly racist as well as misogynistic. Reducing Native American women to " womb carriers" is appalling!
