This ruling is actually coming out and saying what we all know to be true: transwomen are not women.

NiteLuxe · 19/06/2022 20:29

In a way it's a shame, once sports are sorted a lot of (not all) men are going to think the fight is over and move on.

Supersee · 19/06/2022 20:29

glowbabe · 19/06/2022 20:18

Can't see how they can stop them . They are now women . That's the whole point isn't it ? By not letting them compete in womens events that's like saying they are not real women ? God what a crazy world we live in .

They aren't women.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 19/06/2022 20:29

Sorry, that was in reply to Dreikanter (seem to have lost the quote)

mrshoho · 19/06/2022 20:35

👏 Excellent outcome. May this be the turning point for all sport.

turbonerd · 19/06/2022 20:35

Hurrah hurrah hurrah!
I also read an article in my country that the International Kayak society has done the same!
the article was about a TW who found this horribly unfair, even though they were provided with an Open category, so sulking and strops are happening. But yay!!

VestofAbsurdity · 19/06/2022 20:36

Dreikanter · 19/06/2022 19:46

It’s also pretty clear in the FINA athlete survey that both men’s and women’s competitions should be restricted to birth sex, with an additional open category added for competition.

From that graphic it looks like it was 'No' for a separate Open category?

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 19/06/2022 20:38

I saw this earlier and am really pleased.

Also saw this on Reddit and was pleasantly surprised by the comments. A lot on the side of common sense, even if they are (in the main) happy to use pronouns and say TWAW.

IOC... are you listening?

McDuffy · 19/06/2022 20:40

I think cricket and athletics already have "open" rather than "men's". The protected female category isn't, though Hmm

Dreikanter · 19/06/2022 20:40

PaleBlueMoonlight · 19/06/2022 20:27

Maybe, but would men really not be ok with that? Is the open category trying to be kind to transwomen and non-binary males who are triggered by the fact they are male and who could not therefore cope with being in a category labelled men's or gaining men's records (and who would therefore prefer open)? I suppose another reason (more likely) may be the risk that a womens and open category may diminish women's sports by suggesting that women have the option of competing in the open category (ie if they just tried a bit harder...).

Men’s, Women’s and Open categories would be fair. Transwomen won’t be competitive in the men’s category and are now barred from the women’s category. Plus all the NBs can enter the Open.

Plus I don’t see why men should give up their right to sex based records either.

BorisBooster · 19/06/2022 20:41

Hooray! About time.

I bet twitter will explode by toys being thrown out of the pram !

FINA is the IOC-recognised body for the regulation of aquatic sports.

MarshaBradyo · 19/06/2022 20:44

Tide’s turning finally

good news

Wanderingowl · 19/06/2022 20:44

I just listened to Davies on 5 Live. I literally laughed out loud when she credited Lia Thomas with having highlighted the unfairness and being the likely thing that set this new ruling in motion.

VestofAbsurdity · 19/06/2022 20:45

Put it this way, I question whether any of these athletes are actually trans. They've just seen a loophole that they can use to achieve success.

And to denigrate women.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 19/06/2022 20:47

Dreikanter · 19/06/2022 20:40

I agree, but even though fair, I just wonder whether the open category could ever be meaningful. The amount of investment to run a while separate category, but who would be competing in it? There are examples of transwomen and transmen continuing to compete in their sexed categories, so it would surely only be a minority who would enter "open".

Anyway, from what PP says it may be that an open category was rejected? I should maybe should read the source material!

ElephantsFart · 19/06/2022 20:47

It seems a fair way of doing things. Of course some won’t like it, as the decision implies that trans women’s biology is not female biology.

Dreikanter · 19/06/2022 20:49

VestofAbsurdity · 19/06/2022 20:36

Yes - that might be because athletes feel that competing as your natal sex is appropriate, or it might be that introducing a third category will either extend competition lengths or (more likely) reduce the time available for male and female events. Not all 50m / 800m / 1500m events are swim due to time constraints.

Indeed! Well, she wanted to make history....

Excellent news.

Were I a betting woman, I might put a tenner on Lia becoming Liam again within the next five years...

Igmum · 19/06/2022 21:13

At last. Well done FINA.

S/he is apparently still into women and hanging out with the lads, so I read somewhere..
