The Countess women's group in Ireland have found out that the words women/woman and female will be removed from the Maternity Protection Act 1994.

In The Irish Examiner today:

Alison O'Connor: Happily, the Government is rethinking this daft decision to erase women

Thanks for signposting that article @Genesis1v27
Good to see that there are more articles on this issue.

" Rights do not exist in isolation, they also compete. You cannot simply disappear the word ‘woman’ in order to accommodate what must be a handful of trans men, if even that, who give birth each year". Absolutely, Alison, it seems ridiculous that this has to be said.

" We know that trans people are particularly vulnerable. We must do all we can to protect them — but not at the expense of women".
I think this statement needs to be taken apart.
The phrase "trans people" covers such a wide wide range of individuals, some of who are particularly vulnerable; but not all are.
And, I see no equivalent concern for other vulnerable groups such as toddlers with developmental delays, people with progress neurological conditions, Travellers, etc.

I suppose it's if trans men give birth. By legal definition, if they've gone through all the legal steps, they would be men, which leaves them left out of a maternity act which only references "women". It's just a widening of scope that includes more people who need the rights in the Maternity Act

It is very unfortunate that one lie, made legal, then logically leads to more lies.

In England though there is a big exception to the logical consequences of the legal lie, which is that a trans man cannot inherit a family title and estate. A trans man cannot become a Catholic priest in Ireland or any where else, which contradicts the legal lie too.

So another exception should be removing the name for half the population because of a few women who identify as men but are so triggered by the words describing the very female functions they are carrying out - in spite of believing they are really men, and in spite of their feelings of beingtriggered by being female.

It is not only a general outrage to women and mothers, and an outrage to the logic of language, but also very short-sighted in terms of health:

We all know that isn't the real reason for wanting the word "woman" removed though....

If they can give birth, they've not gone through any steps other than saying "I feel like I'm a man now".

Self-indulgent twaddle. If you give birth, you are physically a woman.

How you live after that, and if you want to say you're a dad and call yourself Harry instead of Hannah, that's fine. But as far as the birth itself goes, you're female.
