The Countess women's group in Ireland have found out that the words women/woman and female will be removed from the Maternity Protection Act 1994.

This is the kernel of the problem. Even people who know about - and disapprove of - Lia Thomas seem unaware that Ireland has self ID. It won't impinge upon the national consciousness until some 6 footer weighing 15 stone appears in an inter County camogie team. With badly applied make up barely concealing his stubble.

Even then I think people will be just head in the sand...we are so bad at facing up to things, just shrug uncomfortably and say 'ah shure it'll be grand'....it's so bloody frustrating because things here could be so much better if people actually gave a shit. So much apathy.

Plus there is something about us doing things 'better' than the UK, so the fact that we brought this in before them will be seen as us being super progressive and liberal and look how great we are.

I have no confidence in the government to actually address this issue properly, and the media are totally captured. They will wait to see how this plays out in the UK and other places, and then about 10 years too late they will change this terrible law and say the same stuff like 'lesson's will be learned' blah blah blah.

yellowtwo · 06/06/2022 22:17

Thelnebriati
Is this legal because of self ID?
Not exactly because of self I.D. Any Legislation that will amend the Constitution needs to have a referendum, that's why there was a public vote on abortion, and it's why there was no vote on self ID-Self I.D wasn't in the Constitution. However, I've read that Women are referred to over 600 times in legislation, the Constitution and other acts, what is happening now is chipping away at any mention of Women.

I suppose it's if trans men give birth. By legal definition, if they've gone through all the legal steps, they would be men, which leaves them left out of a maternity act which only references "women". It's just a widening of scope that includes more people who need the rights in the Maternity Act

No, it isn’t “just a widening of scope”. If it was a widening of scope, it would be a case of referring to “women and trans men”. This movement is about the erasure of a particular group, i.e. women (you never find the same erasure being enacted on men).

Beowulfa · 07/06/2022 07:55

ReynaDotCom · 05/06/2022 21:17

But legally they are men. And this is something regarding law. Your personal opinion of what is and isn't a man doesn't match with what is written in law.

Is this the law that says that women can call themselves men, but cannot then become Catholic priests? What does that tell you about the law writers' knowledge of what men and women really are?

This very subject was covered by the Joe Duffy Lifeline yesterday and is the first topic on the podcast.

3timeslucky · 10/06/2022 16:18

And back on Liveline again today.

Sandra claims she was denied access to the National Women's Council of Ireland AGM today - was it because of advocacy group The Countess's stance on women's biology?

Roseglen84 · 10/06/2022 21:14

Thanks, I will have a listen to these tomorrow. As much as Joe Duffy annoys me, at least it is being discussed on national radio so people can hear the issues.

Genesis1v27 · 10/06/2022 22:43

The callers on the first of those programmes are excellent, on both sides. I don't hear Liveline too often, but Joe Duffy and his producers deserve credit for hosting a fair and impartial discussion.

MoreCraicPlease · 11/06/2022 22:29

I agree it was very sensitively handled.

Being discussed on Liveline again today!

Some great speakers on liveline today, Colette was one and there was a man at the beginning who was good too

The guy at the beginning from the football team was ridiculous - saying there's no problem if boys want to go into the girls changing rooms or on the girls teams. Kept saying 'of course we would allow them'...how nice for him to make that choice on behalf of teenage girls who most likely would feel really uncomfortable with this.

The phrase 'so open minded their brain fell out' comes to mind.

ohnoitsagruffalo · 13/06/2022 18:41

@Roseglen84 that man talking about the football changing rooms was on last week (Friday I think). He was infuriating! Today the man at the beginning of the programme was concerned with this language change and self id in general as he has a teenage daughter who he believes will be affected by these things. He asked a few times were the people who supported these changes happy that his daughter may have to change in changing rooms with a man. He also referenced the males in limerick womens prison. Made me think he had seen Helen stanislands question!

Over the past 3 programmes RTE 's Liveline has discussed this topic. All 3 programmes are linked above.
This is the Irish Times article on these programmes.

Abhannmor · 14/06/2022 10:00

I'm surprised an experienced journalist like Patsy McGarry would write such a completely tendendentious and one sided article. Just a series of self appointed spokes people having a meltdown about hate and prejudice they cannot actually point to. What Graham Linehan called 'theatrical ' accusations of bigotry. All topped off with veiled threats to the board of RTÉ. This fragile and vulnerable group seem to wield a hugely disproportionate amount of power. I hope the Times allows a right of reply.

Annasgirl · 14/06/2022 10:39

I read that article and decided that’s it, I’m finally canceling my IT subscription- the cost of living increase has made me look through all of my monthly subscriptions.

hate speech? But removing the word woman is not a problem? And I was infuriated when Ailbhe Smith conflated feminism and trans rights - I fought for my rights as a woman and I am not about to let them go without a fight.

it is so disheartening to see how the repeal group have been taken over by these people. How, after fighting for over 30 years on an issue that only exits because if biological women, have they then capitulated to a group who are even more misogynistic than those who inserted the 1983 amendment in the first place.

A right of reply is not encouraged by believers in gender ideology.
I expect RTE will be put under pressure to apologise. From the Lord Mayor of Dublin to Labour youth, Amnesty Ireland to the National Council for Women, open discussion appears to be considered hate speech.

One of the Transactivists on yesterday's programme could not see the problem with expanding the definition of the word woman to include biological men who identify as a woman.
I felt Brian's answer got it in a nutshell. Gender non conforming men do not expand the meaning of the word "woman", they expand the meaning of the word "man".

MoreCraicPlease · 14/06/2022 11:03

Wow at that Irish Times article.

Women’s rights subjugated, society aware but firmly looking elsewhere, people afraid to speak up. It’s the mother and baby homes all over again.

Despite the appalling fact that the Irish Congress for Civil Liberties do not want a civilised discussion on the definition of the word Woman, it appears they consider this hate speech 🙄, the responses are heartening.

Marblessolveeverything · 14/06/2022 15:28

Was there any consultation with women representative groups pre publishing the draft legislation.

In my head the most balanced, inclusive approach would be to leave woman/mother and add an additional descriptive word that covers all who are not /dont wish to be known as women.

What rationale was applied to have the word woman removed? - how is it offensive to anyone - not goading just learning and trying to engage with a teen boy who is as confused as me and terrified he is going to stick is size 11s in it in school anyday now!

Oh thanks, sorry I clicked on one of the links and must have listened to the wrong one. Will check out the others.

I keep thinking, as bas as it is, at least it being talked about more now versus even a year or two ago. They can't keep a lid on this forever, people are going to realise the implications of this stupid law eventually.

Roseglen84 · 14/06/2022 16:31

*bad, not bas - obviously!
