The Countess women's group in Ireland have found out that the words women/woman and female will be removed from the Maternity Protection Act 1994.

I'm surprised an experienced journalist like Patsy McGarry would write such a completely tendendentious and one sided article. Just a series of self appointed spokes people having a meltdown about hate and prejudice they cannot actually point to. What Graham Linehan called 'theatrical ' accusations of bigotry. All topped off with veiled threats to the board of RTÉ. This fragile and vulnerable group seem to wield a hugely disproportionate amount of power. I hope the Times allows a right of reply.

Yes, exactly - the usual frothing nonsense. Yet again any logical discussion is immediately shouted down as transphobia. Can people not see how ridiculous this is? And of course, they have quotes from Belongto and TENI but nothing much from anyone else. Talk about one sided.

That isn't journalism, it's agenda pushing.

Ramayquaza · 14/06/2022 16:38

Slightly OT, but it's interesting to me that the IT's religious affairs correspondent is the one covering this

ohnoitsagruffalo · 14/06/2022 17:56

I thought the same, delighted its being talked about!

ohnoitsagruffalo · 14/06/2022 17:57

Sorry I was referring to Roseglen comment re talking about this in the media now whereas before there was very little about it

Dublin Pride are very very offended by women being heard.

What the fuck? Talk about a massive over-reaction. So any discussion is not allowed now. Are we supposed to bow down to totalitarian demands like this?

I really hope that RTÉ don't just give in to totally ridiculous pandering. Surely this will just show ordinary people how pathetic this all is - a demand to never speak, or question, or query anything...it's just complete bollocks!

Where are the grown ups when you need them?

irishfeminist · 14/06/2022 22:13

That Patsy McGarry piece was basically a press release for that new trans lobby group. Isn't he meant to be a journalist??

When you think of the success that the've had in Ireland, they've managed to get almost all the SU's to drop the Irish Times. They're very good at getting the media to self censor on this topic, the journal has their comments section closed when they reported on it.

elgreco · 14/06/2022 23:40

Hopefully this will open a few eyes. The Journal allows "whatabout the MEN" comments every time they report on violence against women. They allow comments on immigration which can sometimes be dodgy. But not this subject...I wonder why?

miri1985 · 15/06/2022 01:29

Letters to the ed about "woman" being removed from the Maternity Bill has started www.irishtimes.com/opinion/letters/2022/06/15/amendments-to-the-maternity-protection-act/

Unfortunately don't think any media organisation in Ireland has the guts to start asking politicans what is a woman

ohnoitsagruffalo · 15/06/2022 07:45

Thats a well written letter although I wish she hadn't called herself cis.

Reading this article in the Irish Times "Dublin Pride ends RTÉ media partnership over ‘anti-trans rhetoric" " reminds me of a toddler throwing their dummy out of the cot.

I've listened to some of the Joe Duffy stuff (which is on the radio at a time when most people are at work).
I'm pro-human rights in every form, and believe that how we treat the most vulnerable is a reflection of who we really are.
The reaction of Dublin Pride prompts me to say "cop on".

I work with truly vulnerable children, including some who are on 24hour monitoring for seizure activity, home oxygen, who require a specialised taxi to get to school, need a positioning system to prevent hip dislocation during sleep. I also work with people who identify as transgender and they are provided with affirming, careful and sensitive support.

This isn't a game of "who is the most vulnerable?" but like really? Cop on.
Someone needs to be an adult here, and Dublin Pride aren't meeting the criteria at the moment.

ohnoitsagruffalo · 15/06/2022 10:30

Claire Byrne just read out a statement from RTE (can't find it online yet) in response to Dublin Pride statement, it sounds like they are not backing down on "public discussion" so hopefully the discussion continues!

I hope that they discuss this toys out of pram reaction on Liveline today! If they don't I can certainly see Niall Boylan discussing it on Classic Hits. I know he's a massive professional shit stirrer, but I also believe he's genuinely pretty fucked off with the wording of the maternity act. He was born in a Mother and Baby home and sold at 18 months to his adoptive parents while his mother was sent out to clean not knowing she wouldn't see him again until he found her as an adult. So I think he knows what a mother and woman is.

RedLemonade · 15/06/2022 13:41

I found the brief piece on this on Morning Ireland this morning so enraging. They didn’t even touch on the content of the discussions on Live Line that triggered this decision by Pride- just dwelt on the “hurt” it caused.

They’ve just done a piece on on the Lunchtime news prog which did at least mention the erasure of the term “mother” from maternity legislation.

Thank God RTE are sticking to their “difficult discussions should still be had” mandate… for now.

I’m so sick of this shit. I’m a doctor and I will never stop using the words woman and mother. This is the hill I am prepared to die on.

ohnoitsagruffalo · 15/06/2022 13:43

Thank you! They've mentioned it since on the news at 1 but they didn't go into it too much, said no speaker from rte was available to discuss! I won't be able to listen to much of liveline but I hope the discussion continues!

So glad there are other Irish women who feel as I do btw! It sometimes feels like I'm the only one

TDs to grill RTÉ bosses after Dublin Pride drops media partnership over ‘anti-trans’ discussions on Liveline

Independent senator Sharon Keogan said the Liveline programme is a “public sounding board for national issues”.

She said: “Women told their stories about cervical cancers/menopause/M&B homes/domestic violence & other women's issue. When the govt try 2 erase the word 'women' from legislation, women who speak out are labelled. #FreeSpeech.”

worriedatthistime · 15/06/2022 13:51

Surely it should say biological women as only they can give birth
You can be a gender you choose but biologically you are still male or female , especially if able to have a baby and give birth
Biological sex and gender to me are different

www.independent.ie/irish-news/tds-to-grill-rte-bosses-after-dublin-pride-drops-media-partnership-over-anti-trans-discussions-on-liveline-41755471.html

"RTÉ is set to be hauled before the Oireachtas Media and Culture Committee after Dublin Pride severed its ties with the State broadcaster over what the campaign group described as “anti-trans” discussions on Joe Duffy’s Liveline programme.

TDs and Senators on the Dáil committee this morning agreed to invite RTÉ bosses to appear before it in the coming weeks to discuss its coverage of transgender issues."

You aren't the only one. I haven't read most of this thread but there are not only lots of posters on this boards.ie thread who feel similar, but last I looked the distribution of "thanks" on the posts leans heavily to one side.
