"Blocklist of transphobic people in publishing"

This is horrendous. I think it's come off the back of some discussions about Rachel Rooney earlier this week.

Hello everyone - we have now created a blocklist of transphobic people in the publishing industry. It will probably need to be regularly updated, but we hope that it can provide more safety to the people who need it. DM us if you'd like a copy.

The accounts on the list are people who have liked, retweeted or followed transphobic posts/accounts aimed at people in the publishing industry in the past week. If you believe that we've made a mistake somewhere, feel free to tell us.

Young Refuseniks
The people on the list range from small, unpublished authors to popular writers and people who work for publishing houses with large followings. The list is currently 7 pages long.

They really are an obnoxious bunch of bullies

Safety

From people who don't follow the same ideology, I assume?

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2022 16:36

Someone needs to read up on the Cultural Revolution and the McCarthy trials. And Salem for that matter. Shit even the Nazis if I want to invoke Godwins Law.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 16:44

Can I volunteer to have my name added to it?

Thelnebriati · 01/06/2022 16:53

I look forward to the meltdown when we start sharing the list to support the people on it.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 01/06/2022 16:59

In another tweet they're admonishing those of their followers who are still following an "NYT best selling writer" who apparently said something they don't like.

Who the hell do they think they are to tell people what to do? Such arrogance, such thought control, trying to narrow people's worlds so they don't see anything that might make them think differently.

And of course someone has replied, apologising in case they're inadvertently following this unnamed blacklisted writer.

Fenlandia · 01/06/2022 16:59

Can they even hear themselves? Blacklists for wrongthink have destroyed lives (eg McCarthyism, construction industry)

Boiledbeetle · 01/06/2022 17:06

Can I ask those of you much more well informed: Have they actually started burning books yet? And if not I presume that will be next

Floralorial · 01/06/2022 17:15

I saw this on Twitter and was idly musing about how it's presumably highly defamatory. They are calling individuals transphobic and blacklisting them, which is likely to have economic repercussions, and admit in cases it may simply be on the basis of who those individuals "follow" on Twitter. I follow many people, for many reasons on Twitter, some of whom I agree with on things, others who I don't. Ironically because I like seeing many different viewpoints!

Sighs heavily.

Thanks for that.

God it's depressing.

Precisely. It employs fear, ostracism and silencing in exactly the same manner. Not sure what the proper response is. The angry part of me wants to construct identical block lists for misogynists in publishing which would be most of the gender identity lot.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2022 17:29

They don't need to be burning books so much as reading books. Preferably history books. Then philosophy, logic, politics and any fiction like Orwell or any SciFi which addresses dictatorship. Clockwork Orange?

A How Not To Be A Little Arsehole reading list.

I'm happy to read anything of theirs!

tabbycatstripy · 01/06/2022 18:06

Such bad behaviour. Belief is a protected characteristic so I guess any publisher or agent making decisions using this list (or even holding it from a GDPR perspective) wants to be sued.

LeniGray · 01/06/2022 18:19

This is depressing, I despise bullies. It’s the reason I will never go on Twitter, it’s a cesspit.

This cheered me a little this week though - not a fan of Atwood myself, but I like the concept 🔥

So, they are publishing a shopping list of authors for me to go out of my way to buy?
You can't cancel authors anymore now it's so easy to go indie.

There are more people who know what sex is & buy books, than there are hysterical loons who want to shut the world down because someone disagreed with them about one thing ever.

The Trans movement seems to be a never ending spew of hate & incitement to damage everyone & everything that isn't them.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 01/06/2022 19:04

Clockwork Orange?

Fahrenheit 451 more like

'Refuseniks'Hmm

More appropriation of the suffering of a completely unrelated group.

What have these people been refused? Their rights to openly practice their beliefs, to dress according to the stereotypes of their beliefs, to leave the country without any threat of harm to them or to their families, and to return in the same way, are not refused. On the contrary, their rights to freedom of belief are explicitly protected in law.

TheJubileeLion · 01/06/2022 20:26

If they're planning to list everyone in publishing who's followed or liked a post by JK Rowling they're going to need a bigger boat.

Lostillusions · 01/06/2022 20:38

I saw this today, courtesy of the wonderful Lissa Evans. It's so sinister, so Orwellian, and what is so depressing is seeing various authors and agents cheering them on.

ChagSameachDoreen · 01/06/2022 21:05

I will absolutely be on that list!
