How to challenge drag queen story time

Sorcha69 · 26/05/2022 20:21

My local library is going to be doing this and I would like some pointers on how to challenge this.
How have others approached this?
Thanks

Musomama1
I think it represents LGBT as much as female strippers represent women.
Nice one, Musomama1! Succinct. I'll be borrowing it, thank youSmile

Could I please suggest you don't?

She's not going to send them threats, is she? She's politely going to send an email. This is a zombie thread so it's moot anyway.

Christinapple · 12/06/2024 14:03

Sorry didn't realise this was from 2022, just saw the post above mine was made today.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/06/2024 14:07

@FrancescaContini he accused mumsnet of wanting to crucify him based on calling that out, because someone said something like "anyone else would be crucified" if they used ADHD in that way 🙄

Could I please suggest you don't?

No, you couldn't. Libraries are no place for this (is anywhere?) and people are free to express their objections to the libraries if they want to.

I know this is an old thread, but seriously, the cheek of asking a random stranger not to object to this shite...

Just did a quick search and sadly just this weekend a b*mb threat was made towards a library.

2 points
1st this thread is 2 years old so any performances will have come and gone.
2nd I hardly think an American incident has any relevance to the UK, have you got anything from this contry rather than another continent

I told my local women's charity that I wasn't attending as I didn't think a drag queen was suitable for very young children (I support them financially) and got a snippy reply back that feminism was all about women's rights to choose Hmm I had framed it nicely and said I wanted to tell them rather than just not show up, so they knew the reason. Won't bother donating again.

But you had exercised a 'woman's right to choose' by saying you were not going. How was the comment anything to do with drag queens - who are men? Are they saying they have a right to choose? But that's a pointless thing to say since you aren't stopping them going to the event.
And the phrase 'a woman's right to choose' has been stretched to cover prostitution (it's her choice of work) and pornography (her choice and empowering) - essentially using 'choice' to cover anything men would like women to do for them.

Slothtoes · 12/06/2024 17:09

Sorry if I did the wrong thing in returning to this thread today but my point in doing so is that these performances haven’t at all gone away since this thread was started and they are being funded by the arts council which is a taxpayer funded body in the UK, for the posters who are not in the UK.
And obviously nobody should be making bomb threats for fucks sake. Even in another continent to the one I was posting about. It’s perfectly possible to object to things without making any kind of threats to anyone (do I really have to point this out?)

How about simply on cost?

What is the point of shelling out for a drag queen when a librarian or a volunteer could read the books?

The make up alone must be pricey

Better still, persuade women not to take their children to the reading.

Rightsraptor · 13/06/2024 07:32

Probably the most effective thing would be to boycott these gross events, but that means the Cool Mummies too, so that probably won't happen.

Edited

Did they have any drag kings then? Women and all that?

MarieDeGournay · 13/06/2024 10:54

Sorry for repeating myself, I make this point every time drag appears in threads:

As well as all the valid criticism of drag queens as child entertainers, the conflation of 'drag' with 'gay', as seen in Pride events/ads etc, presents a false idea to young people who are questioning their sexuality.

If you're a boy not into glitter/sequins/make-up/false boobs/offensive nicknames, well maybe you're not gay after all...

If you're a girl fleeing the whole glitter/sequin/make-up/girly princess thing, where do you turn for a role model of gayness?

HoneyButterPopcorn · 13/06/2024 12:30

Indeed. They are pushing ‘acceptance’ of drag acts. Because I don’t know a single gay (man or woman) who wears such a costume to visit the doctors, pop to the shops, work in the bank…

Peskysquirrel · 13/06/2024 15:06

No one should be attacked in a possible homophobic hate crime.

Thank you for once again highlighting male violence @Christinapple.
On here and on the Emmerdale thread you are really doing our job for us.

Christinapple · 13/06/2024 16:51

Good so we all acknowledge homophobic and transphobic hate are problems that can lead to violence and need addressed.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/06/2024 17:44

Yes, I'm sure we can all agree on that @Christinapple

HoneyButterPopcorn · 13/06/2024 17:52

Male on male violence is also an issue. Of course male on female violence is a large problem.

Maybe activist will start addressing macho culture?
