Despite the hatred and death threats, despite giving so much of it away and being sidelined by Hollywood and all the insults, according to the Times annual Rich List JKR's wealth increased by £30 million last year. Well done, Jo.

Hmmmm as a feminist I assume I buy knickers in my house, Gryffindor, not DH's Hufflepuff, right? No pandering.

There are way more parents out there who care more about getting their children into reading than listening to trans activists.

FeminismAndCake · 21/05/2022 00:21

I follow a cake decorating facebook group. Harry Potter themed cakes are still really popular

I also suspect that the buying power of trans activists is lower than for the general population. Those I’ve interacted with don’t tend to be doing very well in life.

I have MS. The Strike books are enjoyable reading. They aren't great literature but they're a really engrossing read. Both my dc have loved HP. I'm grateful she does what she does.

SmiledWtherisingsun · 21/05/2022 00:47

🙌👍🤸🏿‍♀️

calmlakes · 21/05/2022 01:11

Good for her.🙂

JustSpeculation · 21/05/2022 07:26

There are better stylists than JKR but she's become a very competent writer and has always been a truly great storyteller.

Classic 😂

sweetgrapes · 22/05/2022 14:55

Because she's that rare person of the billionaire class who pays her dues. Unlike others with non dom status and off shore accounts.

A fair cut of the money will find it's way to the taxman and fund stuff that benefits us all.

And please don't tell me what to think.

I scanned the list quickly this year looking for JKR (her photo was shown so I knew she's be in there somewhere). So many of these phenomenally wealthy people are male, and so many of them have inherited family wealth and businesses or are hedge fund managers and investors etc. So few are creatives. I think JKR and Paul McCartney are the only two I spotted. They both come from ordinary backgrounds and both have made their millions harmlessly giving people around the world pleasure. Hats off to them.

This!!

TeiTetua · 22/05/2022 15:26

Well, if JKR is being boycotted on account of her cruel TERFy opinions, at least she has the comfort of "crying all the way to the bank".

Or maybe we're celebrating the phenomenal success of a woman. A woman who unlike many wealthy people pays her taxes and gives huge amounts of money to the charity she set up that supports women and children.
You might not like her views and opinions on trans people, but a lot of people - including some trans people - agree. It's not as binary as you're suggesting.
Trying to deflect any comment to reframe it as people not addressing the 'real' issues is a tired tactic that cuts no ice on this forum.
And yeah, don't tell me what to do either.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/05/2022 17:53

Why are we celebrating a woman increasing her wealth by 30million and gloating about it to our "enemies"? on fucking mumsnet. how many people here have said they're struggling to keep the lights on and feed their kids?

In one year in 2011, she gave away 16% of her wealth $160 million. Her charity Lumos does still more. And it's all by the sweat of her brow, from abused, poor single mum. Of course she should be celebrated. There are many more children eating today because of her and there will be in the future. Plus the reluctant readers. Of whom I imagine there are many fewer today than there were before.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/05/2022 17:53

joke. graham linehan was right this is a hate group.

Jokes are funny.

darlingdodo · 22/05/2022 17:59

Wineislife2, you do know who Graham Linehan is, don't you, and his views on how tras are adversely impacting the safeguarding of women and girls? Grin

calmlakes · 22/05/2022 18:06

If all the super wealthy in the UK behaved like JKR society would not only be a much better place but a much better funded place.
All people who are struggling to cover their costs should hope that JKR gets more wealthy because unlike many others she pays her taxes.

U OK hun?

wonderstuff · 22/05/2022 18:08

Fantastic. I love HP, the section devoted to it at Universal Orlando is something else. My mum wrote to her expressing support when the whole TRA thing started to blow up and her people wrote a lovely letter back. She seems to really care deeply about what she does and the world generally. Very impressive woman.

I think the boycotting is grossly exaggerated. The vast majority of people aren't on Twitter or TikTok, and won't see all the witch-hunting and tantrumming, and will continue to consume Harry Potter and Strike. As is quite obvious from her income.

Unfortunately TRAs seem to think they are which is why they have this distorted view that practically everyone bar 6 GC women does agree with them and will do their bidding.

JacquelineCarlyle · 22/05/2022 19:04

Phenomenal - well done Jo!
