Ben Cohen has told her she's wrong. She's told him she doesn't care what he thinks. Grin

Good on RR. She's dealt with an awful lot of shit already, I'm sad to know that more is coming her way but I do admire her courage.

That India Willoughby tweet is horrendous, as an aside. Is that legally actionable? Saying JKR's charity work counts for nothing because Jimmy Saville hid his sexual abuse behind charity work - is that not drawing a comparison between JKR and Saville?
I know JK normally rises above but I'd be on to my lawyers if that was me.

Didn’t a certain Joe 90 lookalike and non practicing Doctor make a similar comparison?

Clymene · 15/05/2022 18:38

I think you're right @Deliriumoftheendless

And what's happened to Harrop since he had his medical licence suspended? He's gone awfully quiet

In The Independent Rachael is saying that JK Rowling is being attacked because she defended Jews.

So she's saying that JKR isn't being attacked by TRA's but by anti-semites?

I'm confused.

I think she's saying that on the Venn diagram of Lefty Anti-Semite and Lefty TRAs, there is a significant overlap, and therefore JKR has had double the target on her back.

Yes, thanks, I think that it was him. I thought someone had but couldn't recall the details.

I think a lot of people are using “trans rights” as a vehicle to express older grievances with greater impunity. Rosie Duffield says it’s the same people coming for her now as it was when she criticised anti-semitism in the Labour Party. Joanna Cherry gets abuse from a lot of the people who disagreed with her stance on Scottish independence (and I suspect this is the case forJKR too, although different people obviously) Graham Linehan says that the worst for him are those from an obsessive Chris Morris fandom that put a target on his back years ago (for what reason I don’t know!)

Rachel riley must be brave. My guess is she has read about this so is going in informed. Thay makes it less likely she'll back track. She obviously respects jkr and will have thought 'what's this about?' when it all kicked off. Plus she knows what online abuse is, has seen what jkr received for getting involved, so won't just be blundering in.

In her tweets since the article she is mainly standing up for Jkr's right to speak, and pointing out that the accounts who abused jkr for standing up against antisemitism are often the same ones who abuse her for her stance on womens rights.

But she also said, in a thread responding to India W:

"I think sometimes there is a conflict between women’s rights and trans rights, and there should room to discuss these things without being called a bigot, or without being called an extremist (for both sides)."

I completely agree with this.

I don't follow. Do you mean alot of glinner's work is recycled from dwindled and Chris Morris mentions it?

Manderleyagain · 15/05/2022 23:06

Not dwindled, Seinfeld! Really odd auto correct there.

SpindleInTheWind · 15/05/2022 23:22

Father Jack is plagiarisd from Seinfeld? Wow, who knew.

Comedy nerds don’t sound like much fun, actually.

Emma Nicholson seems to think so. It is quite a poisonous tweet , seeming to smear JKR because , like Savile , she was raised as a Catholic. And trying to drive a wedge between Jews and Catholics. It is a very serious, even dangerous accusation.

I'm 99.9% sure that JKR has never been a Catholic, culturally or otherwise. I have read interviews where she's talked about having sometimes felt drawn towards Christianity despite not having been brought up with much religion, and that she is conscious of some Christian inspiration in her books. Sort of an ambivalent-to-fond cultural Christian, of the Protestant variety. Apologies if I am wrong there.

I do note, though, that TRAs seem quite happy to use Catholic as a term of abuse. I remember Dr Harrop or his buddy calling Caroline Farrow a "Catholic cunt". Not sure how this isn't immediately recognised as hate speech.
