Matt Walsh, the right wing Catholic who is against abortion and yoga (I'm just getting in all the reasons to not 'align' with him in advance, if that's your thing) has released the trailer for his documentary.

It looks hilarious and amazing;

What's he got against yoga?

I think I might give it a miss, just the trailer made me sad and angry. I hope it does well. I hope it peaks a few people, a lot of people.

ChopinBoard · 14/05/2022 18:54

This looks good, I'll definitely watch it

MagnoliaTaint · 14/05/2022 18:56

We had parents at our school who objected to yoga due to their Christian beliefs.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/05/2022 18:59

Downward bad-dog!

@IcakethereforeIam If he's particularly religous, he won't be doing yoga. A lot of people see it as a physical practice with a few harmless 'OMs' and meditating, but yoga, as you probably know, derives and contains spiritual components which are not compatible with Catholicism or Christianity. They view it as akin tp black magic or a gateway to devil practices.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/05/2022 19:14

Thank you for the explanation @EarthSight and @MagnoliaTaint. I suppose at least he's consistent.

This is why Matt Walsh and his ilk alarm me. Our interests might align in this one area but he brings his own issues. Like the frog and the scorpion, but this scorpion can swim.

EarthSight · 14/05/2022 19:30

@IcakethereforeIam Yes, unfortunately. Matt Walsh and many like him all of a sudden care about women's rights.....but what's underpinning that might be very different form what what underpins the thoughts and feelings of most women's rights campaigners (who actually deeply care about women, minus any religious motivations).

Some right wing men are motivated by a patriarchal attitudes or sense of ownership over their wives and daughters. They like everything orderly and in its place......and probably prefer that place for women to be mainly in the home. Some have issues with gender non-conformity as it makes them feel uncomfortable. It might even go against their religious beliefs.

I'm mainly pointing this out to readers on here who might not think we're aware of these issues. We are aware of them, and many if not most of us are not comfortable at the idea that the other main people being very critical and vocal about this issue are people who have beliefs we might find problematic with regards to women's rights.

Well done him though for making this documentary. I hope it's good or amusing to watch.

Good points EarthSight.

According to Matt Walsh the answer to ‘what is a woman?’ would be someone of the sex who doesn’t have the right to bodily autonomy. I’m sure there will be good content within this programme but I just know his arrogant, pompous tone will annoy the shit out of me.

DaisiesandButtercups · 14/05/2022 20:06

I look forward to watching this. I am now reading, watching and listening to all sorts of voices I previously would have blocked out due to disagreements on a variety of issues. I find I am much more open to people I previously would written off and seeing common ground and shared humanity where I might not have before. Thanks to the taking over of my left leaning bubbles by queer theory and gender identity ideology I have had quite an epiphany about how closed and prejudiced, even disparaging I was becoming to anyone outside of that bubble.

I will be interested to hear his perspectives and those of his interviewees. I am curious to know where I would be in agreement with him and where I wouldn’t.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/05/2022 20:29

Strange bedfellows indeed.

JoodyBlue · 14/05/2022 20:43

I agree with @DaisiesandButtercups . My approach now (and always really) is to look at the coherence of arguments and issues on a case by case basis. If we don't do that we deny people the liberty to be nuanced in all areas of their life. In other words grown up. I expect I would disagree vehemently with MW on the issue of abortion. But we're not talking about that here.

Muminabun · 14/05/2022 20:49

I don’t agree with everything he says. His comments about Simone biles were knobbish and he is a bit thick sometimes but atleast he has a sense of humour. The interesting thing about him is his way of protesting. He is very funny and concise and totally unafraid. Is protest at the school board meeting was very strong I thought. It’s like he is undauntedly honest and truthful.

BootsAndRoots · 14/05/2022 20:49

You should listen to Simon Fanshawe's recent interview with Spiked. He said that in the Suffragette movement women with different political viewpoints (some left, some right) came together to fight for women's rights. He said that Stonewall in the 80s had people of all different political viewpoints fighting for a common cause.

People today seem to be particularly funny over who is fighting for a particular cause. It seems like many on this site only want left wing politicians who write for the Guardian to support their cause, otherwise they'd rather not have the help.

NotBadConsidering · 14/05/2022 23:00

It looks excellent! If this thread is going to go round and round in the same circles about how it’s apparently not possible to agree with Walsh because of his other views I’m happy to take part. It’s all so boring and childish though, the left wing/right wing purity spiral discussion has been done multiple times.

nolongersurprised · 14/05/2022 23:23

This concept that if you agree with someone about something you are now “aligned” with him is very tiresome.

I like Matt Walsh, I think he’s funny and effective. The trailer looks funny and effective as well.

Liking Matt Walsh hasn’t changed my view on abortion, because I am an adult and I am secure in my beliefs.

FemaleAndLearning · 14/05/2022 23:43

Looking forward to this on 1st June. I think it will be one of those films that will leave a lot of people saying WHAT NOW. I do find him funny how he reacts to the gender stuff. He has this very dry and level approach which makes it funny.

I think it will also be great to see so many people unable to define a woman so by default unable to define a man. However I imagine it will leave me angry and frustrated too!

I'm happy that the idea we don't know what a woman is reaching the general public.☀️

SeldomHere · 15/05/2022 00:01

Stay tuned for his next bit, "What is Marriage?"

IcakethereforeIam · 15/05/2022 00:02

I suppose one reason I'm concerned might be because of optimism. I can see when this is all behind us and the future will throw up new, the same old, problems. I hope I'm no purist, but I understand me giving that impression. Max Walsh is a bit of a curate's egg, I've watched him on YouTube and admire his clarity. Though he can make me cringe.

nolongersurprised · 15/05/2022 01:12

Really interesting to see Marci Bowers in that clip as well. Bowers is concerned about puberty blocked children (boys, really) not having sexual function as adults.

Given that Bowers is a trans woman and a surgeon who performs vaginoplasties, including that of Jazz Jennings, I think this shows integrity. It’s rare for surgeons to admit they’ve got things wrong and no doubt Bowers will get accused of transphobia (yawn) and being “aligned” with Walsh, but it’s an important message that parents need to be aware of.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 15/05/2022 07:47

If you deny MW the chance to speak on this issue because you disagree with him on other matters, it is no different TRAs denying Kathleen Stock her job because they disagreed with her views on sex. Just saying.

AlisonDonut · 15/05/2022 07:55

When did it become law to only be able to like/view/listen to people after you have investigated their whole history and agree 100% with everything they think, did and do?

tilder · 15/05/2022 08:04

There is a difference between GC, misogyny and transphobia. Personally I'm GC and find the other two abhorrent.

Individuals may well know how to define a woman. Their reason for doing so, how and why can be very different.

I struggle to see how this person is helpful to women.

Not sure there is a law on that?

It's pretty reasonable for some to want to listen and some not to. Am sure there are reasons on both sides as to why.

NonnyMouse1337 · 15/05/2022 08:18

Gender ideology will be stopped only when a fairly large segment of the population decides to push back. For that to happen, various demographics need to become aware of the issues. And different people from different parts of the political and cultural spheres will be better suited to engage with such demographics.

Matt Walsh will appeal to a certain type of religiously conservative demographic. I don't understand why this causes such hand wringing. People don't tend to engage with an issue unless it resonates with them on some personal level.

Anyway, I'll watch the documentary because it looks like it might be entertaining and cringe inducing.

I'm an atheist and against yoga too 😂
Well I don't care if other people indulge in it, but it doesn't appeal to me because of its very close connection with Hinduism. I like my exercises to be non-religious. 😆
