SOMERVILLE – A transgender woman was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison for forcing the 7-year-old daughter she fathered to participate in child pornography.

Marina Volz, 32, of Franklin, was sentenced, along with three others, by Superior Court Judge Peter Tober for their roles in running a child pornography production company in their Coburn Lane home in Franklin Township.

Also sentenced Friday were Ashley D. Romero, 28, formerly known as Adam Romero, Sean Allen, 54, and Dulcinea Gnecco, 21.

Volz, Romero and Allen operated what they described as a “family-owned transgender pornography production studio specializing in amateur, BDSM and taboo fetish content” from the residence.

Romero and Allen jointly sexually assaulted the child and filmed the assault, the video of which was recovered from multiple electronic items within the home. The search of the electronic devices revealed multiple text messages and other electronic communications among Volz, Romero, Allen and third parties discussing the sexual assault of the child.

The New York Post reported that Volz was “formerly known as Matthew” at the time of the arrest. They’ve not - yet - reported on the sentencing.

How can the come to the conclusion that he is not a sexually violent predator when he abducted his own daughter and raped her for the entertainment of others?

The poor child, I hope she is getting the resources and support she needs to get her life back together.

I hope the little girl goes to a new family where she can get a lot of help and recover from this. Although really there’s often no recovery. The victim always serves a life sentence.

I think it was a good choice to use ‘she fathered’ in the title. It would have been all too easy and much more clear to write ‘her daughter’ but by using such an awkward sentence it draws attention to the fact that this is a man committing a male crime who just likes to be called a woman.

Oh, I see she’s gone to relatives/grandma. Well I hope they’re good people and are ready to care for her well.

I rather liked the headline, I imagined the writer as a GC journalists who has to say "woman" and "she" nonetheless determined to convey the reality.

That poor girl. It sounds as though she’s been adopted by her grandmother who from her statement has no difficulty saying what these men really are.

Yes. It's an exceedingly flattering photo, and I'm wondering where they got it from. Other photos of Volz do not look anything like that one.

I see what you mean. But it could be a poor photo. Journalists have gone to some effort to dig up previous names for Volz and Romero, so the absence of a previously-known-as for Gnecco implies female to me.
Also I'm reluctant to risk overcompensating for previous deceitful journalism by assuming all sex offenders are male. About 1% of sex offenders are female, and this situation could fit female pattern sexual offending: typically the accomplice to a male, often a much older one, but not the instigator.

So I got into an argument about this on Reddit (I know, I know) and apparently the reason journalists should not refer to the criminal as male or transgender when reporting this story is because it makes transgender people look bad, which of course is the worst thing about the whole sickening event. NATALT if you were.

Is it just me, or are there a disproportionately high number of sexual crimes committed by trans people? Are there any stats on trans crimes?

There is an underlying belief there, on their part, that rape and sexual abuse is just something that happens, and the only thing that matters is how the rest of us respond to it, e.g. by signalling that our willingness to facilitate other people's identities is never conditional, and by committing to never disclose people's birthnames.

Well, bugger that. If it is truly so awful to be 'deadnamed', then I hope the prospect of it discourages potential rapists, who might otherwise commit atrocities as vile as those committed by Volz, formerly known as Matthew Volz, and Romero, formerly known as Adam Romero. Because the prospect of serving a prison sentence in a women's jail clearly isn't going to discourage rapists!

It is a lot of cognitive effort for us to remember other people's preferred pronouns when they don't accord with a lifetime of neurolinguistic programming. I think it's harder than learning to refer to all the Queen's sons as His Royal Highness at all times, and I note that no-one makes me do that. They especially don't make me do that for Prince Andrew! So why should we be accepting of this burden on us for these two males.

I think it must be as I suggested above: they know that these things Never Happen; so how could they possibly discuss this thing that Never Happened?

When talking about language not reflecting reality, I would also mention "child porn" here. This term is absolutely abhorrent to me and should also be named as what it is - child abuse.
