He is launching an inquiry into the treatment of children and is concerned that other issues are ignored once gender identity is mentioned.

It looks like things are changing!

Quote in the Observer article from Lui Asquith of Mermaids

Possibly the last time we'll hear from Lui as it appears their job is being advertised and their twitter account gone.

Yeah, I'd be getting the hell out of Dodge too!

The Stonewall quote is worth breaking down:

"A spokesperson from the charity Stonewall said: “What is important is that children and young people are listened to and that they are at the heart of decision-making, supported by their families and clinicians."

  • hard to disagree

"These treatments must be based on the best possible data"

  • that seems to be a new direction from them. One that points to facts. Does this thread continue? No.

"and draw from global medical expertise and consensus rather than rhetoric or fearmongering.

  • but the problem here is that the affirmation model has been the global approach. So we are not likely to get "the best possible data" from other countries. So we need Javid to do what he's said which is to access the data we do have and check it and put the jigsaw together.

"The Cass review is an in-depth, expert-led review that is already well under way and due to report later in the year"

  • previously it was this summer. Have they got an inside track they should not have alluded to? Or are they hoping for a delay?

"and so an additional review would be an unnecessary, kneejerk intervention.”"

  • they just seemingly advocated the "best possible data", yet here, getting that information is "kneejerk".
AlisonDonut · 24/04/2022 16:57

I just can't see why they are upset, SURELY they would also want the investigation to happen to prove just what excellent outcomes there are from the treatment they advise?

Right?

WhiteFire · 24/04/2022 16:58

That is a ridiculous statement from Labour, however it's just the usual fence sitting opinion of no substance. A statement about ensuring high quality care and reflecting on the underfunded CAMHS service when have been more appropriate than waffling about culture Wats and distraction.

tabbycatstripy · 24/04/2022 17:02

‘hard to disagree’

It’s not hard to disagree. They don’t mean ‘listen’ to the child. Of course we all know it’s important that a child is listened to.

That doesn’t mean upholding the child’s erroneous beliefs. It means listening, engaging and gently correcting them.

Kid thinks they were born in wrong body.

Kid is wrong.

Help bring kid to understanding that the validity of their identity can’t rest on rubbish. Nobody is born in the wrong body. Nobody can change sex.

That doesn’t mean they can’t feel how they feel.

EwwSprouts · 24/04/2022 19:07

Excellent. This should be on the agenda of the health secretary/ I too think the Rotherham analogy fits.

ResisterRex · 25/04/2022 09:58

There is a letter from two GPs in Scotland on Javid's decision:

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 25/04/2022 10:16

Have they got an inside track they should not have alluded to? Or are they hoping for a delay?

I don't know about the likely date for the review publication.

If Stonewall is a stakeholder (as they almost certainly are) then they will be notified as to any slippage in schedules and likely date.

ResisterRex · 25/04/2022 10:19

The Cass report was meant to be "summer". Not "later this year". That's what I thought anyway - could be wrong.

MaudeYoung · 27/04/2022 16:30

Stephanie Davies-Arai will be talking about all this with Helen Staniland and the others in The Mess We're In at 5 pm today

ResisterRex · 30/04/2022 06:55

Bumping as there's a longish article in the Mail today with what looks like a new quote from Javid.

The article goes over the global developments and talks about Leo and Keira, and the changes in Sweden:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10768707/When-Britain-wake-danger-giving-puberty-blockers-children.html

"This month Health Secretary Sajid Javid launched a review into the use of puberty blockers in this country. He believes youngsters are wrongly being given them by the NHS and hopes it will lead to a new, safer way of helping those who question their gender identity.
‘Mental health, bullying and previous sexual assault are just some of the issues that could be causing problems for the child,’ he said.
‘This approach where people just accept what a child says, almost automatically, and then start talking about puberty blockers, that’s not in the child’s interests at all.’"

WarriorNewAgain · 30/04/2022 08:23

I'm not sure it's just about scoring election points, though I'm sure some of it is; at the end of the day the government, who ever they are, are accountable for the nhs and also these children and processes.

If whoever is on power is ignoring the overwhelming evidence being presented on a daily basis that this is becoming the biggest worldwide medical scandal of our times, they themselves could be held accountable for this shit.

Litigation is beginning to mount.

I've seen a number of detransed males on twitter recently, who have been on hormones for a long time, now describing all the issues that Javid describes. One described their failing health and no one being able to help till he began trying some testosterone and found this was what was causing his illnesses. Another is in the U.K. in his 30s, and is failing to get testosterone treatment to help his detransition. He's lawyering up.

All describe bullying, late autism diagnosis, difficulties at school or home when they were children and teens.

WarriorNewAgain · 30/04/2022 08:25

We said a few years ago it would be the tidal wave of detransitioners who would help to turn the tide medically.

It's so sad that this is the case.

Sport reveals the idiocy to the masses but doesn't actually help to define the bigger safeguarding issues.

WarriorNewAgain · 30/04/2022 08:28

Guy in the U.K.:

tullipr.substack.com/p/the-gender-dysphoria-trap

Looks at the nhs descriptions of GD and then defines All the points made by javid.

Another, I think in the US:

WarriorNewAgain · 30/04/2022 08:29

But all this is old hat now.

We've known for a long time.

The backlash is coming.

WarriorNewAgain · 30/04/2022 08:31

The key thing is that it's becoming clear that for younger trans identifying individuals, cross sex hormones from and early age really wreck your health, for both sexes.

For a long time it's been the older males who've transitioned to females who've stolen the limelight.

The nhs is going to be picking up the pieces for decades.

Hoardasurass · 30/04/2022 08:45

Thanks for the link @ResisterRex that's a powerful article and helps to explain exactly why we have been fighting for this dangerous bs to be banned.
The NHS has forgotten 1st do no harm and that the treatment should never be worse than the condition

ResisterRex · 30/04/2022 09:02

It's so sad. I just feel so sorry for the children who underwent these treatments (? seems like the wrong word) as it does appear nothing was being tracked, that a vast structure to support the terrible thing was built and is still here (the dreadful schools resources masquerading as RSE for example), and now what is there? A trail avoidable damage. It's heartbreaking.

KittenKong · 30/04/2022 10:28

Those cheering it all in - they don’t seem to feel and sorrow or guilt in all this. It’s mostly those who have been arguing against it that have been left to kick up the pieces.

colouringindoors · 30/04/2022 10:37

thanks @ResisterRex for that article. It's excellent and appalling. And also recognises the impact internationally that the so brave Keira Bell has had, and is having on policy. Please God this is the beginning of the end.

Signalbox · 30/04/2022 12:07

Most parents will surely be thinking long and hard about allowing their child to go on PBs after reading stories like this. Perhaps the demand for GIDs referrals will plummet this year. The combination of stories like this, the Cass Review and Keira Bell must have some impact soon.

AppleandRhubarbTart · 01/05/2022 16:09

tabbycatstripy · 24/04/2022 12:28

‘It's not sufficient to have an enquiry into GIDS without understanding other major actors and contributors to this mess.’

I’d support a much broader ‘how did we get here?’ inquiry as well.

Same here.
