The twitter account for the theatre group behind the Family Sex Show (@ThisEgg_) has revealed that there are performances planned of the Family Sex Show despite the cancellation of the national tour and they are looking for more venues to take them on.
It seems that the Bath performance(s) is/are running.

Is this a common way for 20-somethings to introduce themselves these days?

There's a thread where someone describes this happening in a therapy group of sorts and one of the members thinks he's being mocked and doesn't understand why he's being told what he can already see.

theDudesmummy · 24/04/2022 10:38

Yeah, I bet...so they can go off afterwards and discuss animal masturbation and making drawings of genitalia with "an adult they trust". What could possibly go wrong?

Well it’s ripe for parody. All those people who introduce themselves in the video are a parody of themselves, really.

One of the performers is visually impaired so I wondered if they had encouraged everyone to use this kind of description for any visually impaired members of the audience?

…A man who’s taught biology for 20 years says that he was almost in tears – this show, he reckons, needs to be seen by thousands of children.

Bizarre for an adult to get so emotional over a stage show. I can only imagine they were tears of joy at the thought of thousands of children being groomed. Funny this biology teacher wasn't named, I wonder why?

BettyFilous · 24/04/2022 10:59

Thanks for sharing the YouTube video. “Groomers’ almanac, the Guardian” raised a laugh.

@FannyCann thanks for posting that video, very good!

If they’ve already run test performances why so coy about the content? They should have been able to summarise what they covered in the test run on their parental guidance page. 🤔

Agreed - this makes no sense and doesn't correspond with what they'd written on their website, nor did they respond to the queries with a full breakdown of what was in the finished show and why they had decided this content was within safeguarding practices, as most people with nothing to hide would be able to do.

And: “Hello, I have long brown hair which is half up and half down. And I am wearing big hooped earrings but I don’t have pierced ears.”

Is this a common way for 20-somethings to introduce themselves these days? Is this what they’ve gained from a university education?

I think that this is to be inclusive to blind people in the audience. Not sure, but it would fit.

nepeta · 24/04/2022 16:04

On the other hand, the colour of someone's hair is probably not relevant for those blind people who have been blind from birth.

Yummymummy2020 · 24/04/2022 16:09

@nepeta very good point!!!!

For family reasons, I've grown up with people who are blind or vision impaired.

I've a fair amount of experience as an informal audio describer for day to day stuff and days out. One of the things it can be very difficult to grasp is how many of our descriptions rely upon a shared understanding. E.g., I was in tea-room by a harbour. I described the tea-room as crowded, with nineteenth century style dark furniture and the covers were chintzy. One of the group was one of the comparatively few people who had been blind from birth (rather than partial sight or lost later in life after experience of sight). I found myself discussing the social sense of dark Victorian furniture, the middle class semiotics of that style of chintz, and the overall effect of making the space feel hemmed in. I then ended up describing the huddled together family groups of the harbour seals on a couple of pontoons.

It's fascinating to realise how much your own interpretations, social knowledge, and biases come through when you are attempting to describe something for someone else.

It's one of the on-going issues around providing an alt text for images to make them accessible to people who use screen-readers or are partially sighted. A lot of people make them literal which might miss out a mass of relevant information. However, beyond a certain point, some people are apprehensive about editorialising an interpretation.

I’m sure that is the reason they think they’re doing it. But I suspect it might also have to do with a desire to talk about themselves, without having much of interest to say.

That’s really interesting. I wonder if this is the kind of job that AI could eventually (or already? It seems a bit like the inverse of what DALL-E does) do better than humans, as it wouldn’t be constrained by that fear.

Probably the excitement of his first time in a room with a real naked woman.

Yeah. Basically kids, when looking for an 'adult to trust', it is never one who wants to talk about this sort of thing with you. Their interest in you is limited to meeting their own needs.

We've moved on from 'stranger danger'. It's now a case of teaching kids to recognise people who have major challenges with boundaries, appropriacy and responsibility.

Iliveinacarboardbox · 02/05/2022 09:04

Apparently they performed the show to an audience in Bath a few days ago.

FannyCann · 02/05/2022 10:48

And children were present.
Children who will then go and repeat the new vocabulary they have learnt to their friends at school.

theDudesmummy · 02/05/2022 11:17

Anyone know the ages of the children who were there? It was said a few days ago they would be only 18+? And can anyone confirm the comment that there were mainly single men there? (Quelle surprise if that is true, we know exactly what/who this show is for).

Mandodari · 02/05/2022 11:22

When adults put their needs above what is best for children.

FannyCann · 02/05/2022 11:39

Apparently at least a 13 year old and some younger.

There are multiple reports that there were younger children in attendance, so that seems credible, but as to the comment about mainly single men under the BNT video, I personally would not believe a single word any BNT commentator posts, not least one with a string of numbers in their username. The word "bot" springs to mind

BNT is full of conspiracy theories, racism, anti-vax propaganda, ablism, homophobia, and frankly is little more than a hub for the far right to dog-whistle and whip up social media mobs.

Take anything you see on there with a mountain of salt.

How dare people have a place to discuss the issues of the day without consulting you first. Personally, I am outraged on your behalf!

They can discuss whatever they like (within the law). But I'd suggest if your comment sections are full of ablist or racist slurs you need to take a closer look at your target audience, and personally I don't believe a word that comes off that god-awful site.

theDudesmummy · 02/05/2022 12:43

I don't know that site or its agenda, but I was certainly sceptical about a claim that it was "mainly" single men there, which semed unlikely (although not impossible I guess). I would be very interested in a factual/impartial report about the ages of the children and the actual content of the show that was staged.
