Not sure if this has already been covered.

It moves from medicalisation to supporting gender dysphoric young people through psychotherapy, allowing them to explore 'why' they feel this way.

I would like to see us move to this model.

Good. Thank you for posting.

Pudmyboy · 13/04/2022 21:43

Great stuff, we can but hope the message spreads and this approach becomes the standard

Moodlesofnoodles · 13/04/2022 21:44

It's great news. But in the UK, no-one will pay for the necessary psychotherapy, surely?

ResisterRex · 13/04/2022 21:50

Is this development linked to this documentary?

Just coming to post, this is huge and fantastic.,

DysonSphere · 13/04/2022 22:00

Thanks for that link @ResisterRex barely a minute in and it's sobering to say the least.

I think that got the ball rolling, along with what's been going on here, Kiera Bell etc

It's true that CAHMS is not well funded and does not seem to have the capacity to meet the current need.

But that is a funding choice that can be changed.

Is this new? I knew they were limiting it.

WarriorN · 13/04/2022 22:01

Thanks for that link *@ResisterRex* barely a minute in and it's sobering to say the least.

There's now 4 episodes I think.

WarriorN · 13/04/2022 22:01

I think a main hospital was limiting it? And this is now official policy? Sorry if I've got that wrong

tabbycatstripy · 13/04/2022 22:04

Brilliant if so.

WarriorN · 13/04/2022 22:09

Seems to say so in first para, they've issued official health board guidance after a leading pead hospital changed tack.

DontLikeCrumpets · 13/04/2022 22:36

@Moodlesofnoodles

I'm all for psychotherapy as long as the therapist isn't a gender ideologue. The question is how to determine the therapist's bias?

LizzieSiddal · 13/04/2022 22:41

Huge news, I hope we follow very shortly.

littlbrowndog · 13/04/2022 22:43

This terrible story. Linked to the above

My heart my heart for these children

nepeta · 13/04/2022 22:49

They are going to follow the Dutch model, they say, in how to address gender dysphoria in those under eighteen.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 13/04/2022 22:51

That's painful reading littlbrowndog
Unforgivable what's happening to our daughters,

KittenKong · 13/04/2022 22:55

I assume this is because they were further down the line - starting doing this on mass scale earlier than the U.K.? So how long before we catch up (I’m ignoring the US/Canada because I think they are too far gone)

I don't think they were further down the line, but I think they were able to use what has happened in the UK and the US etc. as guidance.
Datun · 13/04/2022 23:43

Given there's no such thing as being born in the wrong body, then the obvious thing to do is to address why children get gender dysphoria.

Why? What causes it?

TRAs don't want it to follow that path. They want it to be something innate that is just 'there'.

Given there's fuck all evidence for that, and overwhelming evidence for it being several other things, then, absolutely, psychotherapy should be the only real treatment.

Saltyquiche · 13/04/2022 23:46

Sounds sensible

Slothtoes · 14/04/2022 00:45

That’s brilliant, what a relief for kids in distress, and I agree it’s huge.

Presumably they will now be doing research in Sweden comparing outcomes from the old invasive medicalised approach against the new talking therapy approach too - which will be very useful evidence globally.

ResisterRex · 14/04/2022 06:21

Dyson I used some of it for my response to the conversion therapy consultation. Osteoporosis is a big issue in it.

Warrior I remember now. I think I started watching one actually, I will have to try to find it and watch again.

We need Panorama or the equivalent here.

There is some useful information on this thread which I'm going to read today Smile

NecessaryScene · 14/04/2022 06:51

Here are all four SVT documentaries

The Trans Children

We need Panorama or the equivalent here.

Closest we've had is multiple reports by Hannah Barnes and Deborah Cohen for Newsnight:
