Owen Jones is truly despicable. What an awful comparison… he clearly has no shame

a debate on abortion is long overdue in this country

I am beyond irritated with the wilful conflation of the UK and USA—especially when the latter doesn't have a consistent policy.

WinterTrees · 09/04/2022 11:08

@EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn

I don't think he's losing much sleep over what an irrelevant tennis player with less than half his followers is saying

Martina is a lesbian icon.

Exactly this.

Martina Navratilova is not just a lesbian icon, but someone who has been hugely impacted by homophobia, forcibly outed at a time when being a lesbian carried real stigma, and used her platform to campaign for equality. When she came out in 1981 she was the first sportswoman to announce her sexuality, and it cost her millions in lost sponsorship opportunities.

If Little OJ sees her as an irrelevant tennis player, that's either a mark of his supreme ignorance or further evidence of his misogyny and lesbophobia. If it's the first, I'm embarrassed for him. If it's the second I'm disgusted.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/04/2022 11:49

I very much doubt that all OJs 'followers' are actually supporters of his.

Igneococcus · 09/04/2022 11:53

I wonder how many people outside the UK have even heard of Owen Jones, I bet none in my family has ever heard of him (and that includes an active leftish politician) whereas everyone knows Martina Navratilova.

zanahoria · 09/04/2022 12:18

Martina is also the greatest sportswoman of the 20th Century

zanahoria · 09/04/2022 12:23

Also she is someone who OJ is very scared of

He normally answers back

Total silence

I’m not in the UK. This thread is the first time I’ve heard of him (hence my question above).

Martina Navratilova, on the other hand, world famous.

He's been asked. He said the question was homophobic.

How is the question homophobic? I take it he didn’t answer it, then?

Cailleach1 · 09/04/2022 13:03

@NurseBernard

Someone needs to ask Owen Jones if he would enter into a relationship, and / or have sex with a man with a vagina and breasts.

My guess is his answer would be a hard no.

So he’s as transphobic as the next person. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I highly doubt you would receive an honest answer. When the body of a woman is required to produce offspring, then you'll see that these chappies know very well what a woman is. They won't arrive at one by accident, or assume everyone simply with nail varnish, and she/her pronouns is the ticket then.

Nah, the boyos will ditch the pretence for as long as the hiring transaction takes, and they are delivered of the goods. Then they'll pretend they are be all confused again.

Cailleach1 · 09/04/2022 13:09

And, Martina Navratilova is known the world over. Some niche, self righteous opinion writer doesn't have the same status at all. MN has come out when it was not in her self interest and has lost revenue because of it. Not just a different type of character. Martina has character.

letsallchant · 09/04/2022 13:19

@Thetailfeather

Why do we have to agree with other people on every issue? I can agree with someone on one issue and disagree on another one. Surely the ability to decide on an issue by issue basis is the very basic building block of having an opinion.

I agree with LOJ on some things and on others think his take is a pile of wank. On balance, I think he's a tube but that doesn't preclude me agreeing on some issues.

And who gets to decide the range of opinions I'm allowed to have? Hint: I'll fucking die on the hill of it not being a no-name wank stain who writes shit for a living.

This purity concept is harming public discourse and removes the grey areas where consensus is found.

Great post.

I can't find the quote, but he thought it was homophobic to suggest that a gay man should consider a sexual relationship with someone with a female body. This was after he called lesbians transphobic for refusing to have sex with 'transwomen' with penises.

He's a hypocrite.

I think it all started with this article in 2015.

Yes it was that article and the Twitter conversation around it (upthread).

@MiladyBerserko

Re. Caroline Farrow, you would almost think Catholics were not allowed.

Wasn't there a protection in the Equality Act? Do Catholics, or other 'non progressive' religions get to be 'included' too. Or do they get the women treatment?

Progressive religions? Do you mean like the Cof E (and assorted friends) where beacons such as the former archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams sent a letter to the PM about the sacredness of 'being trans'.

Interesting how the letter compares 'being trans' to a conversion to Christianity. "To be trans is to enter a sacred journey of being whole". Well, they are right on one level. It is a personal belief. Or was before laws were changed and a whole sex class are screwed over to facilitate this 'sacred journey' of the believers.

Just put https before the following link (no gap between that and the : ).

As suspected. One rule for him. One rule for women.
