Emily Bridges’ mum not happy at all. But I think it’s the wrong tone and not helping. This is her kid’s career and I understand her being passionate, but it seems very entitled when nearly everyone is in agreement that this is the right decision.

OvaHere · 08/04/2022 13:23

It's not really her kids career though is it? Bridges didn't make the cut to be coached for male Olympic stardom just before the transition decision was taken.

Lots of men and women are faced with coming as far as they can in sport every day. I have no doubt it feels devastating to have come very close to making it but not being quite the pinnacle to receive investment.

If goes any further than it has it will not be Bridges' career it will be a career that was stolen from a woman/women.

brainbowbroad · 08/04/2022 13:24

This is brilliant news, hopefully we'll be able to push all the male cheats out of women's sport forever.

Quadzilla · 08/04/2022 13:34

Whilst this is excellent news, it doesn’t effect recreational cycling. This weekend women will be turning up for, what they think from the promotional material, a British Cycling women only bike ride led by female instructors.
In fact, the female ride leader may be male and any of the participants may be male.
Which begs the question, if transwomen are male in competitive cycling, why are they treated as female in non-competitive cycling?

Is there anything here that tells you it’s not just for women?

Pluvia · 08/04/2022 13:37

Good news. And now cycling's had the guts to do this, other sporting bodies will have to do so too or look like they don't care about women's sport.

We're turning this tanker around. Well done to everyone who's spoken up on this. I hope it gives more power to women such as Tonia Atoniazzi MP, who is a rugby player and who has spoken out about this and been on the receiving end of much unpleasantness as a result.

tabbycatstripy · 08/04/2022 13:38

‘It goes any further than it has it will not be Bridges' career it will be a career that was stolen from a woman/women.’

Yes. She’s wrong.

Femalewoman · 08/04/2022 13:41

GOOD, it's the correct decision.

As some have said 'women's sport is fragile at present' (men are taking over)

Why should a top male athlete then become a trans woman compete. So lowered testosterone for a short period - so what - the BIOLOGICAL advantages of being a MAN have occurred in the body - he is competing against biological WOMEN who cannot compete against a man. Unfair. Wrong. The madness must stop.

Gender DOES NOT TRUMP BIOLOGICAL SEX.

lamujerenfadada · 08/04/2022 13:42

EB’s mum is threatening legal action. I hope this happens because as we’ve seen elsewhere, we need case law to sort this shit out once and for all.

Well said @OvaHere

Helleofabore · 08/04/2022 13:45

I would love to have this taken to court. I would love to have cycling GB defend their original decision and have to list exactly who they listened to and what advice they had. I would love to see if their coercive 'no person shall disagree publicly' statements will also stand up in court.

Hey, EB's mum! BRING IT ON!

And someone else will be finding the crowd funder for a change. Hope she's got lots of friends who like gardening.

NecessaryScene · 08/04/2022 13:46

I'm wondering if the rumoured women's cyclists boycott of the Derby event was real.

Sharron Davies referred to it in , and I imagine she would be in a position to know better than us.

The young athletes find it very difficult because they're not old enough, they're worried about their careers, they're being advised by their governing bodies to keep their heads down.

I was very proud of the cyclist girls. You know, they were going to boycott, and and that is why the UCI decided to step in and tell British Cycling that this was not acceptable - that her license hadn't actually changed from registered as a male to being registered as a woman and therefore, you know, that that incident was stopped.

Femalewoman · 08/04/2022 13:48

Seeing trans gender woman Lia Thomas on the podium after winning the women's swimming summed it up. The biological man towered over the biological women and why the heck is a biological male with all the advantages of being a man being allowed to compete against biological females. Just because someone decides they no longer want to be their biological sex and assumes a female identity shouldn't give them access to female sports competitions/changing rooms/prisons and safe spaces.

brainbowbroad · 08/04/2022 13:49

Young women and girls have been abandoning sport in droves because they don't think it's fair to compete against males, hopefully this will turn that situation around.

FannyCann · 08/04/2022 13:52

Extremely heartening comments, the game's up, the general public know and they're not having it.

BREAKING NEWS: British Cycling BAN trans cyclists from racing

As an aside, apologies if I've missed it, but which section do the non-binary community want to race in? Especially if fluid?

This makes me happy. Boris yesterday, this today. Are people finally seeing the absurd ridiculousness and unfairness of it all?!

Great news just keeps on coming.

Bring it in on, Ms Sullivan. We will be waiting, gardening forks to hand!

The tide has turned and with Boris on the warpath we'll soon have our safe spaces back.

I know, brilliant! Case law that we don’t have to pay for. So kind of you EB’s mum!

WeeBisom · 08/04/2022 14:17

Haha, on the topic of legal action I saw some gender supporters on Twitter moan and complain that gender critical feminists were cheating by er … bringing court cases that then cemented their transphobia in law. Because that’s how court cases work…

tabbycatstripy · 08/04/2022 14:18

Karen Adams MSP says we’ll look back on statements like the British Cycling statement with ‘shame and embarrassment’.

For making sport fair? I think not.

2Rebecca · 08/04/2022 14:24

Why is Emily a 21 year old adult not speaking? Why is Emily standing behind mummy?

WTF475878237NC · 08/04/2022 14:27

Pleased to see this. Also on guard now for trans-female. The Guardian article referring to women as cis wound me up again.

MrsAvocet · 08/04/2022 14:30

Quadzilla I have literally just written to BC imploring that the effects on the recreational programme are not overlooked.
I got back into cycling after a very long hiatus via Breeze some years ago, and whilst I am no longer involved I still feel very grateful to the women who gave me confidence to get back on 2 wheels. The thought of other women bring deprived of that opportunity makes me pretty angry.

littlbrowndog · 08/04/2022 14:31

That’s Scotland for you 🤦‍♀️

No doubt. BC are transphobic bigots to Adams
