Guardian gunning for JKR again

www.theguardian.com/film/2022/apr/08/fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-cancel-them-how-the-wizarding-world-lost-its-magic

The phone line between Stonewall & the guardian must be red hot at the moment. After yesterdays patronising “dining across the divide”
‘And so gentle reader I met a TW and they were nice and I learned the error of my ways and was so grateful to be educated. Thank you Guardian, give TW all the things’ piece yesterday plus Zoe Williams “be kind you bigots I’ve never needed a single sex space myself” article, today we have “jkr has upset the kids and now no one cares about Harry Potter anymore”

Can’t wait to see what they come up with tomorrow!

They really are spiteful, aren't they?

If you read Andrew Billen's piece in the Times today (which is far from perfect), it's clear that the controversy hasn't hit JKR's sales at all. Her books are still selling extremely well and brought in £12.7m last year.

The Times's film reviewer gives the new Fantastic Beasts film an excellent review and says it's much better than the earlier two.

So this piece is born out of pure nastiness - the same nastiness that saw them drop JKR from their birthdays list. She's worth a million of them.

Chrysanthemum5 · 08/04/2022 09:17

@RoyalCorgi spiteful is exactly the right word. That writer is clearly jealous of JKR's skill with words

Yep.

I don't actually like HP or her other books, but I recently bought them all.

Presumably other women are buying them regardless of whether they enjoy them. I'd happily buy her books as and when they're released.

TheGreatATuin · 08/04/2022 09:42

I read that a little earlier and, yup, exactly my thoughts. Spiteful. They seem very eager for the franchise to fail so they can point the finger at JKR and say 'I told you so'.
Personally, DS and I watched Fantastic Beasts last night, I'll be paying for and streaming Grindelwald tonight, all so we're refreshed and caught up ready to see the new one in the cinema.

Beamur · 08/04/2022 09:45

It's a sour, mean spirited article. I very much doubt though it will have any impact on anyone choosing to go and see the film..
The whole attitude of saying that Harry Potter belongs to the fans not 'her' makes my eyes roll very hard though. So feeble and petty.

WearyLady · 08/04/2022 09:46

A spiteful article but even if what the author says about the wizarding francihises were true, I don't think we need worry about JKR. She's not a one trick pony and will always find success if she chooses to seek it. Indeed. even if she retired from writing tomorrow she wouldn't exactly be on the poverty line. Hats off to JKR. She can well afford to ignore this spiteful nonsense.

NitroNine · 08/04/2022 09:47

It really is just “spite spite spite, jealousy spite spite, unsubstantiated [spiteful] claims, jealousy spite spite”.

Good thing humans can live without their spleens because journalist responsible for this presumably no longer has one due to over-venting.

TheGreatATuin · 08/04/2022 09:57

The thing about the fans also implies that her fans are deserting her. They seem to think that because they know a few adults tantruming about the author of wizarding franchise, everyone else is too, but Harry Potter is still everywhere. Anyone with eyes can tell that it still has a huge fan following.

MaChienEstUnDick · 08/04/2022 09:57

The longer this goes on, the more it becomes a wider metaphor for wims in the world. They HATE JKR because she has her own money and power, self-earned, and that means they cannot bring her down. She is independent. She is free.

DomesticatedZombie · 08/04/2022 10:01

It would be amusing if JK bought the Guardian.

I don't mean like bought a copy. I mean, bought the company.

AryaStarkWolf · 08/04/2022 10:01

I really hope that she's vindicated in the end and these people have to admit that they behaved horribly towards her. She's been so brave standing up like she has

I love this. Absolutely. She is beyond their reach.

That is really interesting that I read that article first and thought ‘spiteful’ sums it up and came back to find everyone says exactly the same word.
I wonder if Ryan will be directed to here to rub his hands in delight stirring the witches up. If so, my university children are into Harry Potter and her stance on women’s rights is in line with their own (and they even speak about it in less hushed tones with their friends now). In order to persuade your readers (even young ones) that your argument is correct Ryan, you need to try harder. Or perhaps don’t write such spiteful pieces. It’s not good journalism. It just sounds petty.

lockhillie · 08/04/2022 10:06

It's the same with all the ($) billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, they've earnt their money through hard work and they should be respected.

Unfortunately, many of these people will never own up to their behaviour, they will slither off into the shadows and pretend it never happened.

I read that article this morning and wanted to throw up a bit, talk about a bunch of vindictive crap! Dripping with jealousy and loathing, it read like a bad article in a school paper!

Whoever said the Guardian is really the muggle version of The Quibbler was right Grin.

AryaStarkWolf · 08/04/2022 10:10

@Roseglen84 Yes you're probably right. I honestly still can't even believe this thing is still steaming along with all the truly batshit crazy stuff properly in the public eye now, Lia Thomas, Politicians not being able to tell you what a women is etc etc

IvyTwines · 08/04/2022 10:23

Sarah Ditum's just commented, "So according to the Guardian here: "wife-beating" and choking women in public are "small beer" compared to JK Rowling writing accurately about the law, biology and her own victimisation....It's often very obvious in these pieces that women speaking is more egregious than male violence, but nice for someone to say it directly. And for the record, despite this piece's thesis: the Potter franchise is still making mad bank. Twitter is not the world"

Manicsfan · 08/04/2022 10:27

I sat up too late last night reading the thread about M Webberley's fitness to practice medicine hearing in absolute shock and horror. Wasn't part of the hearing yesterday? Now that's news. But they are publishing articles about JK? Fuck sake. Piss poor journalism.

Lea1437 · 08/04/2022 10:29

There's a lot of it about at the minute Hmm

They wish - I'm on my way to see it this afternoon. I'm sure it will be superb.
Fucking Guardian wankers.

Queenoftheashes · 08/04/2022 10:29

Funny, they usually have comments on for articles about movies. Literally this guy knows if he had them on he’d get 600 people pointing out that JKR continues to be successful, popular, books selling etc etc. What a berk.

Very nice idea.

Wonder if she would consider buying the rights to Father Ted - The Musical, too.

A Rowling/Linehan collaboration would be amazing and undoubtedly a massive hit.
