BorisJohnson proves once and for all that he's just been pretending to be a bumbling idiot all along.

Why is the interviewer using the phrase conversion therapy FFS?!

Come on Labour catch up now please?!

I don't think that counts as "nailing it" - obviously he said some very sensible things about wider trans-related issues and his point about Gillick Competence is valid but "nailing it" would require him to specifically state that some children who float the idea of being trans are not trans, their feelings of dysphoria and alienation are due to complex issues like grappling with their own homosexuality in a heteronormative and still sometimes homophobic culture; or due to some of the possible ways that autism can affect some people's self-perception; or due to a rejection of being aggressively sexualised when their body reaches puberty - and that any legislation which "bans conversion therapy" needs to be incredibly carefully worded to ensure that those children - who would eventually detransition if they went onto a transition pathway or would be one of those who tragically find that life is no less unbearable once transitioned - are given the right support, and the help they need to find out the real root of their issues and learn to live their lives as their true selves in freedom. The existing proposals would have made it incredibly difficult for parents and professionals to help those children. I am disappointed that Boris blustered about sports and women-only spaces (despote those being valod points) rather than specifically answering this issue more fully.

He's not going to say all that in a brief interview is he?! My point is that I would very much prefer to be agreeing with the Labour leader on this and not our current PM.

I just think that this is just another red bus.

… and people will fall for it.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:04

Fall for what? I don't care if he doesn't believe it or that he doesn't give a shit about women and children. He said it Starmer didn't. It needed saying.
He's a prick and i will never call him Boris like he's a mate. But he is on the right side on this and Starmer has hand led to him.

Mumoblue · 07/04/2022 07:05

Boris is just saying whatever he thinks will get him votes- he’s not going to do anything. And I despair that it actually works on people.
I don’t have an easy answer, but the Tories aren’t it. As a woman on the breadline, I’m more concerned about eating and heating right now.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:08

He doesn't have to do anything. This is a free header for him. All he has to do is Not do stuff - like introduce self-ID. Costs nothing.
If Labour get back in they can try to sort out the economy. They can reduce NI. They can cap heating costs. All that. But if they carry on with the bullshit, they won't get back in. Even against this shower of criminal incompetents.

BuanoKubiamVej · 07/04/2022 07:09

@SpringHasSprungYay He's not going to say all that in a brief interview is he?!

Not all of it maybe, but he spent the vast majority of his speaking time talking about issues that have nothing to do with conversion therapy and had no place in that interview. He looked like he was trying to change the subject rather than answering the question and he certainly could have put across some of "all that" if he had stuck to the point.

Tonsiltrouble · 07/04/2022 07:09

I think this is Carrie talking. And I agree that it’s very disconcerting that Boris is the only person who publicly aligns with my views on this. The Tories are not exactly a friend to women or minorities and I worry this is just coming from a position of being generally bigoted. But he is right about this.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:11

Carrie Johnson is full on TWAW. This isn't her. This is Central Office telling him this is the only way we can win. And they are right.

GeneLovesJezebel · 07/04/2022 07:12

For me this isn’t about Boris or the Conservatives, it’s about a person in a position of power in this country standing up and saying what needed to be said.
Hopefully now this will snowball, and the nonsense that has been dictated upon us will stop.

Imabouttoexplode · 07/04/2022 07:13

I just can't listen to him. My loathing for him knows no bounds and I can't bear all the, 'we were first to do this and that and the other' nonsense. That said, he's only saying what is factual, in that it is physically impossible to change sex. Any right minded person knows this.

TheBigDilemma · 07/04/2022 07:13

@bellinisurge

Exactly, he pushes a vulnerable button with the population, gets the millions of votes, doesn’t deliver, but who cares, he said that so who cares if he is lying?

Sigh… off to enjoy the 350 millions the NHS gets a day, while I savour the financial bonanza Brexit has brought to my home. (Jesus, I can not even find a lettuce in the supermarket or keep my child warm, but who cares we are free!!!Hmm)

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:15

People going on about "he's only saying it for votes" he doesn't believe it. Don't give a shit. Labour aren't saying it. Labour could say it AND words about finding money for third spaces etc. But they don't because TRAs aren't interested in third spaces. Only in the validation that comes with the fantasy that TWAW.

Transwomen are Transwomen. They are not women.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:17

What's to deliver? He literally doesn't have to do anything or assign any money. Just to call a halt to self ID and de facto self ID.
Cheap and easy winner.

Mumoblue · 07/04/2022 07:19

Yeah he said it. But look at how things have changed in the last twelve years. The Tories are not champions of women’s rights. This is just “it’d be worse under Labour” 2.0.

The tories have spent the last twelve years shitting the bed, so forgive me for not jumping for joy when around election time Boris says he’s thinking about changing a pillowcase, when we all know he isn’t bothered in the slightest.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:20

Labour has been played. Seen this all before in different formats. Voted Labour since 1987 apart from Corbyn (when I spoiled my ballot)

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:23

@Mumoblue , I don't care that he doesn't mean it. He literally doesn't have to do anything. Labour, if they want to get into government and fix the economic catastrophe, have to play catch up.
Labour need EVERY woman to back them at the ballot box to do enough to turn back the Tories. That's how our electoral system works. It needs to be a massive voter groundswell for Labour. And they won't do it. Because of this stupidity.

Mumoblue · 07/04/2022 07:28

@bellinisurge

I know there’s no easy answer politically for women right now. Personally I’m just scared about being able to eat. I’m not in a position to care more about this than I do about the financial crisis, which is obviously not a fun place to be in.
I’m just trying to remind people that voting Tory isn’t automatically putting women first, when so many of us are suffering because of their incompetence and greed.

ScreamingMeMe · 07/04/2022 07:32

Labour are no champions of women's rights either.

They must know by now that this issue will lose them votes -they have been told pften enough by now. But still they plough on. They are zealots. I don't want to be governed by zealots who don't care about the opinions of their potential voters.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 07:33

I get it @Mumoblue . It's shocking. But we can roll back economic disaster with a Labour government quite quickly. We can't roll back self-ID once it's in. Look at Ireland. They are stuck with it and it's a nightmare to undo.

ScreamingMeMe · 07/04/2022 07:39

To put it bluntly, Labour called us bigots and basically told us to fuck off. So many of us did. They are still calling us bigots and telling us to fuck off.

You want to get angry with someone, get angry with them.

rogdmum · 07/04/2022 07:41

I don’t think he cares about the issue at all either and I think he was hoping it would all bubble around him without his needing to get involved. However, he knows a vote winner when he sees one and he does have enough people around him who do care about the issue very very much. Hopefully he will now start to properly pay attention to them and become more fluent when speaking (I thought he bumbled his way through it yesterday and made it clear it wasn’t something he’d wanted to end up needing to address). That’s enough for me.

Can we just call it "therapy" please?

He's not 'nailing it'. He has seen the Labour shitshow on this issue and is swooping in to exploit it.

And who can blame him really. Its like taking candy from a baby!

I am a lifelong Labour voter too & dismayed by their stance on this.

I know there are other pressing issues. But this is very important to both women & children. The very people most affected by the economic downturn.

I will never vote Tory. But Boris is right about this point. Whatever his motivations.
