www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/04/05/nhs-equality-chief-leads-mutiny-against-transphobic-watchdog/ for the full piece. some key elements below. I think the two journalists have done a really good job - covered all the bases.

"....Tara Hewitt, the group head of equality, diversity and inclusion at Northern Care Alliance NHS Group, described the guidance as “transphobic” and said that NHS bosses should put it in the “bin”.

Her calls for NHS leaders to be told to “ignore” the legal opinion of the UK’s human rights body was backed by Kathryn Thomson, the chief executive of Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust, and Aaron Cummins, the chief executive at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust....

"Legal experts warned on Tuesday that NHS trusts not following the watchdog's advice on the law “could well come unstuck”.

Amanda Jones, a barrister specialising in gender law at Great James Street chambers, added that it was “unwise publicly to publish your refusal to engage with the EHRC’s guidance”.

....After its long-awaited clarification was published, the Trans NHS Staff Network put out a message on social media urging “all NHS Equality Teams to ignore this transphobic and hostile guidance from EHRC that is likely to be found unlawful at judicial review and continue to write and follow trans inclusive policies and guidance”...

...All NHS trusts have a duty to comply with the Equality Act. The EHRC's guidance, published on Monday, stated that service providers can “limit access to their service for trans people” if it “is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim”. This “could be for reasons of privacy, decency, to prevent trauma or to ensure health and safety”.

Ms Jones added that “if you don’t follow the guidance and you come before a court, the court is going to want some serious explanation of why you’re not following it”, she said.

Estelle Carmichael, the deputy chief of people for Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust which employs Ms Hewitt, said: “As a responsible health care provider and employer, our approach is to focus on treating all of our colleagues and patients according to their individual needs.

“We will continue to advise our staff to follow the principles and responsibilities of the Equality Act 2010, as set out in our local equality, diversity and inclusion policies and procedures. The manager who made these comments is a well-known equality advocate and has expressed a personal opinion on this matter.”

Morecambe Bay declined to comment whilst Liverpool Women's NHS Trust did not respond when approached by this newspaper."

@StellaAndCrow

"Tara was on the Conservative Party candidate list in the last election and came under fire when a Sun report ‘revealed’ her sexual fetishes.

Hewitt reportedly described herself as an “advocate of the BDSM (bondage, discipline and sadomasochism) community”, and into “swinging” and “pet play”, which is dressing up as an animal for sex."

Jeez.

Well that's interesting. I was wondering why they were talking about trans colleagues, when I'd assumed it was about single sex wards. But as a previous poster said, it seems that what Tara Hewitt and co are really interested in is stopping women objecting to being examined by "trans colleagues".

Ugh. In that video Hewitt is completely upfront about transwomen who get turned on by wearing women's clothes. So confident are they, that they go on to say that nobody should be judging these men.

Now they're promoting allowing them to examine women in a women's hospital, and telling the NHS to ignore the equality law which allows women to object??

How the fuck have we got here.

Well, I can see how. There are men and women in that video listening to hewitt and none of them are saying hang on, you're talking about sexual fetish here, you've just said it!

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 06/04/2022 10:29

I suppose I shuld add that we work in conjunction with a male refuge, thet excludes all women, including transmen, based on the same logic.

Where do the transwomen and transmen go for support? I can hear the crie of anguish...

Well, the single transwoman we have had referred us was offered support and transport to the male refuge, where they were housed in a separate unit and offered both the men only and a mixed sex group support slot.

The handful of transmen we have had referreed to us were housed with is, also in separate units. The women in the refuge at that time chose to accept them in the female support groups, but they too were offered mixed sex support groups.

It was legal for us to refuse housing and support to transwomen back then. It remains legal now. No matter what some may insist.

I am fascinated by the psychology of those opposing the EHRC guidance.

It boils down to you can't say no to me.

I am fascinated by the psychology of those opposing the EHRC guidance.

It boils down to you can't say no to me.

… what if I am in your space? would you say it to my face?

what if all the legal courts
say I can be in your sports?

what if laws are made for me
stopping you from stopping me?

what if a panel all agreed
gave me the paper I said I need?

what if truth becomes a crime?
would you say it, given time?

what if I hit you in the head?
what if I claim you want me dead?

would you say it for a judge?
why oh why will you not budge?

Someone at The Telegraph or Times needs to pull that quote. Can we get it transcribed right now before it disappears?

happydappy2 · 06/04/2022 11:11

Tara and their partner seem to enjoy spending a lot of time at Alton Towers, that family friendly theme park where lots of children naturally spend their holidays. Tara boasts about the inclusive changing rooms & showers-what could possibly go wrong? We seperate adult males from women & children whilst showering for a very good reason.

Fucking hell. Do you have that quote?
happydappy2 · 06/04/2022 12:07

Datun Tara tweeted it on March 28th. Perhaps Alton Towers were sensible and have single sex changing for women, with a separate changing/showering area for trans women but I think they have form for dismissing womens concerns....

inclusive showers... made the day feel safe

Ahh yeah, nothing makes me, a woman, feel safer than nice inclusive showers.

Love that embarrassinghadrasaurus
Perfectly explained.

Kendodd · 06/04/2022 18:26

Tara takes a view that breast cancer is worse for MTF trans people than women because they feel the loss of their breast through mastectomy more, see the video.
What more than a new mother who now can't breastfeed her baby?

By default, is there anything that is not worse for The Sacred Caste than it is for women?

Is it possible that this is where the conflict of interest in Tara being a member of The Sacred Caste is evident to everybody except those who take advice or training from Tara?

SolasAnla · 06/04/2022 19:10

Well, I can see how. There are men and women in that video listening to hewitt and none of them are saying hang on, you're talking about sexual fetish here, you've just said it.

Because they have to think about the person described standing infront of them and what underwear the person is wearing and assess the probability of that person having an erection. Which is the audience engaging in sexual harassment of the person. That's against their training.

The probability of any of the staff wanting to pipeup up would be low as they are in the room to learn how to reject applying existing social behaviour. They have already agreed that the individual should be supported because they are different. The transgression of sexual activity in public is glossed over by including it in the meaning of who the individual is.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 06/04/2022 20:46

@Crcohetmonster

Nice bit of distancing from Estelle there.
Though, if Tara had advocated ignoring the EA about sexual orientation, the distancing wouldn't have been needed, as Tara's feet wouldn't have touched the ground on the way out.

*"Emily Wraw, the head of equality, diversity and inclusion at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, who reminded colleagues of Annex B and that 'single sex wards in the NHS are trans-inclusive'.

She tweeted: 'Quick reminder to NHS colleagues that the NHS England guidance on Delivering Same Sex accommodation (2019) remains in force, including Annexe B - single sex wards in the NHS are trans-inclusive.'"*
Does Emma not realise that the law trumps internal policies?

Alton Towers (Splash Landings) only has mixed sex changing with cubicles they call it a changing village. The showers are open and mixed sex too.
You are allowed to take photos but only of your immediate group, though how that is policed I have no idea.

I emailed Morecambe Bay asking who I should write to regarding Aaron Cummins support of Tara to be told PALS! Wrote back asking were they sure and awaiting response.

Clymene · 06/04/2022 22:33

Tara Hewitt uses a TERF blocker. Tara puts their job title in their Twitter bio so while views may be personal, as a public servant, I feel like Tara should be fair and objective in the way they treat patients. I don't feel like Tara will do that.

If you live in the region where Tara's trust operates, I would urge you to write to PALS, to the head of the NHS Trust and your MP.

Ugh. A male bodied individual who talks about men getting turned on by presenting as women and instructs the people he's talking to to always use female pronouns around such men?

And this person is urging the NHS to ignore laws that say women can object?

This is insane.

Datun · 07/04/2022 08:55

And tells them to call penises clitorises if that's what the person wants?

Fucking hell.

FrancescaContini · 07/04/2022 09:07

@Datun

And tells them to call penises clitorises if that's what the person wants?

Fucking hell.

So anybody can just rename any part of their body and demand that everyone around them does the same??

How does this work with regards to teaching young children in a very black and white way about the private parts of their body that nobody else should ever touch?

“Mum, he asked if he could touch my elbow, but I was confused because it wasn’t my elbow, it was my vagina, but he said it was a fun new game and it’s now called my elbow” - perhaps this sounds ludicrous but some abusers would most definitely use any confusion over terminology to their own repulsive advantage.
